Spoiler alert: This article is all about the second credits scene in “Eternals,” so by its nature is a spoiler. While it does not divulge plot details of “Eternals,” if you haven’t seen the movie yet, let us recommend checking out this review or this story on director Chloé Zhao instead.

The Black Knight always triumphs!

The surprise in the second credits scene isn’t that it teases the arrival of the Black Knight. It has been known for some time that the character “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harington plays in “ Eternals ” is Dane Whitman , alter ego of that hero. It’s the enigmatic ending of the scene that will have Marvel fans abuzz ... and confused.

It should be noted that Whitman is the good Black Knight, who first appeared in “The Avengers” No. 47 (1967), not the bad Black Knight (his uncle), who first popped up in “Tales to Astonish” No. 52 (1964), fighting Giant-Man and the Wasp. (It should also be noted this is not the Black Knight from “ Monty Python and the Holy Grail ” (1975), so don’t expect sudden dismemberings of our hero.)

By the way, “Avengers” 47 has skyrocketed in value with the news the character was coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe; a near-mint copy reportedly sold this year for more than $5,000 .

The second bonus scene, which comes after the credits, finds Dane driven by the disappearance of his girlfriend, Sersi (the Eternal played by Gemma Chan ) into confronting his birthright, the Ebony Blade . As far as excuses to not move in together go, being kidnapped by, essentially, God before her boyfriend’s eyes is a pretty good one. Thus the opening of the box he seems so reluctant to peek inside. To be fair, who wouldn’t be hesitant when there’s an inscription under the lid that translates to “Death is my reward”?

And what’s in the box? The blade hewn by Merlin — yes, that Merlin — from a meteor (as are all good things in the MCU). In the comics, it went on to have quite a checkered history involving the Avengers, the Inhumans and Dracula , among others.

By legend, the weapon was around in the time of King Arthur; by publication, it predates the Silver Age of Marvel (the 1960s generation of heroes such as Iron Man and Spider-Man who form the backbone of the MCU). It first appeared in “Black Knight Comics” No. 1 in 1955, in the hands of the O.G. Black Knight, Arthur’s bud. One of the Celestials of Marvel the company, Stan Lee , even wrote the story.

The magic sword has a number of abilities in the comics, chief among them indestructibility and the ability to cut through just about anything (including mystical barriers). It also grants its wielder protection from energy blasts and magic attacks. It’s a big deal. However, it is also cursed and has a habit of amping up its user’s bloodlust. What did you expect, with that motto.

How director Chloé Zhao made ‘Eternals’ epic, intimate and unlike anything else in the MCU

Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao has joined a growing club of renowned indie filmmakers tapped by Marvel to helm massive-budget projects. In her case, it’s ‘Eternals.’

Nov. 4, 2021

While Dane is just one in a long line of Black Knights dating to King Arthur’s Round Table, he’s the first to join the Avengers (and Defenders , and others). Marvel fans knew all this coming into “Eternals,” of course, though the uninitiated may have enjoyed seeing Harington in the apparently flipped “helpless girlfriend” trope, here immortal heroine Sersi’s helpless mortal boyfriend.

As far as Avengers go, Black Knight is one of the least physically powerful. But he’s a great fighter, especially with a sword, who’s in excellent shape for a human. Oh, and he can ride a horse really well.

The real mystery of the post-credits scene comes at the very end when an unidentified voice asks, “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”

What voice? Who? Where? Or maybe ... when ?

The scene ends immediately after Dane hears those words; the voice goes by too quickly for positive identification. However ...

While theories have ranged from Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury to Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror , Fandom.com reports that “Eternals” director Chloé Zhao confirmed to the site that the voice is none other than Mahershala Ali. The two-time Oscar-winning actor was announced in 2019 as the star of the MCU’s upcoming version of Blade the Vampire Slayer (he of the 1998-2004 Wesley Snipes films). According to Fandom’s Eric Goldman, Zhao told him, “That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself. Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah!”

Why ‘Eternals’ cast Salma Hayek as a Marvel superhero who leads with love

‘Eternals’ star Salma Hayek and writer-director Chloe Zhao on how the MCU epic opens up different views on what it means to be a superhero.

The site also reports that Harington told it, “It’s really cool. [Chloé] texted me about that a couple of weeks ago and it sort of blew my mind. I didn’t know that that would be the case, so it’s pretty exciting for me.”

The Times has reached out to Disney for comment.

Blade is a half-human, half-vampire “day walker” who first appeared in “The Tomb of Dracula” No. 10 (1973). Despite his half-bloodsucker lineage, per his nickname, he’s no friend to the vampire; hence the appropriateness of a possible alliance between him and the wielder of the Ebony Blade.

How the Black Knight fits into Blade’s MCU adventures, we can’t know yet (“A Boy and His Blades”?). But if that cuts deep, knowing you’ll have to wait for the reveal in a future Marvel movie, take heart: It’s only a flesh wound.

How the Eternals end-credits scenes raise questions about the team's MCU future

what is the eternals end credits

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Eternals .

When Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) donned the Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers: Endgame and snapped his fingers to resurrect everyone who died, he also revived EW's Marvel Movie Club series, which revisited every Marvel movie in the lead-up to 2017's Avengers: Infinity War. EW's Chancellor Agard re-examined one Marvel movie a week, every week, to reassess its powers and hopefully answer important questions like "What was The Incredible Hulk ?" "Does Nick Fury wash his eyepatch?" and "Is there a point to Hawkeye?" along the way. In this special edition of the series, we dissect the Eternals end-credits scenes and what they might mean for the future of the MCU.

Eternals raised more questions about the titular band of heroes' future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than it answers.

Directed by Chloe Zhao, the centuries-spanning 26th Marvel movie stars Gemma Chan (Sersi), Angelina Jolie (Thena), and many more as a group of super-powered beings who were created by the godlike Celestial Arishem and sent to Earth to protect humanity from the predatory Deviants — or so they thought. Upon reuniting in the present day, the gang discovers that their real mission was to help Earth develop until the birth of a new Celestial from its core, which is an apocalyptic event. Thus, it fell on the team — at least those who were willing — to save humanity from destruction.

This is a Marvel movie that isn't Avengers: Infinity War , so of course they succeeded. However, their victory came at a price and, interestingly, open the door for some new opportunities, too. Below, we break down the movie's two end-credit scenes and what they could mean for the characters' futures in the MCU.

The mid-credits scene: He's so golden

Eternals ' first post-movie scene introduces two new yet major characters. The movie ends with the titular super-family splitting off into groups. Sersi, Phastos ( Brian Tyree Henry ), and Kingo ( Kumail Nanjiani ) decided to stay on Earth while Thena, Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) venture to the stars in the Domo. Unfortunately, Arishem abducts the former group soon after so he can probe their memories and judge if saving humanity was worth the death of a Celestial.

The mid-credit scenes picks up weeks later with the space-bound trio, who haven't heard from their siblings in a while and decide to return to Earth because they deduce what must've happened to them. However, before they have a chance to change their course, hope arrives in the form of two surprising new people who portal onto the ship: Eros, a.k.a. Starfox, a charming and adventurous Eternal played by Harry Styles , and his companion Pip, a troll voiced by Patton Oswalt . But Eros isn't just any other Eternal, he's Thanos' brother and Prince of Titan (among other things).

"Your friends are in big trouble, and we know where to find them," says Eros, revealing he possesses a golden sphere similar to the one Ajak and Sersi used to communicate with Arishem throughout the movie.

The introduction of Eros and his relationship to Thanos suggests that Josh Brolin's genocidal Mad Titan is also an Eternal, which is in line with Marvel mythology. In the Marvel lore, Thanos is a Eternal with the Deviant gene, which explains why he looks nothing like his human-appearing brother or the other Eternals.

If Thanos is also an Eternal in the MCU, then this reveal initially appears to contradict his established backstory — specifically that Titan is his home world — given what we learned about the Eternals here. For most of their lives, the Earth-based Eternals believed they hailed from the planet Olympia; however, midway midway through the movie, they discover that's false and that Arishem actually created them. Does this mean Arishem also created Thanos and Eros? (And if so, then what are we to make of the several shots of Titan we saw in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame ?) The answer is not necessarily, at least based on the comics. In the mythology, Thanos and Eros are Eternals because their parents were. While it remains to be seen whether the MCU will stick to the canon, there's evidence that suggest it will: The Red Skull greets Thanos as "son of A'lars" — who is his father in the comics — in Avengers: Infinity War.

Thankfully, we know we'll get answers eventually because, as the end of the movie promises, the Eternals will return. Whether that's in a direct sequel or appearances in one of Marvel's many other projects remains to be seen.

The end-credits scene: Name that voice!

After the credits finish rolling, the action returns to Sersi's human boyfriend Dane Whitman ( Kit Harington ), who was just about to tell her about his "complicated" family history when Arishem took her. In this scene, an anxious Dane opens a case that is inscribed with the words "Death is my reward" and contains a majestic yet scary looking sword that starts whispering. Both the weapon and its prospective wielder have ties to the Marvel mythology.

In the pages of Marvel Comics, Dane is the hero Black Knight, which is a moniker that has been passed down through his family for ages along with the Ebony Blade, a magical sword. Unfortunately, the Ebony Blade is cursed and will slowly corrupt whoever wields it as more blood is shed. While it's unclear what the rules are surrounding the MCU's version of the Ebony Blade, Dane's uneasiness over picking it up indicates there is a cost to using it.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that the Eternals are at least somewhat aware of the sword's existence. Upon returning to the Domo ahead of the final battle, Thena started practicing with a real sword she found among Makkari's items and Sprite asked if it was the Ebony Blade. It wasn't. Nevertheless, this does raise some questions: How does Sprite know what the Ebony Blade is? Does Sersi know what it is and about Dane's connection to it? If so, is that why she was dating him? The most likely scenario is that Sprite and Sersi weren't aware about Dane's relationship to it, and that Sprite simply heard about the Ebony Blade over the many years she's spent on Earth.

But back to the end-credit scene: We never see Dane actually pick it up because someone, a mysterious off-screen voice, stops him. "Sure you're ready for that, Mr. Whitman?" says the deep voice.

Unfortunately, we don't find out who is speaking, but we have a couple of guesses. When EW saw the movie the first time, our initial guess was Mahershala Ali , who is set to star as Blade in an upcoming movie. Perhaps the MCU is going super literal and is establishing a connection between the Black Knight's Ebony Blade and, well, Ali's half-human vampire hunter Blade. Jeffrey Wright , who voiced The Watcher, the all-seeing multiverse observer, on Disney+'s What If…? , is also another possible candidate, because if anyone could suddenly appear in presumably locked room, it's him. Either way, we know it's someone we haven't met yet on the big screen, or else Marvel would've just shown them instead of leaving us in the dark life this.

Both of end-credit scenes tease there's more stories to be told about these character, however it's unclear how and where they will intersect with the rest of the MCU's characters.

Eternals is showing in theaters right now.

Eternals ending and post-credits scenes explained

Major Eternals spoilers follow

An official promotional image for Marvel Studios' Eternals

Huge spoilers follow for Eternals’ ending. You have been warned.

Eternals has finally been released in theaters, and it appears to set up some new Marvel projects through its ending and post-credits scenes. Yep, there are two end credits scenes to stick around for, but you should know that Marvel loves to tease us by now.

But what exactly do they tease? And how does this fit into the wider MCU ? Below, we’ll attempt to answer those questions with our comic book knowledge, as well as what we know from Marvel's other movie and TV productions.

Be warned, though: we’re about to delve into massive spoilers for Eternals’ ending, and potentially for future Marvel projects – so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, you’ll want to leave this page now.

Eternals ending explained: what happens to Sersi, Kingo and Phastos?

A promotional image of Arishem the Judge in Marvel Studios' Eternals

After defeating the Deviants and preventing Tiamut’s emergence – an event that would have destroyed the Earth – the Eternals prepare to go their separate ways again.

Or so they think. Sersi reunites with Dane Whitman in London but, just as Dane is about to tell Sersi about his own family secret, the skies darken. Arishem the Judge, the Eternals’ creator and Lord of the Celestials, suddenly appears through the clouds, which scatters the assembled crowd.

Furious with the Eternals for stopping the birth of a new Celestial – namely, Tiamut – Arishem grabs Sersi and takes her into space, before doing likewise with Kingo and Phastos.

Surprisingly, though, Arishem tells Sersi, Kingo and Phastos that, despite their betrayal, he won’t exact judgement on Earth or its human population for the time being. But he will return, and make a decision on whether humanity deserves to live or die. Arishem departs with his captives, and the skies over London clear. The camera zooms in on a shocked Dane before the screen cuts to black.

Confused? Thankfully, Marvel’s comics hold the key to explaining why Arishem may return to Earth and exact judgement on humanity. The Celestials – who created the Marvel universe – regularly return to planets that support intelligent life. When they do, they check to see how each world’s dominant species, which they created, is progressing. If they aren’t evolving fast enough, or if they’ve followed the wrong path, such as enslaving other species on their planet, the Celestials destroy that world’s dominant species and start over. These occasions are known as Host events.

So it seems that an Eternals sequel might be centered around Arishem’s return to judge whether humanity should be allowed to survive. There’s no guarantee that Eternals 2 will happen, though. Eternals producer Nate Moore recently told The Toronto Sun that a sequel wasn’t a “must-have”, so we’ll have to wait and see if a follow-up is forthcoming.

Eternals mid-credits scene explained: who is Starfox, aka Eros the Titan?

Some of the cast in Marvel's Eternals movie

Eternals’ mid-credits scene takes place on the Domo, the supergroup’s spaceship. Thena, Makkari and Druig, who departed Earth in order to find other Eternals, are concerned that they haven’t heard from Sersi and company in weeks,

Suddenly, the trio’s conversation is interrupted by an unknown individual. They prepare to fight their ship’s invader – but, to their surprise, the person in question is nothing more than a beer-swilling troll. He introduces himself as Pip, who is voiced by Patton Oswalt (MODOK, Parks and Recreation).

Pip, though, isn’t the mid-credits scene’s major reveal. Stepping back, he announces the arrival of Thanos’s brother – Starfox, aka Eros the Titan, who is portrayed by none other than Harry Styles (Dunkirk). He tells the trio that he can help to locate Sersi and the others, before revealing that he’s also in possession of one of the Celestials’ communication devices. And then the screen cuts to black again.

So who is Starfox? As we said, he’s Thanos’s brother but, unlike the MCU’s first big bad, Starfox isn’t a Deviant. Instead, he’s an Eternal who possesses numerous abilities. Those include superhuman strength, speed, endurance, flight, and the ability to control other people’s emotions.

A screenshot of Starfox, aka Eros the Titan, in Marvel Comics

Starfox made his comic debut in February 1973 as part of an Iron Man series run. In the near 50-year period since, he’s been a member of the Eternals, the Avengers, and the Dark Guardians, although the latter group is yet to appear in the MCU.

As for Pip the troll, his first comic appearance was in February 1975. Initially a villain who fought Adam Warlock, Pip becomes an ally of Marvel’s superheroes, including Silver Surfer. His only superpower is the ability to teleport, though, so he’s not exactly useful in major battles.

How, then, will the pair fit into the MCU? It seems that Starfox could play a key role in an Eternals sequel. If he knows where Arishem has taken Sersi, Kingo and Phastos, the other Eternals will need his help. It’ll also be interesting to learn where Starfox’s Eternals group is, given that he and Pip are the only ones who appear before Thena, Makkari and Druig. Are his allies dead, or simply waiting for the duo to return with more Eternals? That’s currently unclear, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the former. This is the MCU after all, so while Starfox may give off the impression that he’s a confident, fun-loving ladies’ man, he may have some deep-seated trauma that may be revealed in the future.

Alternatively, Starfox and the Eternals could find themselves teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel loves its superhero crossovers and, as we stated above, Pip has a comic book history with Adam Warlock, who’s set to appear in Guardians 3. Could we see an intergalactic team-up between the two groups in a battle against the Celestials? It’s possible, although the current Guardians team won’t be the one that might tackle Arishem and company. Guardians 3 director James Gunn has already confirmed that the current lineup won’t survive past the series’ third installment. Still, it would be fun to see it happen.

Eternals post-credits scene explained: who is Kit Haringon's Black Knight?

Dane Whitman and Sersi looking shocked in Marvel Studios' Eternals

Once the credits have rolled, we’re reunited with Dane Whitman. He’s in his office at London’s Natural History Museum, and he’s standing in front of his desk with a lengthy, rectangular box sitting on it.

Dane psyches himself up to open it, and he lifts the lid to reveal a rather menacing-looking black sword that’s wrapped in bandages. Evil whispers dissipate into the air after he opens the box, too, which doesn’t fill us or Dane with confidence. Dane reads an inscription on the inside of the box – ‘Death is my reward’ – before he apologizes to an unnamed individual and says “I have to try.”.

No sooner has he finished his sentence, however, than a mysterious off-screen character makes themselves heard. “Are you sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”, the person asks. Dane spins around to see who it is – and, yes, you’ve guessed it, the screen cuts to black.

If you’ve been keeping up with Eternals’ development, you’ll know what this scene teases. If you’re unfamiliar with the source material, though, allow us to explain…

A screenshot of Dane Whitman as Black Knight in Marvel comics

In the comics, Dane is the latest Whitman family descendant, and he holds a particularly ominous title: the Black Knight. This individual possesses the Ebony Blade, a mystical sword – the black blade that we mentioned above, no less – created as a dark counterpart to Excalibur, King Arthur’s legendary sword. It grants superhuman abilities to its user, including the ability to deflect magic, quickly heal a user’s wounds, manifest shadow armor, cut through physical objects and absorb all forms of energy.

But the Ebony Blade carries a curse. The original Black Knight – Nathan Garrett, who was Dane’s uncle – was a supervillain, and the blood that he spilled led to the blade becoming cursed. After he assumes the mantle, though, Dane vows to use it for good, even though the Ebony Blade’s curse feeds on the negative traits of its wielder.

So it seems that much of the Black Knight’s comic origins will carry over into the MCU. We suspect that Dane will wield the Ebony Blade to try and save Sersi, but he’ll need to enter the MCU’s more mystical realms to do so. Could that lead to a crossover with magic wielders like Doctor Strange or Shang-Chi? In our view, it’s entirely possible. But, there is someone else that he may team up with first...

Eternals post-credits scene explained: who was the voice at the end?

Kingo battles a Deviant in Marvel Studios' Eternals movie

As for who that mysterious off-screen person is: it’s none other than Mahershala Ali’s Blade, with Zhao confirming as much in an interview with Fandom . Does that mean we’ll see Dane team up with the vampiric superhero in the latter’s upcoming solo movie? We certainly hope so. When asked about Dane’s future MCU appearances, producer Nate Moore told ComicBook.com “that is something that we get to play with down the road”. So it seems that Dane will be crossing over into a few other Marvel productions.

Alternatively, the Black Knight could get his own spin-off. We’d be down for a Black Knight Disney Plus series, and given that other Marvel movie supporting characters have gotten, or will get, their own spin-offs, the Black Knight seems like the perfect candidate for a similar treatment. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before we find out more.

what is the eternals end credits

'Eternals' has 2 must-watch end-credits scenes. Here's what they mean for future Marvel movies.

  • Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for Marvel's "Eternals."
  • There are two extra scenes after the movie ends, one of which hints at a hero's origin story.
  • One scene reveals a new character played by a superstar.

Insider Today

Marvel's next big movie, " Eternals ," has two must-see scenes for fans.

You know the drill by now. If you head out to see the film in theaters, make sure to stay until the very end for not one, but two end-credits scenes that reveal a shocking new character and tease the origins of another hero in the making.

If you left early or saw the scenes and were a bit puzzled, we have you covered.

In the first end-credits scene, a superstar musician makes an unexpected appearance

After the main credits roll, we return aboard the Domo where Thena (Angelina Jolie), Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) are traveling in space in search of other Eternals to enlighten them of everything they've learned about the true nature of their maker, the Celestial Arishem.

Unaware of what happened at the film's end (Arishem scooped up the remaining Eternals — Kingo, Phastos, and Sersi — from Earth to punish them for stopping the creation of another Celestial), Makkari tells the others that it's been weeks since they've heard from the rest of the group.

"It's like they disappeared," Makkari says.

"Arishem," Thena responds, adding that they need to return to Earth.

Suddenly, there's a disturbance down the hallway of the ship. A small creature enters via teleportation and gives a large, over-the-top introduction to a man who slowly enters the frame. (We're slightly questioning Domo's security system.)

"Royal Prince of Titan, brother of Thanos, the Knave of Hearts, defeater of Black Roger, the great adventurer, Starfox," says the creature.

In walks Harry Styles in a red, white, and gold costume.

"What a pleasure to make your acquaintance my fellow Eternals," Starfox says before telling his comrade he doesn't need to introduce him every time he enters a location.

Thena interrupts the two as they quibble to ask what's on everyone's mind, "Who are you?"

Styles' character meets Thena's gaze and introduces himself as another Eternal.

"I'm Eros. This is Pip," he says of his traveling companion, adding, "And you are as beautiful as the legends say."

Druig suspiciously asks what the two want, and Eros claims he's there to help.

"Your friends are in big trouble and we know where to find them," Eros says as the scene ends.

Here's what to know about the Mad Titan's (very handsome) brother, Eros, aka Starfox, played by Harry Styles

If you're a big Styles fan, you may not have been as surprised to see the singer show up in the film. For months, fans speculated that Styles may star in the superhero franchise .

While speaking with Insider, Ridloff shared the scene was filmed in January during reshoots, saying, "That's when they had added that scene and I was shocked because I didn't even know exactly what we were shooting until we got there on set that day."

Director Chloé Zhao told Cinemablend she pitched the idea of introducing Starfox and casting Styles in the role.

"I love the idea of getting to know Thanos' brother," Zhao said. "He's an Eternal, and the idea of him having gone through what the Eternals have gone through, doing their works for the Celestials is very interesting. And how that might have affected Thanos to become who he is today, I love that idea."

Eros made his first comic appearance in 1973's "The Invincible Iron Man" issue No. 55 . A charming Eternal who can control others' emotions (similar to Druig's powers in the film), Eros has teamed up with various heroes to take down Thanos. He even joined the Avengers where he was given the name Starfox. At one point, he made a group called the Dark Guardians while trying to prevent his brother's resurrection.

Though he's a hero, at heart Eros is an adventurer and quite the womanizer (you may have picked up on that from his brief flirtation with Thena). It's gotten him into some hot water in the comics.

Still curious about Eros? You can read more of a deep dive on Styles' character here .

Who was the character who introduced Starfox? That's Pip the Troll, voiced by Patton Oswalt.

If you thought that voice sounded familiar, the credits confirm Oswalt voiced Pip, something the comedian hinted about on Twitter .

A former prince, Pip was transformed into a troll after befriending a group of them and drinking their ale. After getting into trouble, the mischievous creature became Adam Warlock's traveling companion (and Marvel's comedic relief).

Related stories

Originally introduced in 1975's "Strange Tales" issue Vol. 1 No. 179 , Pip likes to go out, party, and get girls — something that makes him a perfect sidekick to Eros.

In the comics, Warlock eventually gave Pip one of the Infinity stones, the space stone, to hold onto. Pip used it to teleport and was around it for so long that it eventually gave him the ability to teleport. We'll have to wait and see if the MCU version of Pip was ever around any Infinity stones. At the least, we know he teleported onto the Domo with Starfox.

How do these two fit into the future of the MCU? They've run into a lot of familiar faces.

Eros has connections to a lot of characters in the MCU, most notably Kang the Conqueror,  who was just introduced in "Loki," which leads to Eros using time-travel technology.

In the comics, Starfox is friends with Mar-Vell (the character played by Annette Bening in "Captain Marvel.") Maybe this version of Starfox knows Brie Larson's Captain Marvel. After all, she was busy checking on other places affected by the Blip during "Avengers: Endgame."

Pip, meanwhile, has had a run-in with the Fantastic Four and Professor Xavier of the X-Men and could be a link to introducing them into the MCU down the line.

Both Eros and Pip have had ties to Adam Warlock, a character who will be formally introduced in 2023's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." We wouldn't be surprised if Starfox popped up briefly in the sequel. Starfox has also been linked with She-Hulk, who's receiving her own Disney+ series.

At the end of "Eternals," Starfox seems set on helping the others face Arishem, a Celestial who decides what planets get to live and die. Maybe Starfox is rallying a group to go up against the Celestials.

In the second end-credits scene, Dane Whitman encounters a suspicious sword.

Back in London, Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) is in a large room, likely at the Natural History Museum where he works. A long wooden box is laid out on a table.

Whitman is uncertain about whether or not to open the box. Talking to himself, he gives himself a pep talk saying, "You can do this."

Whitman opens the box to reveal a sword wrapped up. There's writing scrawled on the box above it. Whitman translates it to read, "Death is my reward."

"I'm sorry. I have to try," Whitman says as he reaches out to the sword.

A mystery voice offscreen interrupts Whitman before he can touch the sword saying, "Sure you're ready for that Mr. Whitman?"

What was that sword? Say hello to the Ebony Blade.

The Ebony Blade, which goes by a few names — "The Cursed Black Sword," Midnight Blade, the "Dark Sword," and (our personal favorite) "Chaos the Doombringer" — was forged by Merlin as a counter to Excalibur and, in the comics, belonged to Sir Percy of Scandia, King Arthur's best warrior. With the sword, Sir Percy took on the heroic mantle of the Black Knight.

The Ebony Blade is supposed to be one of the most powerful weapons on Earth. In the comics, it's able to cut through anything (except maybe Adamantium; that's up for debate) and can repel magic (very useful since the MCU is starting to deal with the multiverse). If you unleash the sword's full power, it will envelop the wielder in a suit of black armor, which, you have to admit, sounds pretty cool.

Overall, it sounds like a very useful weapon, right? Yes and no.

Unfortunately, the sword comes with a price. Anyone who wields the blade is subjected to its dark magic, a curse that slowly causes its owner to become bloodthirsty and eventually drives them mad. (Think "The Lord of the Rings" and Gollum.) According to a 2021 run of "The Black Knight," in the wrong hands, the sword has the power to "destroy worlds." Not great.

Over time, the sword was passed down from Sir Percy to Nathan Garrett, Dane's uncle. In the comics, Garrett used the sword to take on the villainous persona of the Black Knight.

In addition to the Black Knight, other Marvel characters, including Black Panther, Valkyrie, and Sersi have used the sword over time.

Whitman is taking the first steps towards his own superhero journey. The Black Knight is likely on the way.

At the end of "Eternals," Dane tries to tell Sersi what's been going on with him the entire movie while she's been off saving the planet. Dane's been doing some research into his ancestry and mentions that his "family history is complicated."

Before he can say more, Sersi is kidnapped by Arishem before Dane's eyes.

The post-credits scene picks up with what Dane likely wanted to share with Sersi in the discovery of this mystery sword.

Comic fans likely became giddy when they saw the sword. In the comics, Dane eventually wields the sword and takes on the mantle of the Black Knight, reclaiming the title as a hero who eventually works alongside and joins the Avengers.

At the film's end, a mystery voice warns Dane just as he's about to touch the blade. Who was that? Blade.

Though we thought the voice could've been Sir Percy's spirit trying to warn his descendant of the blade's curse, that's not the case. Zhao confirmed to Fandom the voice belonged to none other than Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, who was cast as vampire hunter Blade a few years ago.

"That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself," Zhao told Fandom .

Ali was announced to play the human/vampire hybrid in a movie of his own during 2019's San Diego Comic-Con .

Harington told Insider when he took the part of Dane, the idea was to 'be in some future version of some movie.'

Harington recently told Insider that he was "kind of excited that Dane comes into contact with this sword," when asked about filming the post-credit scene.

"That we hear this mysterious voice that asks him if he's ready," he continued, "it makes me want to see what's next and the fact that might include me is exciting."

Harington said that he's aware of the online speculation about the potential trajectory for his character in the MCU, but he's not really sure what's next. Still, he hinted we'll see his character again on the big screen instead of a Disney+ series.

"When I took on this part, there's the idea that I would be in some future version of some movie somewhere, playing a continuation of this character in some iteration, but that's all I really know," Harington admitted.

"I've obviously read stuff on the internet about who he is or could be," Harington said. "That's all very interesting, but ... things change in the movie world and I don't want to try and like second-guess what I might be doing."

"Eternals," also starring Gemma Chan and Salma Hayek, is in theaters now. You can read our review here .

Eternals’ End Credit Scenes Explained: What Happens, And What They Mean For The Future

Spoiler warning!

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Eternals . If you have not yet seen the film, proceed at your own risk!

After the year-long break that was 2020, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is back in full swing, and Phase 4 is off to a fast start. In the last few months we’ve seen the release of three new blockbusters, including Cate Shortland’s Black Widow , Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings , and now Chloé Zhao’s Eternals – and while they all add new flavors to the ever-growing franchise, one thing that they all have in common is that they deliver their own double doses of end credits scenes.

Having dug into the special codas in Black Widow and Shang-Chi after their respective releases , it’s now time to examine Eternals ’ end credits scenes – both of which set up some pretty huge things in the future of the MCU. Before we dig into their significance, let’s quickly recap exactly what it is that happens…

The Domo in Eternals

What Happens In Eternals’ End Credit Scenes

Following what could be described as the standard that has been established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe going back to Joss Whedon ’s The Avengers , Eternals begins its end credits action with a sequence that plays out following the final title sequence that showcases the primary stars and filmmakers behind the blockbuster. We are brought out deep into the cosmos where the Domo is flying through space, with Thena (Angelina Jolie), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) and Druig (Barry Keoghan) on board.

A disturbance is perceived by the heroes – specifically one caused by Arishem’s arrival on Earth to take Sersi ( Gemma Chan ), Kingo ( Kumail Nanjiani ), and Phastos ( Brian Tyree Henry ) for judgement – and Thena calls for the group to reverse course. That specific urgency is quickly diminished, however, as the trio realizes that their ship is experiencing its own dose of weird. Lights begin to flash, and a disembodied voice begins to speak.

It turns out that this voice belongs to none other than Pip The Troll ( Patton Oswalt ), who speechifies and heralds the arrival of another Eternal who the diminutive alien identifies as Starfox and the brother of Thanos: Eros ( Harry Styles ). As Thena, Makkari and Druig react in confusion – particularly struck by the line about the guy’s sibling – Eros swaggers in and immediately comments on Thena’s legendary beauty. Getting down to business, the mysterious new acquaintance announces that the Eternals on Earth are in big trouble, but that he knows how to find them. It’s at this point that he reveals that he is in possession of one of the special orbs that allows for communication with the Celestials, and the credits continue.

Again as per usual, the second Eternals end credits sequence begins immediately after the scroll has ended. It returns the action of the film to Earth, and centers on Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington), who is shown to be dealing with a pretty massive choice. He may have just witnessed his girlfriend being sucked into the sky by a god-like being, but he is also extremely preoccupied by major revelations that he’s discovered about his family history.

Presumably at home, Dane is transfixed by a long box that he is clearly beyond nervous to open. Telling himself that he “can do this,” he unlatches the case and finds exactly what he expects inside: the mythical Ebony Blade, and a Latin inscription that translates as “Death Is My Reward.” The sword practically seems alive as he shakily reaches to touch it – which is an action that he seems regretful to do, as he says aloud, “I’m sorry, I have to try.”

Just as he is about to grab the legendary weapon, however, an unfamiliar voice from off-camera loudly says, “You sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?” Before Dane can respond verbally or physically, the movie cuts to black and the studio title cards.

Given that these two end credits sequences lead to very different future branches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the cast of characters in Eternals , let’s dig into them individually and speculate what they respectively mean for the future of the franchise.

The Eternals drop out of the Domo in Eternals

What The Arrival Of Eros Means For The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Deviating (no pun intended) from the source material, the main narrative in Eternals introduces some massive revelations about the origins of the titular group. Rather than being real, organic beings from a world known as Olympia, they are in actuality specific creations of the Celestials designed to foster life on a planet until the core of the world is ready to give birth to a new Celestial. This information totally changes the perspectives of all the main characters and how they view their existence – which makes the introduction of Eros pretty damn fascinating.

During the virtual press day for Eternals , I asked Chloé Zhao about the arrival of Starfox in the end credits, and she noted that she was the one who pitched the idea (including the casting of Harry Styles) to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige . She also confirmed that he is an Eternal just like Sersi, Thena, Kingo, and the rest of them, though he obviously has a whole different origin story that can be explored in a future project. Said Zhao,

I love the idea of getting to know Thanos' brother. He's an Eternal, by the way, our version of it, he's an Eternal, and the idea of him having gone through what the Eternals have gone through, doing their works for the Celestials is very interesting. And how that might have affected Thanos to become who he is today, I love that idea.

You can watch Chloé Zhao discuss the Eros end credits scene in the clip from my interview below:

In the wake of Eternals and the introduction of Harry Styles as Eros, Marvel fans will be quick to remind everyone not in the know that Thanos in the pages of Marvel Comics is a Deviant – a more highly evolved version of the monstrous villains featured in the new Marvel blockbuster. Should this be made officially canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will add whole new shades to the character’s backstory, especially enhancing the sequence in Avengers: Infinity War when the giant purple alien talks about his history growing up on Titan.

Between the events of the main film and the major revelations in the mid-credits scene, Eternals ’ ending seems to set up the story for a potential Eternals 2 – but that’s a project that has not yet gotten the official green light from Marvel Studios just yet. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the coming days, weeks, and months with the movie and follow what develops.

Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman in Eternals

Dane Whitman Is About To Go On One Crazy Journey As The Black Knight

Prior to the Eternals post-credits scene, there are three direct hints about the Marvel Cinematic Universe future for Dane Whitman. One comes when there is confusion between Excalibur and the Ebony Blade when Thena is picking up a sword on the Domo; a second is when Sersi suggests that Dane patch up his relationship with his estranged uncle; and the third is at the very end when the young teacher prepares to tell his girlfriend about his bizarre family history.

It all points in one specific direction: Dane Whitman is going to become the hero known as The Black Knight.

Admittedly this isn’t all that shocking . When Kit Harrington was first announced as being a part of the Eternals cast, it was revealed that he would be playing Dane Whitman, and comic book fans immediately identified the character by his more famous moniker. What we didn’t know is exactly how much time the film would dedicate to setting up his backstory – and ultimately what we get is a sizable tease.

The Black Knight first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics in December 1967, introduced by Roy Thomas and John Buscema in The Avengers #47. Rather than being a single character in the canon, Black Knight is a title that has been held by Dane Whitman’s ancestors going back to the reign of King Arthur.

Prior to Dane becoming the armor-clad hero, his uncle Nathan Garrett is bestowed the name, though he winds up desecrating it and shaming the legacy by becoming a supervillain. Prior to his death, Garrett confesses to his nephew what he has done and begs that he take up the Black Knight mantle and restore its honor.

This is very clearly set up as the perfect start for a classic “hero’s quest” (which is very much the point), but there is a catch that comes with the gig. The Ebony Blade is a powerful weapon, but it is also cursed: as its wielder uses it to draw the blood of enemies, it slowly drives them to madness.

We can’t be precisely sure at this juncture just how closely the Marvel Cinematic Universe will stick to this comic book history for the character, but what we learn in Eternals suggests that the continuity will stay faithful to the source material. The hints about Dane’s shady uncle could easily be broadened to reveal a particular history of supervillain-y, and the Ebony Blade is very clearly dangerous, as recognized by the warning delivered before Dane can pick it up.

So how will the legend of the Black Knight in the MCU continue? That’s another major question mark, and one made more complicated by the fact that the franchise is now operating in multiple mediums. It wouldn’t be shocking in the slightest to learn that the Kit Harrington character will soon be getting his very own blockbuster, adding “medieval adventure” as another new genre explored by the canon on the big screen. Simultaneously, it could end up being that Eternals is setting the hero up to get his own limited or on-going series on Disney+.

As of right now, we definitely have more questions than answers… but that’s pretty typical when it comes to Marvel post-credits scenes.

To revisit the action at the very end of Eternals , fans can now see the film exclusively in theaters. To learn about everything that is coming up in the next few years from the MCU, check out our Upcoming Marvel Movies and Upcoming Marvel TV guides.

Eternals post-credits scenes explained, and how they hold the keys to the MCU's future

Who's that voice? With the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie now on Disney Plus, let's look at the two extra scenes and their trio of epic cameos.

what is the eternals end credits

Thena may or may not appear in one of the post-credits scenes.

Eternals  arrived on  Disney Plus  in January, bringing the Marvel Cinematic Universe to trippy cosmic places. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao 's movie establishes a new team of immortal heroes tasked with defending Earth from the deadly Deviants, and it includes mid- and post-credits scenes that'll get you hyped for the MCU's future.

The movie takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame , which saw the Mad Titan Thanos defeated and billions of vanished people returned to Earth after five years. Our separate ending explainer dives into how that plays into Eternals, so let's take a look at how the extra scenes hint at what's coming next.

There's only one direction you can go from there, and that'll lead you into SPOILERS .

spoilers-mcu

Visitor from Titan

The mid-credits scene brings us back to the Domo, the Eternals' ship, as Thena, Makkari and Druig seek out their counterparts on other worlds to reveal the truth of their origins -- that they're synthetic beings created by the godlike Celestials and tasked with ensuring that the Emergence of Celestials from seeded worlds, dooming their host planet's inhabitants.

They wonder why their allies back on Earth haven't been in touch and worry that the Celestial Arishem struck after they stopped Tiamut's Emergence .

Eros (Harry Styles) in Eternals

Eros makes his entrance in Eternals, along with Pip.

Those fears are confirmed by the arrival of extremely grandiose Eros ( Harry Styles ), "the royal Prince of Titan, brother of Thanos, the Knave of Hearts... defeater of Black Roger," who teleports on board with Pip the Troll (Patton Oswalt). He informs them that their friends are in "big trouble," so their mission will have to wait as Eros and Pip know how to find them.

Feels Like The First Time, a 1977 Foreigner song that sure sounds like it's about sex but apparently isn't , kicks in as the credits continue.

What does it mean?

The Eternals have a new ally, but he'll probably be an insufferable narcissist.

Avengers 232 (Eros/Starfox)

Eros has worked with the Avengers over the years.

In the comics, Eros is an Eternal who uses the codename Starfox (not to be confused with the classic Nintendo game series ) and first appeared in 1972 . Unlike angry brother Thanos, he opted for a hedonistic lifestyle as he grew up on Titan.

Aside from the usual Eternal immortality, he has the power to psychically stimulate the pleasure centers of people's brains -- which means he can manipulate their emotions and make them aroused, euphoric or sedated.

The concept of consent gets hazy around someone like that, especially since Eros fancies himself a womanizer. His behavior apparently caught up to him in 2006 She-Hulk storyline where a married woman accused him of sexual assault.

It's unlikely the family-friendly MCU will touch upon such a sensitive topic, so the nature of movie Eros' powers may be tweaked or he might be depicted a little differently. Marvel dropped an official poster showcasing Styles as Ero on Nov. 18.

Pip the Troll made his comics debut in 1975 as a royal prince who got transformed into a troll after imbibing a little too much of their enchanted liquor. He became a sidekick to the godlike being Adam Warlock and gained teleportation powers.

He apparently has a cameo in the recently released Guardians of the Galaxy game (which isn't part of the MCU canon) as well.

MCU Adam Warlock cocoon

We've only seen MCU Adam Warlock in this cozy cocoon.

Adam has only made a brief appearance in the movies so far, in one of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 's many mid-credits scenes .  Ayesha -- the enraged leader of the golden Sovereign -- announces her plan to destroy the Guardians with new creation "Adam," and we see a mysterious cocoon.

Director James Gunn confirmed that Will Poulter will play Adam in the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which is due out May 5, 2023 , and he'll likely be an antagonist for the Guardians at first. The introduction of Pip suggests their paths will cross, and that the Eternals storyline will be a factor in that movie.

Vampire hunter's debut

The post-credits scene brings us back to Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) in London. He alluded to a "complicated" family history before Sersei was grabbed by Arishem, and we find him opening a box containing an ominous looking dark sword.

Black Knight's sword in Eternals

The sword reacts as Dane Whitman draws near.

He's clearly hesitant to pick it up, which is understandable since the plaque on the box translates to "Death is my reward." It'd probably be wise to just close the box and give Avengers a call if you want to get Sersei back.

"Sure you're ready for that Mr. Whitman?" says a mysterious someone, and the scene ends.

Mahershala Ali wears Blade hat at SDCC 2019 (Getty)

We haven't seen Mahershala Ali as Blade yet, so here he is wearing a Blade hat in 2019.

Let's jump straight to the voice -- it's Blade the Vampire Hunter. Actor Mahershala Ali's delightfully smooth voice is unmistakable, and we've known since 2019 that he's been cast in the role.

You might remember the character being portrayed by Wesley Snipes in the Blade trilogy that ran from 1998 to 2004. Those movies came before the MCU, so they aren't part of its continuity, and the character will get a fresh start with Ali (Blade also had a mostly forgotten TV show on Spike in 2006, also pre-MCU).

Human-vampire hybrid Blade's first comic book appearance happened in 1973 . Eric Brooks' mother was transformed into a vampire just before he was born, giving him some of the blood-suckers' traditional powers and immunity to their bites.

His burning need for revenge against the vampire who turned his mother drove him into the vampire huntin' business, and he's been staking them in the comics ever since. He was also born in London, so it's fitting that he made his first MCU appearance in the UK capital.

blade-4.jpg

Wesley Snipes' version of Blade is the most iconic, but it's unclear if Ali's MCU version will have this look.

We don't know when his solo MCU movie will come out, but it'll reportedly be directed by Bassam Tariq (best known for helming last year's Mogul Mowgli ).

It won't be Ali's first MCU role; he previously played villain Cottonmouth in Netflix series Luke Cage . Given the multiversal crossover possibilities hinted at in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer , it's possible the new Blade could run into Snipes' version of the character at some point (this could be wild speculation on my part, but it'd be cool).

As for Mr. Whitman, he's been the sword-swinging superhero Black Knight in the comics since 1967 . Several characters have taken the mantle of Black Knight over the years, but Dane is the most prolific.

Black Knight in comics

Dane Whitman has slain many a beast as Black Knight in the comics.

He wields the Ebony Blade, an enhanced sword forged from a meteorite and passed down by Whitman's ancestors. It can slice through nearly any substance, absorb energy and be summoned telekinetically (like Thor's hammer Mjolnir).

Unfortunately for Dane, the sword is also cursed -- using it gradually drives the wielder insane. Given his MCU's counterpart's hesitation, it's likely this is the case in the movie universe as well.

We don't know why Blade is interested in Dane or the sword at this point, but he might be recruiting heroes to battle some supernatural threat (vampiric or otherwise). In the comics  Blade is a member of the Midnight Sons , a team gathered by Doctor Strange due to their links to the occult. The upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might bring a version of this group into the MCU.

Those Eternals Credits Scenes, Explained

Huge cameos! New heroes! Here's what it all means.

preview for Marvel's Eternals teaser trailer (Marvel Studios)

Our product picks are editor-tested, expert-approved. We may earn a commission through links on our site. Why Trust Us?

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe know the deal: even though the credits have started to roll, it's certainly not time to turn your TV off just yet. Granted, fans of all movies should stick around for the credits and see the names and roles that went into making the piece of art/work they just saw (movies are a miracle! seriously!) , but MCU fans in particular know that there's always going to be an added treat for their time sticking around. Sometimes, these credit sequences can be revelations and teases for the future, as they were in 2021 for fellow MCU films Black Widow , Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings , and Spider-Man: No Way Home . They'll give a little hint at what's to come and make you excited. The credits scenes for Eternals, though, blow the whole universe wide open.

Eternals is different from many of these other MCU movies. Rather than introducing one new hero or catching up with one we already know, the movie takes all of its 2 hour 37 minute runtime to introduce us to 10 new characters—those titular Eternals—and explain to us all of their powers, history, and modern-day context. Naturally, then, once that's all established it serves as a springboard of sorts to the future. So that's why the credits scenes here do a huge job as to setting up a tease and cliffhanger of sorts as to what's coming next, whether that's in an Eternals sequel or elsewhere in the MCU.

And with those main Eternals characters largely separated by the end of the film, it allows for two separate credits scenes that cast them off into wildly different directions.

The end of the film finds Arishem the Judge, the celestial who created the Eternals, calling the bill due (as Chiwetel Ejiofor's Baron Mordo, from Doctor Strange, would say), and bringing Sersei, Kingo, and others up to space. They're in trouble, and we won't see much more (until we catch up next time, whether that's in an Eternals sequel or another Cosmic-focused MCU movie we do not yet know ).

But the credits scenes do bring several of the movie's characters, and put them in places where we are particularly eager to see what happens next. Here we go.

kit harington eternals credits scenes explained

Credits Scene 1: Meet Eros, aka Star Fox (aka Harry Styles)

harry styles

The first credits scene introduces a massive superstar into the MCU: Harry Styles.

Three of our Eternals, Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Thena (Angelina Jolie) are spending time aboard their spaceship, worried about what may be happening on earth, as they haven't heard from their fellow Eternals/friends in a while. Still, they have their eyes on the prize: they're seeking out Eternals on other planets, hoping to tell them the truth about their origin and about Arishem the Judge's true intent.

Suddenly, though, they hear someone on their ship, and all of a sudden there's a big introduction happening. A creature named Pip the Troll (voiced by Patton Oswalt and presumably motion captured a la Rocket Raccoon) emerges on the ship, introducing a hero of the realm who can probably be of some service: Eros of Titan (Harry Styles), also known as Star Fox and the older brother of a guy you may have heard of named Thanos.

She-Hulk Vol. 4: Laws of Attraction (She-Hulk (2005-2009))

She-Hulk Vol. 4: Laws of Attraction (She-Hulk (2005-2009))

“Your friends are in big trouble, and we know where to find them," Eros tells the Eternals before the scene cuts out. In his Marvel Comics origin, Eros is an Eternal himself (Thanos has a Deviant gene, explaining why he looks like a big purple monster), and seems well positioned to help our heroes with their search and their next step.

Given these folks are all in space, it wouldn't be surprising if we next saw them all crossing paths with some of our other cosmic heroes, including Captain Marvel, Thor, and the Guardians of the Galaxy ( The Marvels is due out in 2023, and the latter two will both be appearing in next year's Thor: Love and Thunder).

One other potential crossover spot for our new friend Eros? In Disney+'s She-Hulk series (due out at some point in 2022), which will star Tatiana Maslany as the titular hero/attorney. In a 2005 She-Hulk comic run, Jennifer Walters (a cousin of Bruce Banner and She-Hulk's true identity) was defending Eros on Earth against charges of sexual assault, for using his charming powers (oh yeah, he can psychically control other people's emotions) to seduce a married woman. It's doubtful that Disney+ goes with that storyline, but there's canonical history between the characters.

Credits Scene 2: Dane's Up to Something

kit harington eternals credits scene explained

Kit Harington doesn't have a huge role in Eternals, but it certainly seems to be setting him up for way, way more. As Dane Whitman, Harington only appears in two scenes plus a brief bit on FaceTime, but then at the end of the movie—just before Sersei is plucked off the face of the earth by Arishem—he comes clean, telling her that he's got a bit of tricky family history of his own. But she's plucked off the face of the Earth before he can say any more.

In the second credits scene, we find Dane hyping himself as he opens a large box, looking and about to grab a large sword. Fans can assume this is the Ebony Blade, as Dane Whitman in the comic becomes Black Knight when he and the members of his family wield the blade. While Dane in the Comics becomes a hero and even an eventual Avenger, his family doesn't have quite as nice history.

In the credits scene, just as Dane is about to pick up the Ebony Blade, an off-screen voice chimes in: “Sure you’re ready for that?”

We weren't totally sure who that voice was upon hearing it in the film at first. Some thought it may have been The Watcher , played in What If...? by Jeffrey Wright. Others thought maybe it was Nick Fury rounding up a new team for some sort of new mission.

But director Chloé Zhao confirmed that person's identity to Fandom: Blade , set to be played by two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, who provided the voice in this scene. “That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself," she said. "Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah!”

The Blade movie was announced, with Ali in tow, back in 2019, and while it has no release date announced , it's set to be directed by Bassam Tariq and written by Stacy Osei-Kuffour. "You just have to wait for it," Zhao added. "I don’t know what they’re doing with the movie, but Mahershala is is a treasure. It’s going to be epic.”

Now that we know it's Blade in the scene with Dane, it's fair to expect Kit Harington to be part of the Blade movie's cast, alongside Ali and Delroy Lindo—the only two cast members to be announced so far. We don't know where we'll be seeing either Dane or Blade next, but one possible spot (and don't count on it, but it's a possibility!) is this year's Moon Knight series , which will debut on Disney+. Moon Knight, Black Knight, and Blade seem to all occupy the same dark edges of the Marvel world. And wouldn't it be great to see Ali, Harington, and Oscar Isaac in some scenes together?

Harington himself told Fandom that he didn't even know what was really going on in this scene when he was filming it; he only found out a few weeks prior to the premiere. “It’s really cool. [Chloé] texted me about that a couple of weeks ago and it sort of blew my mind," he said. "I didn’t know that that would be the case, so it’s pretty exciting for me.”

It'll be cool to see a burgeoning warrior wielding a legendary blade (in Dane/Black Knight) team up with a vampire hunter who's name is literally Blade. In fact, we literally cannot wait.

Marvel’s Eternals Post-Credits Scenes Explained: What They Mean for the MCU

Marvel's Eternals is a big movie...it's so big that it has TWO post-credits scenes! Both of which have huge implications for the future of the MCU. Here's what it all means.

Arishem the Judge, a Celestial in Marvel's Eternals

This article contains major Marvel’s Eternals spoilers. We have a spoiler-free review here .

Marvel’s Eternals probably has more heavy lifting to do than any other standalone MCU entry in years. With 10 leads, brand-new cosmic concepts that require a whole lot of dialogue to explain, a massive ending (which we explore in detail here ), and the general sense that Marvel is looking to change the very fabric of the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward, there’s a lot to take in.

And if that isn’t enough, Eternals goes ahead and introduces a new member of the Avengers in its mid-credits scene and then sets up another character for a heroic arc and the potential path to becoming a member of the Avengers in its post-credits scene.

Let’s dig into these, because there’s a lot…

Ad – content continues below

Eternals Mid-Credits Scene Explained

The remaining Eternals who weren’t killed earlier in the film or taken into space by Arishem (see ya later, Cersi and Kingo!) are hanging out on their spaceship, at the start of their quest to head out into the galaxy to find more Eternals and Celestials. That means we’re dealing with Thena, Druig, and Makkari on the Domo, pondering their next move. This scene apparently takes place several weeks after they left Earth.

And before we can be treated to more surely important exposition from this film, two intruders enter the chat…

Pip the Troll and Thanos in Marvel Comics

Who is Pip the Troll?

The first is Pip the Troll, a CGI creation voiced by Patton Oswalt. Now, a very drunk and seemingly comedic character like Pip the Troll might not necessarily herald the start of great things for the MCU for many fans, but for others, particularly Marvel Comics fans of a certain age, Pip is a big deal. For one thing, he played a major role in The Infinity Gauntlet , the classic Marvel Comics epic that inspired so much of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame .

Pip isn’t a troll in the traditional fantasy sense. Instead, he’s an alien from the planet Laxidazia (look, comics in the ‘70s could be a little on-the-nose sometimes, k?). In the comics, Pip was known for hanging around with MCU mainstays like Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and Thanos, as well as future MCU superstar, Adam Warlock .

As for what future plans the MCU might have for Pip, well…keep in mind that in the comics he was a member of the Infinity Watch, a team of cosmic beings who were each tasked with guarding one of the Infinity Stones. Each of the aforementioned Pip associates have been members of the Watch at some point, and it’s easy to imagine a post- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 scenario where the Infinity Watch comes to life in the MCU in some form.

It’s also worth noting that Pip was created by Jim Starlin, the same writer/artist who created Thanos, which plays heavily into who Pip is heralding with his arrival…

Starfox in Marvel Comics

Harry Styles as Starfox

Well, your eyes do not deceive you, for that is indeed international pop star sensation Harry Styles as Eros of Titan, perhaps better known as Starfox. And yes, Handsome Harry’s Starfox is indeed canonically known as Thanos’ brother. And yes, he’s also an Eternal, which makes Thanos an Eternal , too.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

But wait, if the Eternals of this film are all synthetic beings who apparently can’t reproduce, then how can Thanos have a brother? Well, some of that is (theoretically) explained in the comics.

Now, granted, the MCU’s Eternals are pretty different from the comics versions, but essentially, in the comics, most Eternals were prevented from reproducing by the Celestials. And as we’ve seen in the movie, some Eternals will treat Celestial word as law, while others are more likely to question it, hence the conflict between the team in the film’s third act. But in the comics, some Eternals decided they didn’t like this rule against breeding, and so went and settled on the Moon of Titan (hi, Thanos!) to be fruitful and multiply or whatever, hence the notion of family between Thanos and Starfox.

But wait, why does Thanos look…well…like Thanos, and Starfox looks like Harry Styles? That’s because Thanos’ birth was the product of his parents experimenting by mixing Eternal and Deviant DNA. Hey, we only said they were brothers not twin brothers!

Pip’s heralding of Starfox does also refer to him as Eros, which nods both to the Eternals’ tendency to have names that are influenced by (or did the influencing) of Earth myths and legends as well as his power to manipulate the emotions of others. Alongside that, Eros is as tough as you might expect an Eternal to be, with serious durability, strength, and possibly the power of flight (although that didn’t seem to be a given with every member of the cinematic Eternals).

Please correct me if I’ve got this wrong, but Pip introduces Starfox as coming from “the Mystery Planet” and as the slayer of “Black Roger.” If I heard this right, that’s an incredibly deep cut, from an almost completely forgotten Marvel Comics Presents story where Starfox defeated the ruler of “Mystery Planet,” who went by the name of “Dark Roger.”

Starfox doesn’t have much dialogue, but he does tell the assemblage of Eternals that “your friends are in big trouble and we know where to find them.” So, whatever Eternals 2 ends up being, it’s going to involve Starfox, Pip, Druig, Makkari, and Thena on that quest to rescue Cersi and Kingo, as well as finding other Celestials and Eternals along the way.

What is the song in the Eternals mid-credits scene?

It sure is a choice to have Foreigner’s “Feels Like the First Time” inexplicably playing in this scene. If anything it’s an attempt to connect the spacefaring vibes of this new franchise to a proven commodity like the Guardians of the Galaxy films. But in those movies, the incongruously vintage AM radio rock serves a story purpose, while here it doesn’t.

Starfox isn’t the most major player in the comics, but he’s been around a lot of the major cosmic conflicts since he was first created in 1973 by Jim Starlin. He’s been a member of the Avengers several times, and his arrival here now brings the total of potential MCU New Avengers introduced in this film to three, alongside Cersi and Dane Whitman, when he becomes The Black Knight…speaking of which.

Eternals Post-Credit Scene Explained

While Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman doesn’t get a lot of screen time in Eternals , it’s pretty clear almost from the moment we meet him that Marvel has big plans for the former Game of Thrones star in the MCU. Shortly after we meet him early in the film, Sersi gifts Dane a ring featuring his family crest. It’s a crest that dates back to the middle ages. Later on, he makes an offhand remark that “my family history is complicated.” These are both keys to understanding what’s happening in the Eternals post-credits scene.

What’s up with Dane Whitman and the Ebony Blade?

For one thing, Dane’s “complicated” family history is no joke . In the comics, this can be explained simply (lol) enough: Dane is the nephew of Nathan Garrett, who was once known as the villainous Black Knight. Nathan wielded the Ebony Blade…which was passed down to him through the ages by his ancestor, Sir Percy, the heroic Black Knight of the days of King Arthur. Percy himself was a cousin of King Arthur, which means that Arthur’s blood flows in Dane’s veins. Complicated enough for you?

And the thing we see Dane having anxiety over is the Ebony Blade itself. Think of the Ebony Blade as a kind of reverse-Mjolnir, in that it isn’t about being worthy, but rather it feeds on negative emotions. The blade itself was forged by Merlin from a meteor, although some tellings of the legend say that Sersi herself helped forge it. You can see there’s something otherworldly about the Blade as Dane reaches for it, as it appears to hum and vibrate.

Who is the Mysterious Voice Talking to Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman?

But then a voice stops him, asking: “are you sure you’re ready for that Mr. Whitman?” Which of course leads to more questions.  It might be hard to tell who is doing the talking with that brief line of dialogue, but fortunately, there is a definitive answer.

Mahershala Ali as Blade

Director Chloe Zhao has confirmed that this scene does in fact mark the first appearance of Blade in the MCU! That’s Mahershala Ali in his first official appearance as Marvel’s famed vampire hunter.

“That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself,” Zhao told Fandom .

Ali (who previously appeared in an MCU-adjacent role as Cottonmouth in the first season of Netflix’s Luke Cage) was cast as Blade back in 2019, and there has been a Blade movie on Marvel’s schedule for quite some time…even though it doesn’t have a release date.

In the extremely unlikely event you don’t know who Blade is, he’s Marvel’s resident vampire hunter, and arch-enemy of Dracula himself. A half-human, half-vampire “daywalker” who hunts the creatures who killed his mother (and thus guaranteed that he is condemned to a life of half-undeath). Blade was played by Wesley Snipes in three blockbuster films (two of which are great).

What does Blade want with Dane (other than their shared fondness for edged weapons)? Your guess is as good as ours, but someone with a long lifespan like Blade, and who routinely confronts semi-immortal supernatural beings may have come into contact with the mysterious Ebony Blade in the past, or even a previous wielder of it. We won’t speculate any more on that just yet, and don’t expect answers anytime soon, since at the moment it seems unlikely we’ll see the MCU’s Blade movie before 2023.

Here's What Went Down in the Eternals End Credit Scenes, Because It Was a Lot

ETERNALS, from left: Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Ma Dong-seok as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Barry Keo

After months of mystery, speculation, and hype, the wait for Marvel's Eternals is finally over! The latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe takes fans back several thousand years to when a team of super-powered heroes called the Eternals, created by the Celestials , are sent to Earth to watch over humanity and protect them from extraterrestrial threats like the Deviants . The Eternals each went their separate ways when they eradicated the last of the Deviants, but must come together again when the Deviants mysteriously emerge again in present day. While the film provides additional context about the Marvel Universe's origins, the film, especially its two end credit scenes, opens up endless possibilities for the the future of the MCU. So let's break it down, but be warned, spoilers are ahead!

What Happened in Marvel's Eternals Mid-Credit Scene?

The mid-credit scene takes places after the Eternals work together to successfully stop the Emergence on Earth and the team go their separate ways. Abroad the Domo, the Eternals' spaceship, Thena ( Angelina Jolie ), Druig ( Barry Keoghan ), and Makkari ( Lauren Ridloff ) are searching for their fellow Eternals Sersi ( Gemma Chan ), Kingo ( Kumail Nanjiani ), and Phastos ( Brian Tyree Henry ), who originally chose to remain on Earth but have been missing for weeks.

The team suddenly senses a mysterious presence and prepares to defend themselves, but are instead met with Pip the Troll. After brushing himself off, Pip stands up to proudly introduce the brother of Thanos and great adventurer Starfox (or Eros) , played by British heartthrob (and the man after all our hearts) Harry Styles . Eros greets his fellow Eternals, complementing Thena on her beauty, and reveals that Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo are in big trouble, but lets them know he knows where to find them before the scene ends.

In the comics, Eros, named after the God of love and sex in Greek Mythology, yields superhuman abilities like cosmic manipulation and pleasure stimulation. He is also Thena's cousin and teamed up with the Avengers to fight against his brother Thanos.

The scene confirms the rumors that have been circulating for weeks about Styles's introduction into the MCU and has made Harries across the internet collectively lose their minds. The actual reveal still leaves many questions about Starfox's exact role in the potential Eternals sequel and the extent of Styles's involvement in future Phase 4 MCU films .

What Happened in Marvel's Eternals Post-Credit Scene?

After witnessing his girlfriend Sersi be kidnapped by the Celestial Arishem, Dane Whitman ( Kit Harington ) is shown in what looks like an office with a mysterious and ominous sword. Dane hesitates for a while before reaching out for it. Just as he's about to touch the sword, a mysterious voice stops him and the scene cuts off.

This reveal sets up Dane Whitman's potential future in the MCU as the Avenger the Black Knight . In the comics, the Black Knight is a hero that uses the Ebony Blade, a powerful sword that protects users against magic, but it's tainted with a dark curse. Whether Dane will go down a darker path in future films and the role of the mysterious person that stopped Dane from initially touching the sword remains to be explored in upcoming films.

‘Eternals’: Who The Heck Was That Voice and What Does It Mean for the MCU?

We are all (un)dying to know.

[Editor's note: The following contains spoilers for Eternals ]

In Eternals ’ last post-credit scene , we see Dane Whitman ( Kit Harington ) admiring the Ebony Blade, a powerful weapon that belonged to the original Black Knight , King Arthur's most powerful warrior. Dane is feeling nervous about holding the sword in his own hands, as he keeps repeating to himself: “You can do it! You can do it!” Just as Dane seems to have made up his mind and he reaches to touch the Ebony Sword’s blade, a mysterious voice asks him from outside the frame: “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?” Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe don’t need to wonder for too long who’s the owner of that mysterious voice is, as we already have a clear answer. However, knowing to whom that voice belongs is just part of the mystery because now we’ll keep wondering what the heck Black Knight has to do with vampires.

So Who Is That Mysterious Voice?

Writer and director Chloé Zhao has recently revealed that the mysterious voice at the end of Eternals belongs no none other than Blade, the vampire hunter who’s set to join the MCU in a solo movie starring Mahershala Ali . That’s right, Marvel’s most famous vampire hunter is in Eternals , something no one saw coming.

Created by writer Marv Wolfman and penciler Gene Colan for 1973’s The Tomb of Dracula #10 , Eric Brooks, a.k.a. Blade, was first introduced as a supporting character. However, the hero would become so popular with fans that he would soon star in his own solo adventures. Eric’s mother had her blood drained by a vampire while he was still in her womb, turning him into a half-vampire creature himself. While Blade can still walk in the daytime—the reason why he’s also known as the Daywalker—the hero inherited the super-strength of a vampire, regenerative abilities, acute senses, and a thirst for blood. Blade fights against his bloodlust in every way he can while hunting vampires in the night.

Blade became even more famous worldwide at the end of the 90s due to a trilogy of movies starring Wesley Snipes as the hero. After Marvel announced an MCU Blade film starring Ali back at 2019’s Comic-Con , fans expected another vampire-hunting saga, maybe with some major bloodsucking characters such as Dracula. However, it seems like Blade might actually be a team movie since the post-credit scene of Eternals indicate the Daywalker is following Dane’s transformation into the hero Black Knight. Well, director Bassam Tariq did say that Blade’s MCU reboot would not stick too close to the comic book canon .

Will Black Knight Be a Part of ‘Blade’?

In Eternals , Dane goes on a personal journey to reconnect with his uncle and ends up uncovering the truth about his lineage. Dane is the distant descendant of Sir Percy of Scandia, the most powerful knight of Camelot. In the comic books, Dane’s uncle is Nathan Garrett, a man who discovers the powers of the Ebony Sword and becomes the villain Black Knight. While we haven’t seen Dane’s uncle in the MCU yet, he tries to tell Sersi ( Gemma Chan ) that he found out some disturbing truths about his family — that is, before the Celestial Arishem kidnaps Sersi.

Considering how the blade draws Dane and how hesitant he is to touch, it’s safe to assume that the MCU will stick close to the original story. So, why the heck is Blade involved with the rise of the heroic Black Knight? Well, for starters, both characters are British. Dane was born in Massachusetts, while Blade is originally from Soho, in London. Furthermore, as British superheroes, both characters are also prominent members of the MI-13, a fictional British intelligence agency created by Warren Ellis , Chris Claremont , and Michael Ryan for 1996’s Excalibur vol. 1 #101 .

Considering that Blade is either recruiting or guiding Dane, it’s not a stretch to imagine that the MCU might be preparing the ground to introduce a new superteam. We already have the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and now the Eternals. So, we would be well served with the MI-13, a grounded team whose adventures are closer to our day-to-day life. As a vampire hunter, Blade is also connected to Marvel’s mystic threats, which means he could know about the curse of the Ebony Sword and has been keeping an eye on it.

Be that as it may, it seems like Eternals post-credit scene confirms the Black Knight will be part of Blade . As for when we’ll see Ali as the Daywalker, Marvel hasn't announced an official release for Blade yet. However, one of the company’s official Twitter account published an image that put Blade ’s premiere on October 2022 . The image could be the product of a mistake, or maybe the intentional leak of a secret released. Marvel still didn’t give a statement about it, so for now, we can only hope Blade and Black Knight will soon be back.

The Eternals Ending And Post Credits Explained -- Who Was The Mysterious Voice?

The Eternals is now in theaters and the MCU's Phase 4 is more densely populated than ever before. Here's what it all means.

By Mason Downey on November 11, 2021 at 6:37AM PST

Eternals has finally arrived, officially placing us 75% of the way through Marvel's banner 2021--a major comeback from the total lack of releases in 2020. And, like every other MCU movie (or TV show) that's come out this year, Eternals is different, to put it mildly. A complete and total departure from the formula that has served Marvel Studios for decades, the story introduces a whole host of brand-new characters and concepts that are definitely going to come into play as Phase 4 continues.

So, naturally, we've got to talk about the ending and subsequent post-credits scenes. Obviously, we're getting into major spoilers here so if you've been avoiding them thus far, be warned.

While Eternal's chief "bad guys," or at least the monsters that are getting punched and blasted with lasers are the Deviants, the actual threat the story hinges on is the emergence of a new Celestial, a giant cosmic being that functions as a sort of universal deity. Celestials have existed for an incalculable amount of time and have been quietly working in the background to dictate the formation of various planets and the population of sentient beings. The Eternals themselves were created by a Celestial named Arishem who has tasked them with their mission to fight off the Deviants.

Of course, it's not actually that simple. While the Celestials themselves don't have an evil (or altruistic) agenda, their deeply neutral stance means they see no problem with the wholesale destruction of planets--especially when those planets are being used as eggs to gestate new Celestials into existence. This is the actual conflict of the movie: the Eternals learning that they must defy Arishem's wishes and stop the birth of Tiamat, a new Celestial, whose emergence would destroy Earth entirely.

It will come as no surprise that the Eternals are eventually able to stop Tiamat from being "born," thanks to some crafty teamwork and despite the betrayal of two of their own--Ikarus and Sprite--though doing so obviously provokes the ire of Arishem. This is where we leave things on Earth, with Tiamat dead (and transformed into a cool new glacial feature out in the ocean), Ikarus also dead (after flying into the sun, like his namesake), Sprite transformed into a human so she can grow up, and the remaining Eternals scattered to the wind. Sersei, Kingo, and Phastos remain on Earth while Thena, Druig, and Makkari take to space in their recently repaired ship.

It would seem that all's well that ends well--at least, until Arishem comes calling. He's not very happy about the Eternals going rogue and, being a cosmic entity with near limitless power, is able to simply reach down and pluck Sersei off of Earth's surface while she's mid-conversation, bringing her to space and forcing her to make a case for herself and her actions--but more on this in a second. First, we have to check in with the other group of Eternals, the ones traveling in space.

The Mid-Credits Scene

Our first stinger was largely already spoiled thanks to some early reactions on Twitter, but it features Thena, Druig, and Makkari as they travel through space toward destinations unknown on a quest for the other Eternals the Celestials may have made and placed on distant planets.

They're interrupted before they can get very far, however, by what looks like the light and energy of the Bifrost, teleporting someone directly into their craft.

This stranger is heralded at first by Pip the Troll, voiced by Patton Oswald, who complains about teleporting after drinking and then announces the real star of the show: Eros, brother of Thanos, AKA Starfox--played by Harry Styles. It's not clear exactly what he wants with the Eternals or why he sought them out--he only briefly gets to introduce himself and make some implications toward a bigger mission before the scene ends.

It's equally unclear exactly how Eros will be portrayed in the MCU. Pip introduces him as the brother of Thanos so that much is holding true from the comics, but given how dramatically the movie shifted the origin story of the Eternals themselves (they're actually robotic organisms now, rather than genetic off-shoots from humans) , anything else is very hard to guess. It's also difficult to tell how his powers and abilities, like emotional manipulation, will manifest.

It's also worth noting that in the comics, Pip the Troll has a connection to Adam Warlock who was recently cast in the MCU for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so it might be best to expect Eros, Pip, and this particular group of Eternals to crop up in that movie next.

The Post-Credits

We return to Earth for the second stinger, which focuses on poor Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington) who, honestly, didn't have very much to do for the movie itself. And to add insult to injury, he was right in the middle of trying to tell Sersei something important about both himself and his family before she was snatched away by Arishem.

This has left him with a big choice, apparently, because we join him here in a moment of conflict, pacing around near a long, ornate box. When he flips it open, we see a large medieval-looking sword that he's hesitant to touch.

Though Dane had very little to do during the movie itself, fans of Marvel comics will recognize his name--and the handful of nods made to his complicated "family legacy"--as hints towards his identity as the Black Knight, a C-list Marvel hero and/or anti-hero, depending on who you're talking to. In terms of abilities, he's just as medieval as he sounds with his powers stemming from the sword--the Ebony Blade--along with a whole roster of high fantasy skills like horseback riding and knowing a lot about magic.

what is the eternals end credits

And speaking of the Ebony Blade, the reason he's so hesitant to touch it is because it's got a bit of a One Ring thing going on. The sword grants all kinds of strength but simultaneously feeds off the negative emotions of a person, slowly driving them to madness. Oh, and the sword has some connections to Venom--or at least Venom's ancestor, Knull, an eldritch being who created the symbiotes--but it's unclear whether the MCU will go this route or not.

Also worth noting, the voice that interrupts Dane at the end of the movie? Apparently it's Mahershala Ali as Blade , making this our first ever tease as to Blade's place in the MCU following his announcement back at SDCC 2019. But obviously we won't know more about this for a while, probably, or at least until Spider-Man: No Way Home gives us more Phase 4 clues.

Eternals is in theaters now.

The epic Marvel film Eternals is arguably the most ambitious film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet.

Directed by Nomadland helmer Chloe Zhao, the film follows a group of super-powered immortal beings who appear on Earth in ancient times with a mission to protect humanity from the vicious creatures known as the Deviants.

However, in modern times, these beings known as the Eternals discover that all is not clear about their mission and what their masters - the Celestials - want from them.

The Eternals cast are played by the likes of Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Kumail Nanjiani, and Brian Tyree Henry.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com , Chloe Zhao revealed the connection to the rest of the MCU by saying: "The story is triggered when half the Earth’s population is brought back in Avengers: Endgame. The return of half of the planet is a big ecological event and there are consequences."

Eternals end credits scenes explained

How many eternals end credits scenes are there.

Marvel Studios' Eternals has two end-credits scenes.

The first scene occurs mid-credits and features the Eternals on board the Domo spaceship meeting a very special new character and his companion.

The second scene focuses on the human Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) as he decides to go to great lengths for his beloved Sersi (Gemma Chan).

Both appear to set up major new stories for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Eternals mid-credits scene: Harry Styles is Eros/Starfox

Harry Styles as Eros

The first end-credits scene catches up with Druig (Barry Keoghan), Makkari (Lauren Ridfloff) and Thena (Angelina Jolie) on the Eternals’ ship The Domo, which they set off on at the end of the film to tell other Eternals about what they’d discovered (i.e. they were all helping hatch baby Celestials, not protect planets).

However, after no contact from Earth for some time, they’d realised something was wrong with their fellow Eternals. Deducing correctly that their Celestial boss Arishem (David Kaye) had abducted Sersi, Sprite, Kingo and Phastos after they foiled his plans, they opt to “go back” – until they’re surprised by the arrival of an unfamiliar face.

Specifically, it’s the face of Pip the Troll, there to herald the arrival of his master Eros, described as the “Royal Prince of Titan,” “Starfox of mystery planet” and “brother of Thanos” among other things.

Arishem in Eternals

To us, though, he’ll always be known as Harry Styles, whose surprise arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was leaked from early press screenings.

Anyway, he’s here to help the Eternals. “Pip and I are here to help,” he tells the stunned trio of Eternals. “Your friends are in big trouble. And we know where to find them.”

Eros has quite a long history in the comics, which you can read about here , but in this context, it looks very much like he’s there to set up an Eternals sequel – or at least tease some more MCU appearances for Styles himself.

After all, Eros has a history (often romantic) with plenty of Marvel heroes and even joined the Avengers in the comics, so there are plenty of places he could pop up going forward.

The second tease follows Sersi’s (Gemma Chan) human boyfriend Dane Whitman, who’s also responding to her sudden abduction by Arishem.

In his office, we see Dane psyching himself up to open a mysterious box, emblazoned with his family crest.

“You can do this…you can do this,” he tells himself, before cracking it open to reveal a wrapped-up sword.

But this isn’t just any sword – this particular weapon comes with its own motto (“Death is my reward”) and a habit of whispering nasty little words when it’s gazed open, a bit like the One Ring.

“I’m sorry – I have to try,” Dane says, and reaches for the blade, only to be interrupted by another voice.

“Sure you’re ready for that, Mr Whitman?” an unseen American man says before the scene cuts away to black.

Who is the voice in the Eternals post-credits scene?

Mahershala Ali introduced as Blade at San Diego Comic-Con, Getty

The mystery voice in Eternals' post-credits scene is Mahershala Ali as Blade.

Director Chloe Zhao has since confirmed, surprisingly, that this voice belongs to none other than vampire hunter Blade , whose solo movie (starring double Oscar winner Mahershala Ali) was announced a few years ago (functioning as a reboot to the Wesley Snipes classic).

Zhao told Empire: "I gotta say, in just the little time I spent with Mahershala, I can't wait for the Blade movie to come out. It's gonna be epic."

Apart from a love of... blades ... it's unclear what Blade's interest is here, though in the comics he and Dane are part of a superhero team called MI: 13.

More explicitly, this scene sets up Dane’s transformation into his comic-book alter-ego, The Black Knight, a superhero who has appeared sporadically over the years.

In the comics, Dane is usually the bearer of the Ebony Blade, a family heirloom that deflects magic and protects its wielder from death. Unfortunately, it also corrupts those who hold it into feelings of bloodlust and violence, making it a dangerous weapon for anyone to use for long.

(Notably, the Ebony Blade is name-checked earlier in the film when Thena is playing around with Excalibur – in the comics, both came via the wizard Merlin, but have very different power sets.)

Eternals

Within this context, the second post-credits scene makes a lot more sense. Clearly, Dane intends to try and rescue Sersi by playing the only card he knows, tying himself to the power of the Ebony Blade. He’s nervous because he knows what it could (or will) cost him, but willing to try anyway to save his girlfriend.

Mentions of his difficult uncle (who Sersi encourages him to make up with) are also drawn from the comics, where Whitman’s uncle Nathan Garrett was known as a supervillain also called The Black Knight (he was the first one, in fact).

Presumably, we will see the other shoe drop in a future Marvel movie when Dane becomes the Black Knight, though whether that will be in an Eternals movie or some other project (maybe the Blade movie?) remains to be seen.

Either way, Game of Thrones fans might not be too sorry to see Kit Harington wearing black, wielding a special sword and helping someone kill undead warriors all over again.

Eternals ending explained: your biggest Marvel questions answered

A look at how Eternals' final act changes the MCU moving forward

Eternals

Warning: major spoilers for Eternals follow, including the finale and its post-credits scenes. You have been warned!

The Eternals ending is a cosmic rollercoaster. Lives are lost, various crises are averted, and a certain pair of lovers now have to seriously redefine the term ‘long-distance relationship’.

Not only does the final act of Eternals throw some serious curveballs and cliffhangers our way, it also introduces new characters, new concepts, and new setups for future Marvel stories.

All told, there’s a lot to take in. You probably left the cinema with more questions than answers. But worry not: we’ve pieced together all the head-scratchers and out-of-nowhere moments to bring you the definitive rundown of the Eternals ending: who lives, who dies, and how the millennia-old superheroes are redefining the MCU in front of our very eyes.

Where did Arishem take the Eternals and what will he do now?

Eternals

At the very end of the movie, Arishem appears over Earth and takes a handful of the remaining Eternals – Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos – into space. There he tells them that, while the almighty Celestial will spare the people of Earth, the Eternals' memories will be looked at and they are going to be judged.

What next? Well, they don’t call him Arishem the Judge for nothing. Now the Celestials’ planet-wiping secret is out, Arishem could decide to destroy or reset the memories of the Eternal trio, as has been done before on other post-Emergence worlds. Either way, Arishem has plans for his Eternals – and they’re probably not going to be much fun for any cosmic entities standing in Arishem’s way.

Who is Harry Styles’ Marvel character?

Eternals

Even if you had Harry Styles’ post-credits cameo ruined, you’re (probably) none the wiser regarding who he’s actually playing – despite the grand introduction from Patton Oswalt’s Pip the Troll.

Sign up to the GamesRadar+ Newsletter

Weekly digests, tales from the communities you love, and more

Styles plays the brother of Thanos, Eros , who also goes by the superhero name Starfox. His main power involves being able to control people’s emotions – something that has given the character a decidedly murky past in Marvel’s comics.

It’s not yet known whether he’s on the side of good or evil in the MCU. It’s likely he’ll factor into any Eternals sequel, guiding the Eternals on the spaceship – that's Druig, Thena, and Makkari – towards Arishem’s location to potentially save their friends. But his motives are still unclear. After all, anyone who’s related to Thanos – and with the power to control minds – probably can’t be trusted.

What is Dane’s family history?

Eternals

During the Eternals ending, Dane Whitman and Sersi are seen walking around Hampstead Heath, London. There, Kit Harington’s teacher mentions he has a secret: some “family history” that he’s been looking into.

That history is seen directly in the film’s second post-credits scene. Whitman unravels a family sword that has the words “Death is my reward” engraved on its case.

That sword, if the MCU is to follow the same path as the comics, is the Ebony Blade, a weapon that can cut through any object and can make its wielder essentially invincible. It once belonged to Dane’s uncle, Nathan Garrett, who had been the villainous Black Knight .

It remains to be seen whether Dane will take up that mantle – or fight for good – but a certain someone warns him during the post-credits…

Who was the off-screen voice in the post-credits?

Eternals

“Are you sure you’re ready for this, Mr. Whitman?” asks an off-screen voice. Who is it? And why is he suddenly appearing at what is probably Dane’s ancestral home?

That was, as confirmed by director Chloé Zhao, the voice of Mahershala Ali's Blade. "That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself," she told Fandom . "Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah!”

Unfortunately, she was unable to give away any specifics about the character's upcoming solo movie, saying: "I don’t know what they’re doing with the movie, but Mahershala is a treasure. It’s going to be epic."

Harington also spoke about the introduction of Blade into the MCU: "It’s really cool. [Chloé] texted me about that a couple of weeks ago and it sort of blew my mind. I didn’t know that that would be the case, so it’s pretty exciting for me."

What is the Emergence?

Eternals

Short answer? It’s not good news for planet Earth (or any planet, for that matter). Arishem explains to Sersi that the Eternals – secretly robot-like constructs – are tasked with protecting Celestial seeds, embedded within each planet, from the Deviants attack.

When there’s enough life on the planet, those seeds feed off that planet’s energy to create a new Celestial – a process known as the Emergence. In theory, that Celestial will then give birth to suns, creating a new series of planets and galaxies. As Arishem puts it, the infinite loop of creation and destruction goes on.

In Eternals, the imminent Emergence would destroy Earth (the earthquake in the opening act was just a taster of things to come) – and it’s something that most of the Eternals eventually want to stop.

How was the Emergence stopped?

Eternals

The Emergence, now that Earth’s population hit a set number, seemed irreversible. Thankfully, the Eternals just managed to save the day. That was achieved through a combination of Phastos’ Uni-Mind device and Sersi’s ‘tree’ powers – first glimpsed in the Amazon. Together, the Eternals turned Tiamut the Celestial into crystal as he emerged from his resting place. As evidenced by a news report after the event, he still remains there and is likely dead or dormant – though the general public aren’t aware of the reasons why.

What is the Uni-Mind?

Eternals

Phastos’ trademark ability is being able to invent and create new technologies. Early on in Earth’s timeline, he wanted to introduce both the engine and the plough. In the present-day, he puts together the Uni-Mind, a device constructed from Sersi’s sphere to help connect all the Eternals and combine their energy. Think of it as an interminable ‘put your heads together’ meeting or an Uber Pool that saves the world and you’re on the right track.

Using the Uni-Mind, the Eternals were able to come together. At first, they were going to use Druig’s mind control power to nullify the Eternal. After Ikaris and Sprite’s attack, Sersi had to use the Uni-Mind’s stored energy to help strengthen her own ability to alter matter and she then crystalises Tiamut.

Why did Ikaris betray the Eternals?

Eternals

A flashback to South Dakota reveals that Ikaris has known – since the Babylonian days – of Arishem’s plan to continue using the Eternals as pawns to ensure each Emergence went ahead as planned.

Knowing that Ajak, and others, wouldn’t go along with that grand design, Ikaris pushed the Prime Eternal into a sheet of ice with the planet’s last remaining Deviants. They killed her – all so Ikaris could cover it up and rally the other Eternals to kill the Deviants in revenge. That’s because the Deviants (and their defacto leader, Kro) want to stop the Emergence; Ikaris was content with letting the destructive cycle continue.

Who lived and who died?

Eternals

From the Eternals, Gilgamesh (killed by Kro in the Amazon rainforest) and Ajak (killed by Deviants) are definitely dead. Ikaris’ fate is a little more up in the air, if you’ll excuse the pun. He flew into the sun after apologizing to Sersi and is presumed dead. The door is very much open for him to come back, however, if Kevin Feige and the powers-that-be dictate it.

As revenge for Gilgamesh’s death, Thena killed Kro. The only other major change in status by the movie’s end was that of Sprite, who wanted to live as a ‘real’ human. Conveniently enough, Sersi had another leftover energy from the Uni-Mind to make that wish come true.

What was Kro’s plan?

Eternals

If you believed some of the early merchandising leaks, you would have expected the Deviant leader Kro to be a pretty typical Marvel villain. It wasn’t quite that black-and-white. While he did kill Gilgamesh in the Amazon as a result of some seriously crossed wires – Deviants and Eternals just needed to sit down and talk, clearly – Kro actually has the same end goal as the reformed Eternals: stop the Emergence.

If the Emergence happens, the Deviants die. It’s a no-brainer as to why they wanted to stop it. It also made sense for Arishem to paint them as the bad guys to help his ultimate narrative and simultaneously keep the Eternals out of the loop. Eternals were conditioned to think of Deviants as evil when, in actual fact, they were there to help the greater good.

Did Thanos nearly save the world?

Thanos

Kinda. Stick with us here. As revealed by Ajak, ironically, by wiping out half of the universe’s population, Thanos slowed down the Emergence. When Hulk snapped everyone back in Avengers: Endgame , he helped speed up the Emergence process once more. With half of all life on the planet restored, the Emergence was able to start in earnest.

Not to defend the Mad Titan here, but his actions would have resulted in Earth being saved from the effects of the Emergence. Maybe he was onto something about the whole balance thing…

Have we seen the Celestials before in the MCU?

A Celestial in Guardians of the Galaxy

There’s a reason why the likes of Arishem look so familiar. The god-like Celestials were introduced as early as Guardians of the Galaxy in an exposition-laden sequence from the Collector on the power of the Infinity Stones. Some Celestials wielded a Stone that granted them enormous power, with one even shown destroying an entire planet with the Power Stone.

Then, in Guardians 2, it was revealed one of the Celestials was still around: Kurt Russell’s Ego. If you’re keeping track, that also makes Star-Lord half-Celestial.

Who is Tiamut?

Eternals

Tiamut was the Celestial waiting to be ‘born’ and fully powered up so he could emerge from under the Earth and create a new sun.

In the comics, Tiamut is known as the ‘Dreaming Celestial’, an all-powerful entity that was put in a million-year deep sleep after attacking Arishem.

Eternals doesn’t introduce a new superhero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe — it introduces 10 of them.

Helmed by Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao , the film centers on its titular team of ultra-powerful beings, who have secretly protected Earth for thousands of years (yes, even when the whole Thanos situation went down). After drifting apart, they’re forced to join forces once again when their ancient foes, the Deviants, return. Eternals’ all-star cast includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, and many more familiar faces.

If you’d rather read up on Eternals spoilers before checking out the movie on Disney+ — or if you saw the movie and walked away confused — check out Decider’s Eternals plot summary, as well as the Eternals ending explained, below. Wondering how  Eternals ends? Or maybe you’re just wondering, when does Harry Styles show up in  Eternals ? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE ETERNALS PLOT? ETERNALS PLOT SUMMARY:

Just like another recent Marvel release, Shang-Chi , Zhao’s film opens thousands of years ago — more specifically, in the year 5,000 BC as the godlike Celestial Arishem sends the 10 Eternals to defeat the Deviants (aka muddy, robot-looking monsters). Once that’s taken care of, they live largely separate lives for 500 years, awaiting Arishem’s return.

In the present day, powerful Eternal Sersi’s new life with human boyfriend Dan (Kit Harington) is upended when (gasp!) the Deviants suddenly return. So she and fellow Eternals Sprite (Lia McHugh) and Ikaris (Richard Madden, playing Sersi’s ex-lover) decide to convene with Eternals leader Ajak (Salma Hayek), only to find that she’s been murdered by the Deviant Kro (Bill Skarsgård).

Things take a turn when Arishem admits to Sersi that the Eternals weren’t actually sent to Earth to protect it. Instead, they were sent to prepare the planet for the “Emergence” (aka the birth of a new Celstial called Tiamut), which will wipe out all life on Earth.

Horrified, Sersi and her friends set out to reunite the rest of the Eternals and save humanity from the Emergence. But guess what? There’s another big twist: Ikaris reveals that Ajak warned him about the Emergence six days earlier, but he chose to side with Arishem and is her real murderer. After Sprite joins Ikaris due to her unrequited love for him, the rest of the Eternals are left to fight against them.

HOW DOES ETERNALS END? ETERNALS ENDING EXPLAINED:

Ikraris ultimately surrenders due to his love for Sersi, allowing her to vanquish Tiamut. Filled with guilt, Ikaris flies directly into the sun. Sersi decides to turn Sprite into a human, which gives her the chance to finally grow out of her perpetual childlike appearance. Meanwhile, Eternals team members Thena (Angelina Jolie), Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) set off in search of other Eternals spread across the galaxy.

The film ends on a cliffhanger, as Arishem drags Sersi and her fellow Eternals Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) and Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) into space. He agrees to spare humanity by combing through the Eternals’ memories and deciding for himself whether or not humans deserve to exist.

ETERNALS END CREDITS SCENES EXPLAINED: WHEN DOES HARRY STYLES SHOW UP IN  ETERNALS ?

During Eternals ‘ mid-credits scene, Thena, Druig, and Makkari encounter Thanos’ brother, Eros (Mr. “Watermelon Sugar” himself, Harry Styles ). He and his assistant Pip the Troll (Patton Oswalt) offer to help the gang out with their Eternals search.

And don’t worry, Sersi’s irrelevant human boyfriend is about to get way more relevant! In the film’s post-credits scene, Dan opens an old chest from his ancestors containing an ominous-looking sword. “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?” a mysterious voice asks.

That voice belongs to Blade the Vampire Hunter, who’s set to be played by Mahershala Ali. With Blade and Eros joining the mix, the MCU is about to get bigger than ever before!

The ending of Marvel’s Eternals requires some explanation

That’s certainly one way to set up an Eternals 2

Share All sharing options for: The ending of Marvel’s Eternals requires some explanation

LtR: Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Gemma Chan as Sersi, and Lia McHugh as Sprite in Eternals (2021).

Eternals is a strange installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe . It’s based on obscure characters with one of the weirdest backstories in comics, and features a race of creator gods who look like massive bulky robot toys .

So in some ways, it makes sense that Eternals would have maybe the weirdest ending of any Marvel movie yet — it’s got a post-credits scene for a final scene, and a clear path toward an Eternals 2 (or maybe even a bigger Avengers 5 -ish crossover event). Even still, the ending to the film might leave even the biggest MCU fans scratching their heads. Here’s how to begin to parse out what happened at the end of the Eternals , based on the movie continuity and a bit of comics lore.

[ Ed. note : This post contains spoilers for Eternals .]

What happens at the end of Eternals?

Sersi (Gemma Chan) in Eternals.

The final scenes of Eternals play out as usual for an ensemble blockbuster. The big threat (the birth of Tiamut and the destruction of Earth) has been avoided, and our heroes are left to sort out the effects of that battle on their relationships.

In self-imposed penance for turning against Arishem, Ikaris hurls himself into the sun. Kingo, who sat out the final battle, adopts Sprite — who is now just a mortal human kid with the memories of an Eternal and has to attend normal human school with a normal human cellphone. And Sersi goes on a walk in the park with her normal human boyfriend, Dane Whitman.

Dane is just about to drop some shocking news on Sersi about his own dark secret when all of a sudden things stop being so happily ever after.

The Celestial Arishem towers in the void of space in Marvel’s Eternals.

Arishem, the Eternals’ robot dad, scoops Sersi and several other characters out into space with him — some who participated in killing Tiamut, and some who didn’t, like Kingo and Sprite. They were all very naughty, and they are so, so grounded. Arishem is taking them away for a while, but says that he will return to Earth at some point in the future, to judge whether or not they were right, and if humanity’s potential was truly worth more than the potential of the worlds and galaxies Tiamut might have created.

And then the movie ends.

But what does that mean for Eternals 2?

Evaluating the potential worth or ethical mettle of an entire planet of sentients is among the things that Celestials are most known for in Marvel Comics. In a way, the ending of Eternals is more like how most Marvel Comics superheroes first encounter Celestials: As humongous and ineffable cosmic judges.

One of Eternals ’ post credits scenes further indicates that the next time we see the Eternals, they’ll be concerned with whatever Arishem has planned, as Druig, Thena, and Makkari meet a couple of unusual allies who say they can help them locate their missing friends. That could be in a sequel to Eternals , or it could potentially be something more.

After all, what’s a bigger threat than Thanos, the outcast Eternal ? Well, there’s always the nigh-omnipotent Celestials who created the Eternals in the first place. And certainly Marvel writers have found ways to bring the superheroic universe together with the more cosmic elements over the years.

5 questions about Eternals — and what its ending means for the MCU

Will the Avengers and Eternals ever meet up and be friends?

by Alex Abad-Santos

It’s a Celestial!!!

While I’m not sure if Eternals is the best Marvel movie in the studio’s history, I think it is one of the strangest. It may also be the most ambitious. Chloe Zhao’s superhero foray purposely shakes up everything we — Marvel fans, the Marvel-curious, or maybe the people who haven’t tuned in since Endgame — thought we knew about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Eternals have been on earth since the beginning of time! They’re cosmic entities who created human civilization! They’re also horny but not good at sex scenes! And they may or may not be responsible for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima!

A movie as sweeping and weird and as Marvel as this may have left you with some questions about the Eternals, the galaxies they’re supposed to be creating, or their relative culpability for history’s great disasters. If so, you’ve come to the right place. I have them too.

Here are some possible answers to the biggest questions you might still have about Eternals after watching it. And if you haven’t seen the movie yet, needless to say, spoilers follow!

Where were the Avengers?

In Eternals , the eponymous superhero group saves us from their own creators, the Celestials, stopping the end of the world by minutes, if not seconds. Sersi (Gemma Chan) halts the Celestial named Tiamut from hatching by turning him to stone, and reverses what seems a for-sure-cataclysmic apocalypse. Before that, Deviants — the villainous animal-like beings — pop up and start wrecking London and a global earthquake happens. The attacks and earthquake make worldwide news, so one would think this international event would, for sure, be observed by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Right?

Yet, none of them come to the rescue.

Doctor Strange , who is allegedly monitoring Earth for threats? Silent. Okoye, who’s in technologically advanced Wakanda and was part of Black Widow’s global observation team in Endgame ? Nowhere to be found. Captain Marvel, who also reported to Nat in Endgame , does not make an appearance either. Neither do Ant-Man nor the newest Avenger, Shang-Chi.

Eternals provides no explanation as to why not a single Avenger is at least curious about how close we were to the end of Earth. The only reasoning that fits in with the story that Marvel previously constructed (i.e., that there’s always an Avenger or two monitoring what’s happening on Earth) is that we’ll eventually find out that they’re off on another adventure.

Maybe Doctor Strange is stuck repairing the multiverse, Captain Marvel is off in space, Ant-Man is doing something with the Quantum Realm, Okoye has her hands tied in Wakanda, and Shang-Chi isn’t fully part of the team yet? After all, the last time we saw Nick Fury, he was in space taking a vacation. Perhaps this is what gets the team back together.

Will the Eternals ever meet the Avengers?

It doesn’t seem like it’ll happen soon.

The mid-credits scene for Eternals contains a big clue. Eros a.k.a. Starfox (Harry Styles) is introduced into the fold, and basically tells the existing team that they’ll need his help to confront Arishem, the Celestials’ leader, and get their kidnapped friends back. That basically sets up a sequel in which the Eternals go up against Arishem, right? And since the Avengers didn’t intervene in the movie, they currently have no business with the Eternals or Arishem.

But there are a couple of tidbits that are a bit curious. The first is Dane Whitman (Kit Harington); Dane, in the final credits scene , is about to touch a magical sword and become the superhero known in the comic books as the Black Knight. Before he touches the sword, Blade’s disembodied voice (Mahershala Ali) tells him to stop. Hence, there could be a story in which Dane joins Blade or the Eternals to rescue Sersi, which sets up an Avengers and Eternals meetup.

  • The big reveals in Eternals’ two post-credits scenes

But there’s more: In Eternals , Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) creates rings that allow the ancient heroes to absorb cosmic power. These rings are very, very similar to the Ten Rings that Shang-Chi possesses. As established in one of Shang-Chi ’s post-credits scenes, Shang-Chi’s rings are of unknown origin: Wong, Captain Marvel, and Bruce Banner analyze them and the only thing they can surmise is that the rings are very old, very powerful, and have a beacon attached to them. It doesn’t seem like a coincidence that the very old and very powerful Eternals now have rings that seem to be emitting a signal.

Did the Black, gay Eternal really invent the atom bomb?

So prior to the movie’s release, following a few initial screenings, whispers about its plot started coming out. In particular, there was a fair amount of talk about the movie’s flashback to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. It was described, somewhat disingenuously, as “Phastos did Hiroshima.”

That’s not quite what happens. But people were confused, maybe even tickled, at the sheer absurdity of that prospect.

Phastos feels bad about the bomb, guys.

In the film, there is a flashback scene to the bombing of Hiroshima. Phastos and Ajak (Salma Hayek) are in the Japanese city, grieving over the bombing. The mushroom cloud looms in the sky. Phastos’s power is invention, and he feels like his help in the past pushed humanity toward this. Ajak assures him it didn’t, but that doesn’t stop him from grieving.

Granted, the optics of making these two Eternals feel and maybe even be tangentially responsible for the American government’s bombing of Hiroshima is a choice. It could be interpreted as these two fictional beings — played by people of color — having responsibility for the mass death perpetrated by a predominantly white government at the end of World War II. That’s part of the reason everyone defaulted to absurdity when they read about the scene.

But it seems like what director Chloe Zhao was getting at in this scene, and which the movie plays with constantly, are the ideas of colonialism and isolationism. The Eternals were sent to Earth to help cultivate humanity and rid the planet of Deviants at the same time. They set technological advancements, civilizations, medicine, arts, and everything in between into motion. But they also are told not to intervene and to let humans sort out their differences, no matter how gruesome or horrific — e.g., slavery, American Indian genocide, the Holocaust, WWI, etc. Those decisions weigh on their eternal souls.

Your mileage may vary on how well you think Zhao executed this. There were definitely some clunky, gummy parts. When I first saw the movie, I interpreted the Hiroshima scene as Phastos coming to terms with that isolationism and how he set humanity on a path that eventually led to an atomic bomb being detonated, rather than “Phastos did Hiroshima.”

I don’t believe the movie really wants you to think their isolationism is a good thing. They fail to realize that conflicts and violence may be something humans learned from watching the Eternals hunt down Deviants. The Eternals could’ve stopped such atrocities and they didn’t. Also, their long game hinges on the complete destruction of Earth. They’re not supposed to be inherently good beings.

The main crux of the movie is that the “good” Eternals have a change of heart and realize humanity is worth saving, but how each one comes to that conclusion isn’t tidy either. Ajak is more altruistic and is inspired by how the humans and Avengers fought Thanos. Sersi and Phastos are swayed in large part because they fall in love with humans.

When it comes to Phastos, that 1945 flashback is important because that’s when he loses all faith in humanity. He’s fine with abandoning humans forever. That faith is only restored by his husband and their son.

How do Eternals and its villains, the Celestials, change the MCU?

Since Endgame , Marvel storytelling has been pushing around the idea of alternate dimensions as the studio’s new big adventure. In WandaVision , Wanda Maximoff shows that, among other things, she can warp reality itself. In Loki , it was revealed that alternate timelines do exist and that the organization in charge of them has lost all control. The upcoming Spider-Man movie, No Way Home (a collaboration between Sony and Marvel) is allegedly going to introduce some dimension-jumping heroes and villains .

So, it seems like this giant, swirling, maybe-confusing multiverse is here to stay. The bigger mindfuck is that The Eternals introduces a concept to layer on top of that: There are all-powerful cosmic beings called Celestials, and they’re constantly creating new universes.

The Eternals have cute outfits!

For fans, that means there’s not only the possibility of alternate dimensions and parallel timelines, but there could be whole unidentified and maybe not-yet-created universes throughout the MCU, all with their own different timelines and dimensions. We could be headed down an endless rabbit hole of possibilities but, it’s ultimately Marvel’s call.

An immediate effect — already in progress — will likely be more of a distinction between Avengers who take on these big cosmic adventures (e.g., Captain Marvel, Thor, Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy) and Avengers who are more street-level (e.g., Hawkeye, Black Widow, and the upcoming She-Hulk) and handle terrestrial business. We saw the beginnings of this with the debut of Marvel’s Disney+ shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the ending of Black Widow. The split might be inevitable given how big the MCU feels like it’s going to get.

What this also means for the MCU is probably the introduction of some cosmic villains for the Guardians of the Galaxy or Captain Marvel to take on. It all but sets up an introduction of the famed comic book villain Galactus, who literally eats planets. Galactus has run into the Avengers and Fantastic Four more than a few times (and the latter group has a movie in the works). SWORD, which was hinted at in a Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credits scene and referenced in WandaVision , is an observation agency that deals with space threats and should factor more and more into the future of the MCU too.

So how was that sex scene so not sexy?

Beauty ≠ sexy!!

I am not here to bury the Eternals sex scene nor am I here to exalt it. The only thing I can say is that the rules of sex scenes are not simple nor are they finite, and even a scene involving Richard Madden and Gemma Chan on a beach can go wrong.

Two regular-looking people could film the steamiest scene in cinematic existence. Two beautiful people could film the most flaccid sex scene known to man. I do not make the rules!

The Eternals Post-Credits Scene Explained: What's Next for Kit Harington's Dane Whitman?

What is the future of the black knight, and who is that mysterious voice.

Marvel's Eternals introduces a number of new heroes and villains to the MCU, as fans get to meet the ancient heroes who have defended humanity for thousands of years. But Eternals also introduces a long-standing Avenger: Game of Thrones star Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman , better known as the sword-wielding superhero Black Knight in the comics.

While Dane never actually suits up as Black Knight in this movie, that transformation is only a matter of time. What's next for Harington's character, and who the heck is the person speaking to him in that cryptic final scene? Let's explore Black Knight's comic book background and how that could inform his MCU future.

Marvel's Eternals: How Many End Credits Scenes Are There?

Before diving into that background, though, let's address one of the big questions MCU fans always have about new movies. Like so many MCU films, Eternals has two extra sequences - a mid-credits scene and a post-credits scene. It's the latter of those two that concerns Mr. Whitman, but be sure to check out IGN's full breakdown of Eternals' mid-credits scene .

Warning: The rest of this article contains major spoilers for Marvel's Eternals!

Black Knight: The Basics

There have been several heroes and villains to carry the mantle of Black Knight, but Dane Whitman is easily the most enduring and popular of them all. Dane wields a mystical sword called the Ebony Blade and carries on the heroic legacy of his ancestor, Sir Percy of Scandia. He's been a valuable member of many superhero teams, including the Avengers, Defenders, Heroes for Hire and Ultraforce. He's even formed a romantic bond with Sersi, creating lasting ties to The Eternals.

Dane is often tormented by inner darkness. His enchanted sword also carries a blood curse that threatens to drive the user mad. But through it all, Dane has repeatedly proven himself as one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Dane is often tormented by inner darkness. His enchanted sword also carries a blood curse that threatens to drive the user mad.

Black knight: powers and abilities.

On his own, Dane Whitman has no superhuman powers to speak of, though he is among the best swordsmen in the Marvel Universe and happens to be a brilliant physicist. But after bonding with Sersi through a ritual know as "Gann Josin," Dane temporarily gained enhanced strength, speed and durability. He also later gained the ability to see through magical illusions.

what is the eternals end credits

Most of Black Knight's powers come from his weapons. The mystical Ebony Blade was forged by Merlin himself and can cut through nearly any substance in the universe, magical or otherwise. The Ebony Blade can also absorb energy and be summoned from afar like Mjolnir. This sword has a serious downside, however. It's infected with a blood curse, meaning that the more blood it spills, the more it drives its owner insane. Dane has sometimes compensated by replacing the Ebony Blade with other weapons, including the Sword of Light and Shield of Night.

Black Knight can often be seen riding a winged steed named Aragorn into battle.

Black Knight: Origin and Background

Dane Whitman is one of many incarnations of Black Knight introduced over the years. The original Black Knight predates even heroes like Spider-Man and the Avengers. This version, Sir Percy of Scandia, was an actual knight of Camelot who battled Mordred the Evil after the death of King Arthur.

The original Black Knight fought in defense of Camelot, despite it only being a model.

In modern times, Sir Percy's descendant Nathan Garrett inherited the Ebony Blade and became the second Black Knight. This Black Knight became a villain, battling the Avengers before repenting and passing the sword on to his nephew, Dane Whitman. And though several other characters have taken up the Black Knight mantle since, Dane has remained the most popular and enduring version.

Initially mistaken for a villain (thanks to his nefarious uncle), Dane managed to prove himself to the Avengers by infiltrating the Masters of Evil and then saving the team during a conflict with the Grandmaster and Kang the Conqueror . He quickly became a valuable member of the Avengers, playing a key role in the seminal storyline Avengers: Under Siege. He even temporarily became the team's leader. This is also where Dane struck up a romance with Sersi, who took a break from the Eternals to fight alongside the Avengers.

Black Knight and Blade have served on the same team before.

Dane is also a member of another major Marvel team known as the MI:13. As the name suggests, the MI:13 is a top-secret British intelligence agency that forms its own Avengers-like team in response to a Skrull invasion of Earth. Dane’s MI:13 allies include Captain Britain, Union Jack and even the vampire hunter Blade. More on him in a minute.

Throughout his time with the Avengers and other teams, Dane has often become a victim of forces larger than himself. He discovered the Ebony Blade has a blood curse that threatens to drive him insane. He's often become unstuck in time and transported back to the 12th Century. He and Sersi have even battled his evil doppelganger Proctor and become stranded in the alternate universe known as the Ultraverse. The status quo is always changing for Dane Whitman, but one thing always remains constant - he's one of Earth's most valiant heroes.

Eternals End Credits: Who Is That Voice?

Black Knight doesn't have an extensive history outside of Marvel's comics. He appeared in a non-speaking role in an episode of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. He's also appeared as a playable character in games like Marvel Avengers Alliance, LEGO Marvel's Avengers and the arcade game Avengers in Galactic Storm. But thanks to Marvel's Eternals, he's finally made his live-action debut.

Dane is ultimately more a supporting character in the film, and we never actually see him suit up as Black Knight. However, a post-credits scene does confirm that transformation is on the way. When we last see Dane, he’s approaching the Ebony Blade, only to be interrupted by an unseen voice in the room. That voice is none other than Mahershala Ali’s Blade.

After Eternals: Black Knight and Blade's MCU Future

What does Blade want with the future Black Knight? As we’ve already established, the two characters do have a shared connection in the comics in the form of the MI:13 organization. This could be Marvel’s first step toward establishing that team in the MCU.

Given that Blade himself is pretty handy with a sword, he may be taking on the role of mentor to Dane. If we’ve learned anything about Blade over the years, it’s that he has little love for supernatural parasites that prey on the lifeforce of mortals.

Ali has signed on to star in the Blade reboot , which could mean Harington will play a supporting role alongside him. And from there, who knows? There could be an MI:13 movie in the works, or even a Black Knight series on Disney+. For a guy like Dane Knight, nothing is impossible.

A recent Marvel film has been added to Disney Plus.

Eternals , which was released in November, introduces a new set of characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU ) – a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years.

Leading the cast are Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Lauren Ridloff, Kumail Nanjiani, Barry Keoghan and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is directed by  Nomadland ’s Chloé Zhao.

Naturally, spoilers abound, so don’t read unless you’ve seen the film or don’t mind knowing what happens.

What happens in the mid-credits scene?

  • Eternals review: Nomadland director Chloé Zhao meets far too much CGI in a battle for Marvel’s soul
  • Why on earth did Chloé Zhao get involved with Marvel?
  • Eternals makes history as lowest-scoring Marvel Cinematic Universe film to date on Rotten Tomatoes

The first tease comes midway through the credits with a scene featuring Thena (Jolie), Makkari (Ridloff) and Druig (Keoghan), who have no idea where their fellow Eternals have “disappeared” to.

During a discussion, they are surprised by the arrival of two new characters – Pip the Troll (voiced by Patton Oswald) and Starfox, who is also known as Eros AKA the brother of Thanos. He is played by Harry Styles .

Eros explains that he knows where Sersi (Chan), Kingo (Nanjiani) and Phastos (Tyree Henry) thanks to a yellow sphere used to communicate with Arishem, the leader of the Eternals who whisked them away at the end of the film.

So, who is Eros? Unlike his brother Thanos, Styles’ character is a force for peace within the Marvel universe and, in the comics, has regularly worked alongside the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.

There’s a possible link to a future Marvel film, too –  Digital Spy notes that Pip the Troll is the companyAdam Warlock, the villain who’ll be played by Will Poulter in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 .

Following reports that Styles has signed a “five-movie” deal with Marvel, it certainly seems like he’ll be showing up in other non-Eternals films and not just its sequel, which is seemingly confirmed at the end of the film.

Fan excitement is, naturally, in overdrive .

What happens in the post-credits scene?

For those thinking Kit Harington ’s Dane Whitman is a human with no superpowers, think again. After teasing his “complicated” family history with Sersi near the end of the film, the final scene catches up with Dane .

In the scene, which occurs after the credits have rolled, he opens a box containing a sword. As he reaches out his hand to touch it, an off-screen voice asks: “suRE YOU’re ready for that, Mr Whitman?”

While the film doesn’t reveal who this is, and Marvel seems to be hoping to keep the identity of the character secret, Zhao herself excitedly revealed it is the voice of Blade , played by Mahershala Ali.

“That was the voice of one of my favourite superheroes, Mr Blade himself. Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah!” she told Fandom .

This all but confirms Harington will play a role in the standalone Blade film, which was confirmed in 2019. His character is the nephew of Black Knight, meaning the weapon seen in the post-credits sequence is most likely Ebony Blade, which can potentially drive the one who wields it to madness.

‘Eternals’ Ending Explained: Judgment Day Approaches

eternals-cast

“Eternals” have indeed assembled. Marvel Studios’ latest superhero team the Eternals — immortal creatures from a far-away planet (played with varying degrees of glamour and sophistication by very big movie stars like Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, and Kumail Nanjiani) — have arrived on Disney+. And if you have a question about where they ended up – and why – we’re here to clear things up for you.

Major spoilers for “Eternals” follow.

Story So Far

“Eternals” concerns the story of a group of super-powered, ageless beings who have been sent to Earth to protect humanity from a group of gooey monsters known as Deviants. The story begins 7,000 years ago, with the Eternals saving primitive man from the threat. As the movie progresses, we get flashbacks to them not only saving people but also inspiring and teaching them – to learn, to think for themselves, to dream and desire and create. Throughout history, Eternals and man have been linked, and as the years go on, the two become closer to one another. For the Eternals, what were initially mere orders to protect have instead become genuine concern. They care for mankind.

So, when the Deviants return in modern times, the Eternals spring into action. Long since scattered to the four winds, they look to regroup and suppress this evil. Along the way they realize that the Deviants aren’t as much of a threat as the otherworldly god, named Arishem, who sent them to earth in the first place. (If the Eternals are Charlie’s Angels, then Arishem is Charlie.) It turns out that Arishem has sent them to protect mankind because it benefits him and his race of Celestials – and that a new Celestial will be born soon on Earth. The only downside is that the entire planet will be destroyed when the new god emerges. Some of the Eternals just want to follow Arishem’s orders, while others take a stand and fight against them, stopping the new Celestial from being born and saving all of humanity. Of course, interfering in a cosmic plan does have consequences.

eternals-don-lee-angelina-jolie

Dad Is Angry

At the end of the movie, Druig (Barry Keoghan), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), and Thena (Angelina Jolie) board their ship the Domo to search the galaxy for more Eternals. The rest of the surviving Eternals remain on earth, reentering society and attempting to return to the lives they left behind when the global threat was uncovered. But, as they are, say, walking with a loved one in a posh English park, three of them – Seri (Gemma Chan), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), and Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) – are zapped into space. They are floating, in the middle of a vast sea of stars, in front of Arishem.

Arishem tells them that he is pretty upset that they foiled his plan and allowed for the people of Earth to survive, at the cost of a new Celestial’s life. He says that he will scan their memories (memories are a whole thing in “Eternals”) and if he finds that they are worthy of living, then they will continue to live. But he says that he will return to cast his final judgment and, really, that is pretty scary. This sequence has the kind of cosmic majesty that the movie had teased previously but with a new level of intensity and ominousness. Yes, space is awe-inspiring, But it is also terrifying. And this sequence makes sure that “Eternals” (until its two credits sequences) ends on a unsettling, singularly powerful note.

Where Are They Now?

Here’s the really interesting part of this whole final moment – when we cut back to certain characters during the trademark Marvel Studios end-credits sequences, we don’t see any of the characters appearing before the very mad Celestial. Instead, we see the crew of the Domo and, later, Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman, who is Sersi’s human boyfriend. Where the rest of the Eternals are remains a huge question – are they still in space, waiting for judgement? Did they break free and are elsewhere? Did Arishem move them to some place where they can finally face his wrath?

eternals-kit-harington-gemma-chan

It’s one thing for the movie to end on a cliffhanger and another entirely for it to literally be dangling in zero G. But this is how things are left. And this is how they will be until we meet back up with the “Eternals” in a sequel or some other team-up film. In other words: their fate remains a mystery.

10 MCU Events We Want Deadpool & Wolverine To Revisit That Would Have Change Everything

Secret ryan reynolds message claims deadpool & wolverine won't have a credits scene, deadpool & wolverine clash in new deadpool 3 trailer.

  • Deadpool & Wolverine breaks the tradition of MCU post-credit scenes, with Ryan Reynolds taking aim at their commercial-like nature.
  • The movie includes a QR code that leads to a video where Reynolds pokes fun at the lack of a post-credit scene in a satirical manner.
  • The MCU faces a challenge in delivering on the multitude of teasers set up in post-credit scenes, with pressure mounting to fulfill promises.

While promoting Deadpool & Wolverine , Ryan Reynolds has absolutely nailed the biggest problem with the MCU 's post-credit scene tradition. Deadpool & Wolverine is just two months away from release and is already breaking conventions by selling tickets well in advance of the typical window for blockbuster releases. Yet according to Ryan Reynolds, this isn't the only convention the movie will be breaking as he takes aim at one long-established trope within MCU movies that has since become a staple of comic book movies altogether.

More footage for Deadpool & Wolverine was recently unveiled as part of Disney's ticket sale announcement, which featured an as-yet-unseen clip at the tail-end of the trailer. Additionally, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it QR code has been inserted between Wolverine's legs in the slow-motion shot of Deadpool and Wolverine striding confidently from around a corner at the beginning. This code opens up a YouTube video in which Ryan Reynolds reels off a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer about Deadpool & Wolverine . The full video can be viewed below:

Deadpool and Wolverine will seemingly be revisiting events in the MCU's history in their upcoming adventure, which could change the MCU as it's known.

Ryan Reynolds Calls MCU Credits Scenes "Commercials For Another Movie"

In addition to diminishing the substance of Deadpool & Wolverine , lambasting it as a " vapid dreamland ," Reynolds' disclaimer states that it will not feature the " mandatory " post-credits sequence typical of Marvel movies. He then goes on to call these commercials for movies that will end with commercials for further movies . This is referencing the many cliffhanger post-credits scenes that set up sequels in the MCU, something which began with Iron Man and Nick Fury's recruitment of a special team.

While the QR code leads to a behind-the-scenes shot of Reynolds stating that Deadpool & Wolverine will not feature a post-credits scene, another video released via official channels omits this line and the commentary of post-credits scenes entirely.

The disclaimer video is obviously not to be taken seriously, as is typical of Reynolds' Deadpool promo drives. It does, however, deliver some cutting remarks about the state of the superhero genre - and the characters within them - that are difficult to deny. While the Deadpool & Wolverine post-credits scene has already been all but confirmed to exist by various sources, Reynolds' follow-up statement about these scenes being glorified commercials is not beyond the pale.

Why Ryan Reynolds Is Right About The MCU's Post-Credits Scenes

Of the 56 MCU movie post-credit scenes so far, just 13 comprise scenes that don't tease future installments . These include the drumming ant at the end of Ant-Man and The Wasp , Captain America breaking the fourth wall at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming , and the iconic shawarma scene at the end of The Avengers . With the remaining post-credits scenes teasing future projects with varying degrees of transparency, it is at least plain to see that Reynolds kind of has a point.

In fact, six MCU movies feature post-credit scenes that have been ripped straight from another movie - such as a scene featuring Bucky, Cap, and Falcon from Captain America: Civil War being featured at the end of Ant-Man . Spider-Man: No Way Home , meanwhile, was the latest movie to feature an entire trailer for an upcoming MCU installment in the form of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . While there is arguably a demand for these advertisements, Marvel is now increasingly in danger of failing to deliver on its post-credits promises.

MCU Phase 5's release slate is fully confirmed, leaving a conspicuous gap between certain sequels set up in MCU Phases 3 and 4. Typically, sequels are released in either the same MCU phase or one phase later, which hasn't happened for several recent MCU movies, and the post-credits set-ups are starting to cause significant congestion. The fact that Marvel has ramped up its release schedule in recent years has caused post-credits promises to exponentially increase, putting immense pressure on the Studio as fans now expect new projects featuring characters like Starfox and Black Knight.

Furthermore, Marvel has narratively cornered itself regarding certain story beats, such as a villainous Baron Mordo of Earth-616 appearing in a future Doctor Strange movie, despite Strange now facing multiversal threats.

How Marvel Can Fix Their Post-Credits Scene Problem

With so many future MCU projects teased, the MCU is faced with just one option: to deliver on its promises . While they may not have been officially confirmed or announced, certain projects like Spider-Man 4 and Doctor Strange 3 are more nailed down than others, thanks to the proven profitability of their respective franchises. Things get a little murkier, however, when it comes to paying off the post-credits scene of Eternals , a movie that did not perform as well as hoped at the box office and failed to inspire much of a fanbase for the eponymous heroes.

Thankfully for the MCU, these projects don't all have to happen in MCU Phase 6 . The fact that Disney has recently confirmed that it will be toning down the rapid release schedule to focus on quality over quantity in the wake of a disappointing 2023 is a good thing, and projects such as ones involving Dane Whitman and Starfox aren't necessarily constrained to the Multiverse Saga. Furthermore, there is plenty of room for other upcoming MCU movies and shows to pay off multiple teases, such as Spider-Man 4 addressing Scorpion and the symbiote in one movie.

The post-credits scene of Eternals setting up Black Knight also featured the voice of Blade, suggesting that he may appear in MCU Phase 6's Blade movie.

Deadpool & Wolverine Could Be A Perfect Time To Fix The MCU's Credits Scene Problem

Much like the "secret" behind-the-scenes footage of Reynolds' disclaimer, Deadpool & Wolverine is the best-placed movie to address the backlog of post-credits advertisements directly . The best place to do this, meanwhile, would be in the post-credits scene of Deadpool & Wolverine itself. The Deadpool franchise is no stranger to poking fun at the practice after all, as the post-credits scene of Deadpool saw Deadpool in a gown telling the audience to go home as the movie was over. He did, however, tease the arrival of Cable - which was then delivered on in Deadpool 2 .

Hopefully, this is something that Deadpool & Wolverine will continue. All we know of any possible Deadpool & Wolverine post-credits scene so far is that it has impressed Deadpool's creator Rob Leifeld, who recently seemed to confirm insider reports that it was going to be " mind-blowing ." Combined with the fact that the movie was teased as an " easter egg farm " by Director Shawn Levy, the post-credits scene from Deadpool & Wolverine could finally help to tie up some loose ends rather than introduce some new ones.

The Second Eternals Post-Credits Scene Explained

Kit Harington short hair

Though Marvel's newest movie, "Eternals," dabbles in the lives of each of the ten immortal Eternals on Earth, Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Ikaris ("Game of Thrones" star Richard Madden) are the central pair. After being together for about 7,000 years, the pair mysteriously broke up about a century before the events of "Eternals." In a dramatic reveal, we learn that Ikaris didn't want to keep lying to Sersi about the Emergence as it drew near, so he up and left her. Sersi, with no knowledge of this, moved on and fell in love with the human Dane Whitman ("Game of Thrones" star Kit Harington), who suspiciously looks like he could be Ikaris' brother.

In any case, the audience is left wondering if Sersi and Ikaris will get back together until Ikaris lives up to his name and literally flies into the sun. After that, Sersi and Dane are all set to begin their secret-free life together, but Dane's big family secret goes unsaid because Sersi is suddenly kidnapped by the Celestial Arishem. At the end of the credits, we pick back up with Dane, who's standing in a nicely furnished old office, anxiously staring at an oblong box. Despite his nerves, he opens it to reveal a sword covered in worn bandages and a phrase etched on the inside of the lid. He reads it — "death is my reward" — and reaches for the blade, which magically reacts to him. Then a mysterious voice speaks to Dane, indicating there's trouble (and possibly a team-up!) in his future. It's a huge tease, so here's what's going on.

Dane Whitman has a weighty family legacy with a cursed sword

Most likely, Dane Whitman was about to tell Sersi that his family has passed on the Ebony Blade and mantle of the Black Knight for centuries, dating back to his ancestor Sir Percy, a knight allied with King Arthur of Camelot. In the comics, fans know Dane as the modern Black Knight, a superhero and member of the Avengers who wields the cursed but nigh unstoppable Ebony Blade that was created from a meteorite by Merlin. From that end-credits scene, it looks like Kit Harington is once again taking the Black as he brought out the sword in what is probably an effort to save Sersi.

It's not just Dane's name that gives away his hidden identity, either. Indeed, there is another clue earlier in "Eternals," when Sersi mentions Dane's fraught relationship with his uncle. This uncle is most likely the character Nathan Garrett, who in the comics uses the Black Knight name as his supervillain alter ego before Dane wields the sword. However, the Ebony Blade's curse is that while it grants immeasurable power, it eventually makes its user succumb to rage and monstrous actions (hence Dane's hesitance over touching it in the end credits scene). This is probably what the ominous phrase "death is my reward" is referring to, which is also a Latin phrase — "mors mihi lucrum" — found in the Bible and elsewhere.

Finally, there's the mysterious voice that calls to Dane from somewhere off-screen, or perhaps somewhere not even in the room. According to "Eternals" director  Chloé Zhao , it's the voice of Mahershala Ali, the "Green Book" star who's going to be Blade in the upcoming Marvel film. Altogether, the scene teases that we're about to get a lot more Kit Harington in the MCU as the Black Knight enters the fray.
