Making Your Thesis a Success

For most students, their final research paper is the first major work written during their degree program. It is much more comprehensive and demanding than term or seminar papers they have written during the course of their studies and, therefore, requires more planning.

Theses & Certificates

Your studies are coming to an end and now all that's missing is your final paper.

Thesis - topic selection and registration

In order to find an interesting topic get in contact with chairs, lecturers, professors or external companies. There are often postings on bulletin boards or websites, or just have a look if you find something suitable on our  Jobs and Career  page.

As soon as you have found a good topic, your thesis needs to be registered.

How do I register my thesis?

Please register your thesis, no matter if bachelor’s or master’s thesis, digitally in the  thesis portal  of the TUM School of Life Sciences. Please note that the login is only possible via the eduVPN client (download: https://www.eduvpn.org/client-apps/ and instruction: https://doku.lrz.de/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=87425039 ).

You can find detailed instructions including screenshots on how to register your thesis  here .

The responsible examiner has to digitally agree to your application. If this is done, the examination team will check if the requirements for the thesis are met (credit requirements, internships, WPP-registration, etc. depending on the study program) and your registration will be submitted to the examination board for approval. If all requirements are met, the registration of your thesis will be approved by the examination team.

You will then receive  a confirmation via e-mail  from the system, which you should  save for your records . In order to have enough lead time for the review and approval of your application, it should be sent to the Campus Office about  4 weeks before the planned thesis start date .

As soon as the registration has been completed, it will also be entered and displayed in  TUMonline  within the next few days. Please check your account.

Please note that you must be enrolled until the day you submit your thesis . Further information about de-registration: https://www.tum.de/en/studies/graduation/withdrawal-from-university/

Thesis Extension and Suspension

If you cannot meet your submission deadline  for reasons beyond your control , the examination board may extend the completion period by a  maximum of half of the regular processing time . If you are unable to work due to illness , the processing time will be suspended accordingly upon request.

How do I extend my thesis?

The application for an extension must be submitted to the examination board before the date of submission and your supervisor has to agree by providing his signature. Therefore, please contact your supervisor early enough if you have problems with meeting your deadline. In general, you should expect a  processing period of approx. 3 weeks  until the examination board has decided on your application and the entry is recorded in your student file. If you are  ill  and can prove   by a  medical certificate  that you are prevented from working on your thesis, the processing time is suspended for the duration of the illness stated in the certificate. Please make sure that the  medical certificate  contains all the required information, especially the beginning and (expected) end of the inability to work on your thesis, a certificate of incapacity for work is not sufficient (instructions on this can be found via  https://www.tum.de/en/studies/during-your-studies/organizing-your-studies/examinations/withdrawing-from-examinations-medical-certificates ) Please send the signed application to  thesis.co(at)ls.tum.de . It will make it easier for us to process your application if you name it:  Last name_Extension.pdf . It will then be forwarded to the respective examination board and you will be informed after the examination board has decided on your application.

Thesis extension / suspension form  (English) Antrag auf Verlängerung / Ruhen der Abschlussarbeit  (German)

Research Phase and Master’s Thesis in the M.Sc. Quantum Science & Technology

During the last year of the Master's program Quantum Science & Technology, you will have the opportunity to work on exciting research topics in the unique research of the Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology. During this so-called research phase, you can choose from an extensive number of research groups and current projects.

The build-up of the research phase

To the scope of the one year research phase (60 ECTS) belong firstly, the development of the necessary special knowledge within a cutting-edge research line and secondly, the acquisition of the corresponding experimental or theoretical skills, that are necessary for the realization of the research project within the frame of the Master's thesis. Each of these steps conforms a module, the Master's seminar and the Master's work experience. Both modules belong intrinsically together and account in total for 30 ECTS. Subsequently, the independent research project can be carried out as part of the Master's thesis, which corresponding module comprises 30 ECTS. The research phase is completed with the Master's colloquium, the defense of the Master's thesis, within this module.

During the research phase, the fulfilment of an independent scientific work is tighly connected with the acquisition of additional skills, such as project management, team work as well as the depiction and presentation of scientific results.

*: PL="Prüfungsleistung" graded exam, SL="Studienleistung" non graded exam (pass/fail)

Finding a topic

To find a topic, please contact the possible thesis supervisors yourself.

The thesis supervisors have the possibility to advertise topics. However, not all possible topics are advertised, so it is advisable to ask the thesis supervisors directly. Other topics may also arise during the discussion.

Furthermore, it is advisable to start searching for a suitable topic early, about one semester in advance. In a personal interview, you can quickly see whether a topic appeals to you and whether you feel comfortable in the group. We discourage you from simple e-mail exchange, as it is usually not successful.

A list of possible topics is given in the linked Moodle-Course .

Registering the research phase

The registration to all modules belonging to the research phase is done at once, normally at the beginning of the third Master's semester. After agreeing on a topic with the future supervisor, the registration takes place via an online form, for the time being still via the physics web pages (access only from the Munich science network).

Following the online registration, the registration form must be printed out and handed in at the Dean's Office (Physics building). When doing this, the certificate of mentor counseling has to be included.

After six months the Master's thesis should begin. Passing the Master's seminar and the Master's work experience will be recorded in TUMonline and you are officially allowed to start the thesis.

Handing in the thesis and getting the grade including the colloquium

Before handing in the Master's thesis, you must fill in the final titel of the thesis in the database and upload an electronic copy (PDF-file). For the time being, the database is still located on the physics web pages (access only from the Munich science network). Afterwards, you have to hand in two printed and bound versions in the Dean's Office (Physics building). Only then is the thesis considered submitted; uploading the electronic copy is not sufficient to meet the deadline.

Extension of the deadline is only possible for good reasons. See FAQ on Thesis extension .

The Master's thesis will be evaluated by the supervisor and a second examiner. The second examiner is appointed by the examination board on suggestion of the supervisor (at the earliest after official registration of Master’s thesis).

The supervisor and the second examiner will also grade the Master's colloquium, which completes the research phase. The Master’s colloquium is organised and conducted by the supervisor together with the second examiner. The Master’s colloquium takes approximately 60 minutes, consisting of a 30 minutes talk and 30 minutes examination. Naturally, the inclusion of the colloquium in a group seminar is possible.

For any examination you must be enrolled as a student of TUM. Hence you need to re-enroll for one semester more e.g. if you hand in your Master’s thesis or your Master’s colloquium takes place after the current semester ends. With a due date for your thesis or a scheduled date for the colloquium e.g. in October, you should not forget to re-enroll for the winter semester and the corresponding deadline would be August 15.

Completing your Master studies

At the end of the semester in which you reach the necessary 120 ECTS in your Master's degree program and passed all required exams you will be exmatriculated (according to §13(1) enrolment rules of TUM). In most cases the Master's colloquium will be the last exam to reach this point.

You are principally allowed to take further exams after reaching the 120 ECTS, i.e. to replace previous results in the catalog of the focus areas with better results. Therefore it is generally not possible that the final documents are generated before you are exmatriculated. In case you need the final documents (or even preliminary documents) earlier, you have to request for it explicitly. See the Remarks on end of studies and final documents for further information.

Computation of the final grade

The final grade is the ECTS-weighted average of all graded exams.

Bachelor and Master thesis

In this section, you find potential topics for a bachelor and master thesis based on the research topics, we are working on at the Chair for Supply and Value Chain Management. We encourage students to write their thesis in English language. Research journals are majorly published in English, and companies today expect their employees to speak English fluently.

We preferably accept students with a significant number of lectures in supply and value chain management and related fields, as well as former participants of the advanced seminar of our chair. Nevertheless, we are always happy to receive excellent applications from students with other focus areas/ qualifications that relate to our field. The number of available topics for theses is limited by the capacity of the chair. If the number of applications is exceeding the capacity of the chair, theses will be allocated according to your previous seminars, elective course, and personal interests.

Currently tendered topics by the chair

Here, you find specific topics tendered by the chair at the moment. If you are interested, please use the “Apply now” button above.

Master theses

Topic: Markdown optimization for fresh categories (Kaufland)

For a retailer, ordering the right quantity of products is a crucial task on a daily level – too much quantity leads to food waste whereas too little leads to out – of – stock situations, lost sales, and dissatisfied customers. Excess stocks are particularly c ritical in fresh categories since the items must be sold off within a very short time due to their short best – before date. In order to sell the items before they perish (e.g., before reaching the best before date), targeted discounts are given by the employees in the stores. If a price discount i s too high, the remaining stock may be salvaged quickly, and the margin losses may be too high. On the other side, if the price discounts are too low, the risk of food waste increases.

The aim of t his master’s thesis is to develop an approach for profit – optimized markdown pricing in fresh categories (bakery, dairy and/ or counter) on a market – specific and item – specific level, with the goal to minimize the total write – offs and waste (losses from pric e reduction and remaining stock).

For a more detailed description, please follow this link: PDF: Markdown optimization for fresh categories

The tasks include:

  • Complete a structured literature review about markdown policies for overstocks

Topic: Food waste in the hospitality and food service sector

Catering for a large number of people, as is the case in canteens, at events, or in hotels, for example, poses major challenges for service providers. Consumers require an attractive offer of dishes, while their preferences and hunger are hardly known. At the same time, the provider must prevent empty buffets and sold-out meals at all costs, a setting that practically provokes food waste. We want to approach this problem from the providers’ point of view, analyze the current way of planning the quantities and meals in facilities such as hotels, canteens, mass catering, etc. and find strategies for improvement.

The Master thesis should cover the following tasks:

  • Literature overview of planning approaches in this area (both empirical and modeling-based)
  • Development of an interview guide based on open research questions appearing from the literature review (in coordination with the supervisor)
  • Finding and contacting suitable interviewees
  • Conducting the interviews and analysis of the gathered information via qualitative content analysis
  • Derivation of improvement measures

Topic: The Stochastic Patient-to-Bed Assignment Problem

Patients who are admitted to a hospital as inpatients must be assigned a bed while respecting certain constraints. For instance, gender-mixed rooms are usually to be avoided, and it is desirable to assign patients of similar age to a room since this has been shown to increase patient satisfaction. Transfers of a patient to a different room during their stay are possible but should be minimized in order to reduce work for the nurses and stress for the patients. The goal of the master’s thesis is to go beyond a rolling horizon approach by formulating the patient-to-bed assignment problem with stochastic arrivals and lengths of stay of patients using Markov decision processes (MDPs).

For a more detailed description, please follow this link: PDF: The Stochastic Patient-to-Bed Assignment Problem

The specific tasks to be performed include:

  • Generate explicit distributions and test instances from the real data set
  • Set up an automated instance generator
  • Formulate an MDP for the case with a stochastic length of stay
  • Formulate an MDP for the case where both length of stay and patient arrivals are stochastic

Yes. The Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) (NDA_Formular.pdf) should be read carefully, signed, and brought to the first or second meeting at the latest. Note that signing the NDA is required for a collaboration with our chair.

Our chair’s general rule is that it is not forbidden to use AI within your thesis – but: AI is an aid you are using and therefore you have to label for what you used AI. Please cite the AI in your text and clarify in the Appendix of your work, how you got that result from the AI (e.g., by sharing the link to your chat with ChatGPT or by sharing the prompts you used and the outcome the AI generated). But when you plan to use AI, please talk to your supervisor, if he/she allows that and if he/she wants a different documentation of your AI usage than stated here - your supervisors specifications are deciding if and how you can use AI.

Formal Requirements :

We would like to point out that in the background of the general internationalization of science and the economy, we highly recommend you write your thesis in English. Check with your supervisor if a German thesis is possible in your case.

  • Most important information regarding the format and layout is included in the official guidelines of our chair and the thesis guidelines.
  • Use the font style Times New Roman (font size 12) for the text. Write with a line spacing of 2.0. All margins should be 1 inch.

You should use the citation guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA) in your thesis. You can access the APA Publication Manual in the library.

  • Master thesis 50 (+/- 10%) pages of written text (not including tables, cover sheet, references, graphs, pictures, and appendix).

Following APA, a table of content is not necessary. However, we ask you to include a table of contents in your final thesis.

The thesis begins with a cover sheet, followed by an abstract, which is followed by your actual text. After the text follow the references, figures and tables and then possibly the appendix. At the very end you should attach your declaration of authorship. Current samples for the cover page and declaration of authorship can be found in the download
