Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited academic institution in computer science, computer engineering, information science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. 
• Candidates with strong programming skills are especially encouraged to apply.
• Candidates with strong mathematics and/or statistics backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

Fully-Funded PhD Position on Blockchain for Post-5G Communication Networks at the School of Computer science, University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the School of Computer Science at University College Dublin (UCD) to study the use cases of blockchain technology in 5G and beyond communication systems. 

Expected Start Date: January 2022 

Post Summary 

5G communication networks are being deployed worldwide, and the relevant technologies mature. What differentiated 5G from previous generations of mobile networks is not only the increased capacity and ultra-low latency but also a revolutionised network and business ecosystem with a distributed nature. This implies new business models for the research. Hence the next generation of the networks will be required to address many challenges facing the growth and development of such distributed communications ecosystems. The successful candidate will research the state-of-the-art in the area of blockchain technology’s role in 5G and beyond networking and identify gaps/opportunities for future work. Subsequently, they will develop blockchain-based solutions using smart contracts and integrate them with open source SDN/SDR-based core/metro/access network controllers and orchestrators. In addition, optimising the performance of the potential solutions will be considered an integral part of the project. 

Required Qualifications 

The applicant must have: 

• Strong background in computer/telecommunications networks; ● Working knowledge of at least one programming language such as python, JavaScript, Go and of Linux operating system; 
• Good written and oral communication skills; 
• The ability to work well in a group and; 
• Strong self-motivation and willing to learn attitude.

Desirable Qualifications 

In-depth knowledge in at least one of the following areas is essential: ● Experience with wireless/optical 5G concepts, e.g., Slicing, SDN, NFV, Open-RAN and relevant skills (OpenFlow, ONOS, P4, Virtualisation, and orchestrators) ● Experience with Blockchain and Smart Contracts, e.g., (Hyperledger Fabric, Ethereum). 

• Practical experience with network emulation/simulation environments (e.g., MININET, NS3, MATLAB) 
• Theoretical tools/methodologies with application in networks including Game Theory, Machine Learning, Optimization. 

Entry Requirements

In addition to the requirements specific to the position, the minimum entry requirements for the PhD course at UCD are:

1. Higher Education

a. 2.1 grade (i.e. with a score higher than 60% or equivalent) in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree (preferably research masters) in computer science, maths, engineering, or similar technical discipline.

2. English Language Proficiency

Non-native English speakers require at least:

a. TOEFL: A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) with no less than 21 in writing and at least 19 in every other section.

b. IELTS: An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version.

c. equivalent (further details on the equivalence of tests are available here).

The Offer 

The successful applicant will benefit from: 

- a full tuition fee waiver (EU nationals) and in return for teaching assistant duties (Non-EU nationals) plus an €18,000 annual stipend (€1,500 per month tax-free); - support for international travel and conference attendance and; - free access to UCD Sport & Fitness - Gym and Olympic Swimming Pool as a UCD student.

Machine learning for sustainable mobility research fellow.

We are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to investigate the use of Machine Learning for sustainable mobility, within CONNECT - the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications in collaboration with the E3 Kinsella SUMMIT (Sustainable Mobility Models for a Just Transition) initiative. To ensure you are prepared to tackle your dissertation, you need a supervisor who is prepared to supervise your dissertation. It is common to use your master’s thesis, research idea or exposé to submit a proposal directly in your desired area of research. You will probably have the opportunity to come into contact directly with the person of your choice at an international conference, colloquium or through direct inquiry.

PhD opportunities usually involve a paid position, e.g., as part of a project or assistant post. If this is not the case, i.e. if there is no opportunity to integrate you into the particular field, the issue of financing your PhD must be discussed and resolved in advance.

Phd ta on algorithms for complex networks, job description.

As a PhD-TA candidate, you will work on new distributed algorithms for large networks, in particular, computing the stationary distribution of random walks and policy evaluation. Random walks are used in network analysis for ranking vertices, community detection, and embedding of the vertices in multi-dimensional space for machine learning tasks. Policy evaluation is widely used in reinforcement learning, for instance, for training large language models. Your challenge is to develop, analyze and implement algorithms where the network vertices act independently by learning from their local observations. You will mathematically analyze the algorithms on random graph models and implement them on large real-life networks.

The position is closely related to the NETWORKS program of the SPOR cluster at the TU/e. You will join a lively group of academic staff, PhD candidates and postdocs who all share their fascination for mathematics of complex networks.  You will greatly benefit from the many workshops on networks and random graphs at the Eurandom conference center based at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the TU/e.

The PhD TA position is for 5 years with 25% of your time spent on education. Your advisor, as well as other members of the Probability group, are committed to effective innovative education. You will have the opportunity to use your creativity for designing, guiding and assessing new inspiring learning activities for the students, while we will guide you in your growth as educator.

Job requirements

• A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in mathematics or applied mathematics.
• A research-oriented attitude.
• Motivated to develop your teaching skills and coach students.
• Motivated to develop and implement innovative course design
• Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level).

Conditions of employment

• Full-time employment for five years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 25% of your employment on teaching tasks.
• Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. €2,770 max. €3,539).
• A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
