Top five research articles of 2020

Top 5 Research articles

Despite the significant challenges this year has posed, The Pharmaceutical Journal  has continued to publish high-quality peer-reviewed research.

Our researchers have made a range of investigations — from evaluating pharmacist interventions using the Simpler tool in Malaysia , to a pharmacist-led virtual thiopurine clinic to support people with inflammatory bowel disease and auto-immune hepatitis, here in the UK.

We have some exciting research coming up in 2021, but in case you missed them the first time around, here are the top five most popular research articles of 2020:

5. Misuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs to obtain illicit highs: how pharmacists can prevent abuse

Use of prescription and over-the-counter drugs for recreational purposes is increasing, and this perspective article collates the existing literature to provide an in-depth overview of the misuse and diversion of a range of drugs with psychoactive potential, including gabapentinoids, antihistamine drugs and loperamide.

4. Effective detection and management of hypertension through community pharmacy in England

Community pharmacists can play a big role in managing hypertension — from the identification of medication-related problems, to providing lifestyle advice. Despite this, they are not routinely involved in structured hypertension management or screening programmes. So, this review summarises the evidence to recommend the roll-out of a community pharmacy-led hypertension management service.

3. Recent advances in the oral delivery of biologics

Oral administration of medicines is often preferred by patients for its convenience, but, for biologics, the gastrointestinal tract poses challenges for administering in this way. This review discusses the advantages and limitations of several novel drug delivery strategies, and highlights the work to be done to put this technology into clinical practice.

2. Immuno-oncology agents for cancer therapy

Immuno-oncology is a novel treatment that works by conditioning the body’s immune cells to recognise and kill cancer cells — combining this treatment with conventional therapies has led to promising improvements in patient outcomes. This review looks at the range of immuno-oncology agents, and how problems such as their toxicity and high cost can be overcome.

1. Investigational treatments for COVID-19

The emergence of COVID-19 resulted in a global research effort to find effective treatment options to relieve healthcare burdens and, ultimately, save lives. In June 2020, this rapid review summarised the clinical trials and treatment evidence at the time.

Research Topic Ideas for Biology

Pharmacy research ideas encompasses a variety of topics dealing with drugs and pharmaceuticals. Some broad areas of pharmaceutical research relate to drug delivery, pharmaceutical cell biology, medicinal chemistry and medicine management. Faculty and graduate students at pharmaceutical colleges typically engage in such research, and some go on to develop new drugs and delivery methods.

TL;DR (Too Long; Didn't Read)

For students pursing doctorate degrees, pharmacy research offers many topics for a thesis, such as developing new drugs for cancer treatments, drug delivery methods, pharmaceutical cell biology and medicine management. Other topic ideas include plants as a source of medicinal products, interaction of drugs with RNA, synthetic medicines and many more.

Cancer Drug Studies

Cancer drug studies represent one type of pharmacological research topic. For instance, researchers study the role of steroid drugs in the growth of breast cancer. Other topics include the development of new cancer therapies and using targeted approaches for drug delivery to treat cancer. These types of studies aim to help patients deal with cancer and better handle the effects of cancer.

Drug Delivery

Another major topic for pharmacy research relates to drug delivery. One such research study at looks at the design and evaluation of drug delivery systems, emphasizing some methods of delivery such as liposomes and liquid crystals. Another research project studies the immediate environment of the lung, particularly how a person reacts to inflammatory stress and the use of drug treatments. Investigators use human lung epithelial cell culture for the study, studying humans as well as animals.

Pharmaceutical Cell Biology

Research in the area of pharmaceutical cell biology aims to understand basic cell biology and relate the findings to diseases in humans. Some such research projects in this area have dealt with topics such as inflammation processes in human disease, mechanisms for cell-to-cell communications and mechanisms of carcinogenesis. This sort of research is likely to involve close work with biologists who have similar research interests in these sorts of topics.

Medicine Management

Medicines management research looks into the cost effectiveness of new interventions that aim to improve the health of patients. Some of this research focuses on older people and on mental illness along with medicine management. These topics deal with the evaluation of pharmacist-led services, interventions that improve the adherence of medications, consultation skills, medication review services and interventions for reducing the problems that come about as a result of dysphagia.

Developing a research question

Developing a research question is not always easy. Use the tips here and explore the books and links to help you determine a topic. 1. Start by considering what you are interested in, and what drew you to pharmacy practice. You'll be working with this project for some time, so having personal interest is important. 2. Consider the readings you have been assigned in class. What questions have you developed after reading, say, a chapter about communication skills for pharmacists? Or the effects of rising costs of drugs? Could you do a project to answer these questions? 3. Research is intended to fill in gaps in knowledge. Consider any readings you have done, or lectures you have attended, where it is mentioned that more research is needed to answer a question. Can you try to answer part or all of that question? 4. Examine specific types of research to find gaps in knowledge.

4a. Examine guidelines and look at the levels of evidence supporting each claim. Are claims supported by low-level evidence? Could you create stronger evidence?

4b. Look at UpToDate or other clinical tools, focusing on the evidence supporting each claim. Are the claims supported by high-level or low-level evidence? Could you create better evidence? 4c. Examine textbooks focused on pharmacotherapy, body systems, or diseases. Look for problems mentioned in these texts, look for future directions in research being summarized, look for words like "unclear, controversial, uncertain." All of these areas can be possible research topics.

Crafting a Recipe for Research Success in Pharmacy Residency Programs

  • Christian Eslinger, PharmD, MBA, MEng

Multiple preparatory steps are involved in creating a delicious meal. Planning, preparation, and revision are similarly important in building a successful residency research program.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) advocate for the inclusion of research or other project opportunities within postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residency programs as a means of utilizing scientific evidence to improve patient care and promote critical thinking, collaboration, and project management skills. 1,2 An estimated 36% to 40% of residency-trained pharmacists will publish in their career, emphasizing the increasing integration of scholarly activities within the pharmacy field, including both academic and non-academic practice settings. 3-5 However, despite approximately 80% of pharmacy residency programs including research as a program requirement, 6,7 residents often report poor confidence in their research skills, and their efforts result in publication rates as low as 1.8%. 8 While these residents often have excellent “ingredients” to work from—motivation, supportive preceptors, unique practice settings and pharmacy initiatives—these alone are not enough. They need a recipe in place in order to know how to put the ingredients together and craft a publication. In this article, we share our best practices for establishing a successful and sustainable resident research program.

Tip 1. Get the Right Cooks in the Kitchen

Preparing to open a new restaurant often starts with identifying a head chef to lead the team and shape the menu’s concept. Leadership oversight is also necessary for an effective resident research program. Although residency preceptors affiliated with a college or school of pharmacy who are seeking to boost their scholarly productivity may have the greatest interest and investment in the research program’s success, we would suggest that the clinical coordinator affiliated with the residency program is often most suited to the role of chef de cuisine , as they can best liaise with upper leadership to secure administrative buy-in, advocate for increased program resources, outline the vision and goals for the program, and secure the commitment of their team. Other dedicated preceptors thus can adopt the role of the “sous chef” and work to execute the vision, handle program logistics, and identify clinical and operational needs. However, few restaurants could survive, let alone thrive and grow, if staffed by only one chef, no matter how passionate or highly skilled.

Similarly, laying the groundwork for a successful residency research program begins with recruiting a team of motivated pharmacists and expanding pharmacy services throughout the institution. Ensuring adequate staffing for clinical coverage allows more “breathing room” in the day to free up time for research endeavors and other professional growth opportunities associated with pharmacists’ career satisfaction.9 Since 2016, the clinical team at our institution, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (SJHMC), has added 3 investigational drug services pharmacists who help the residents navigate the institutional review board (IRB) process, 8 clinical pharmacists who are involved in the daily clinical work flow, and 1 additional faculty pharmacist who is involved in experiential education and residency training.

Tip 2. Keep Your Pantry Well-Stocked Through Leadership Buy-in

Lack of administrative support has frequently been cited as a notable barrier to residency research efforts. 10,11 Just as even a top chef would struggle to prepare a quality meal in a cramped kitchen lacking pantry staples, the growth of a residency research program is likely to be similarly stymied without institutional support. The pharmacy leadership team, which includes clinical managers in addition to residency program directors, can contribute substantially to the success of residency research programs by fostering a departmental culture that promotes scholarship. For residency program directors and coordinators, this may include delineating the research project and select dissemination opportunities as program requirements, and explicitly naming publication as a goal. While it should be acknowledged and communicated to residents that publication may not always be achievable for every residency project and is secondary to skills development, 2 having publication in mind as the quality standard can help build a culture of excellence around research and lead to more successful research endeavors. 12

For pharmacy managers seeking to boost their department’s research productivity, it is also important to demonstrate to their team that research is incentivized and valued. This includes recognizing research efforts in annual performance evaluations and raises, supporting pharmacists’ professional development in research (such as through full or partial reimbursement for the ASHP Research Skills Certificate or travel associated with the ACCP Focused Investigator Training Program), and allocating funding for statistical support and publication charges when feasible.

Pharmacy departments, like restaurants, operate under thin margins and “affording the pantry” represents a common barrier to providing residents with optimal research support. 10 Potential solutions for programs include partnerships with colleges of pharmacy or more “resource-rich” institutions in order to take advantage of existing resources. 13,14 Integration of pharmacists within patient care teams can also help spark research questions and promote interdisciplinary research collaborations.15 This can allow the program to tap into the resources of other departments within the institution, which often have more expansive budgets for supporting research endeavors.

Tip 3. Design a Cohesive Menu

If you enter a New Orleans restaurant anticipating some authentic local cuisine, you would probably be surprised to see a hamburger on the menu. However, with locally sourced meat, Cajun spices, and sides of hush puppies and Maque Choux, the inclusion of the dish would start to make sense. Similarly, if you choose to incorporate presentations and topic discussions within your resident development program, it is encouraged to keep the content cohesive with the rest of your residency “menu.” In other words, research should not be presented as an ancillary, optional skill; rather, the tools needed for research success should be anchored to those used in residents’ clinical practice.

Structured research training and development programs have been shown to increase the likelihood of publication success while increasing resident satisfaction.16 Aligning research program outcomes with the overall goals of the residency program can help pharmacy faculty and preceptors interested in establishing a formal residency research training program best make the business case to pharmacy leadership that research education brings value to the residents and department beyond publication and is something that should be emphasized and supported. Cultivating a research mindset involves sparking residents’ curiosity while developing ownership, humility, resiliency, and a healthy skepticism—all traits that can be used to positively benefit patient care and interprofessional relationships.

Research programs additionally provide an excellent platform for residents to hone their communication skills by learning how to distill the results of a year-long project into its most salient components and convey a focused and clear message for their audience. At SJHMC, quarterly research update meetings are designed to increase resident comfort with communicating research methodology and outcomes in a low-stakes setting to strengthen their presentation skills. Study design and biostatistics reviews in particular represent often underutilized opportunities to tie research fundamentals to clinical practice. For example, at SJHMC a review of diagnostic test performance and sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value calculations is presented alongside an article on the predictive value of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal swab polymerase chain reaction assay for diagnosis of MRSA pneumonia, fostering a discussion of the clinical implications of a positive or negative result as it relates to antibiotic therapy for pneumonia and whether the results can be used to support vancomycin or linezolid (Zyvox; Pfizer) discontinuation.

Tip 4. Watch the Clock!

For chefs executing a complex recipe, little time is spent standing still. The time needed for each of the dish’s components is planned down to the minute and fit together to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency. However, most new pharmacists do not enter residency with a honed understanding of the time involved in each of the steps needed to bring a research project to completion. Inherent to any PGY1 program, residents juggle multiple competing demands on their time and despite, in theory, having a full year to work on these demands, suboptimal time management is often a major reason why resident research is not published. 8 We thus encourage programs to take a “work smarter not harder” approach to the structuring of any research program, aligning research education with the pacing of the residency project.

The research development series and update meetings within SJHMC’s program are designed to promote “micro-planning” and break down the components of the research project and its deliverables into a set of recommended progress points to promote effective pacing and time-management ( Table 1 ).

For example, residents receive training on writing a manuscript’s introduction and methods in September, following the time the residents will have completed a literature search and protocol development for IRB submission. This allows the material to be directly applied at the time it is fresh and most relevant, rather than being forgotten later or presented as an overwhelming amount of information. We have found additionally that a quarterly presentation frequency for the residents represents the optimal balance between spurring research progress and promoting accountability while maintaining realistic workload expectations.

Tip 5. Taste as You Go

Even when they are preparing dishes for a well-established menu, chefs continue to taste, assess, and modify the amount of each ingredient throughout the cooking process as needed to reach the most harmonious balance of flavors. Similarly, resident research programs should build in mechanisms for assessment and reassessment of research feasibility. Early refinement of potential ideas into answerable research questions (for example, using the PICO [Patient-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome] framework) is particularly important as not all worthy ideas for investigation are suitable as resident research projects, but may be appropriate subjects of medication use evaluations or quality improvement projects. 17 Continual reassessment and troubleshooting of arising issues allows for project modification as needed, for example cutting or simplifying a data point that requires an outsized amount of time to collect, and helps to avoid the “scope creep” that can result in projects ballooning out beyond their initial objectives.

Tip 6. Savor Your Success…and Build a Bigger “Dinner Table”

In line with the prior comments about establishing a research culture, it is important to celebrate and promote successful research efforts, particularly those describing outcomes of institutional initiatives and collaborations. This can include internal recognition through newsletters, committee meetings, and health system groups. We also suggest promoting resident research and any formal development programs on the residency website and other social media. Resident research training programs are rarely highlighted despite research requirements being common among PGY1 programs, 18 which may serve as a differentiator and support resident recruitment efforts. Anecdotally, at SJHMC we commonly receive inquiries related to our research program from prospective residents, which has helped to widen our application pool and attract motivated candidates, which further increases the likelihood of publication.

In addition to opening up more avenues within the pharmacy community, as the success of our research program has gained attention within our institution, physician collaborators that initially the pharmacy department was recruiting to work on projects together are now coming to the pharmacy department with research ideas and resources. These resources have included funding for statistical expertise and meeting attendance to present data, institutional support for IT services and reports generation, and open access publication funding. Close collaboration within research has also benefited the relationship and trust within the clinical space as well.

Conclusion: Digesting it All

Developing a successful residency research program is challenging but enjoyable, with potential benefits to residents, preceptors and faculty, departments of pharmacy, and patient care as a whole. Just like the first time preparing a gourmet meal, the first iteration may not always come out the way the chef planned, but with continued enhancement and innovation it can become the talk of the town.

A milestone year for PA program just one highlight of CPHS graduation

best research topics in pharmacy

College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences graduates 230 students in pharmacy, general sciences, clinical research, public health, pharmaceutical sciences, nursing and physician assistant practice Friday

It was roughly 13 years ago when Campbell launched its Master of Physician Assistant Practice program, a precursor to its medical school two years later and a stepping stone to the University’s emergence as a leader in health care education in North Carolina in the decade that followed.

Campbell’s College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences celebrated the 10th graduating class of its PA program on Friday during its Spring Commencement ceremony inside the Pope Convocation Center’s Gore Arena. Roughly 180 students in pharmacy, general sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, clinical research, nursing and public health joined the milestone cohort of 50 PA graduates in a ceremony filled with new beginnings and touching endings.

Dr. Jeff Mercer, in his first spring ceremony as dean for the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, took time in his welcome address to offer gratitude to Betty Lynn W. Johnson, director of Campbell’s PA program since 2018 and a significant part of the program since arriving in 2011 (the year of its launch). Laura Gerstner will take over the role of chair and program director on June 1 of this summer.

“After multiple degrees from Campbell and 13 years of dedicated service to the institution and her students, Mrs. Johnson will be stepping away from the program,” Mercer said. “She is not one to seek the spotlight, but as I’ve come to know, it seems that others certainly shine brighter when she is around.

“She’s going to hate me for that,” Mercer quipped after the applause.

In his first commencement weekend since announcing his upcoming retirement in 2025, Campbell President Dr. J. Bradley Creed said he could very well run into former Camels in the health care field after he steps down.

“ I have a lot of confidence in you and the education that you received, that if I ever need a skilled health care professional, I can trust my care to you,” he said. “Hopefully not this afternoon, but sometime in the future.”

In keeping with the PA theme, Emily Adams — chief executive officer for the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants — delivered the keynote address for Friday’s ceremony. In her role at the state level and as a registered lobbyist, Adams has advocated for PA practice rights in North Carolina — successfully advocating for waivers during the COVID-19 pandemic and leading efforts to re-establish the organization’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee.

Adams said she’s been to Campbell several times and is always struck by the University’s “sense of connection, care, camaraderie and community.” The called graduation one of the few moments in life where past, present and future all collide. She asked the graduates to close their eyes, absorb the gravity of the moment and take it in and announced them “ready” to enter the exciting field of health care.

“Health care continues to change and evolve, shaped by exponentially growing medical knowledge and technology. And when we talk about health care, we often bring up the many challenges,” she said. “But I have a deep hope as I stand before and look at each of you, that when they talk about addressing health care staffing shortages, I see so many eager faces ready to join the ranks.

“When they talk about burnout, I see professionals who have developed and honed their resilience skills.

“When they talk about improving patient experience, I see providers who are servant leaders training in patient-centric care. When they talk about building strong health care teams, I see individuals who are trained in an interprofessional model and ready to work together in the service of their patients.

“And when I think about addressing health equity, I see inclusive leaders who are ready to address the social determinants of health care.”

In closing, Adams offered advice about not only caring for patients, but caring for their own physical and mental health. She asked the graduates to lean on each other and reach out when they have questions or need assistance.

“I’ve observed that Campbell graduates are natural leaders and advocates, whether it’s for their patients, their volunteer projects, their task forces or their communities,” Adams said.

Graduate Katie Heffner was among the 48 students who earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree on Friday, and she said her favorite moment during her Campbell journey was learning of her acceptance into the nursing program as a sophomore.

“This impacted my experience, because all of my hard work had finally paid off, and I was excited that my dreams were coming true,” Heffner said. “Graduating college is a huge milestone — it gives you a foundation to build your career and life on and provides people with the skills needed to be successful in the world.”

Her classmate, Mackenzie Helms, said she was excited to apply what she’s learned over the last four years while caring for her future patients.

“I’ve worked toward this goal for many years,” she said. “Graduating from college to me means all my hard work was worth it. I get to finally work in my desired field and begin my journey as a nurse.”

Pharmacy Exec Sentenced in Michigan Over Deadly 2012 Meningitis Outbreak

(Reuters) - A former owner of a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy whose mold-tainted drugs sparked a deadly U.S. fungal meningitis outbreak in 2012 was sentenced on Friday to at least 10 years in prison for his role in the deaths of 11 Michigan residents.

Barry Cadden, the former president of New England Compounding Center (NECC), was sentenced by Judge Matthew McGivney in Howell, Michigan, after pleading no contest in March to involuntary manslaughter charges related to the 11 deaths.

The 10- to 15-year sentence will run concurrently with an already-imposed 14-1/2 year federal prison term that Cadden, 57, is serving after he was convicted in 2017 on racketeering and fraud charges related to misrepresentations he made to NECC customers about its drugs.

Federal prosecutors in Boston had also sought to convict Cadden of second-degree murder over 25 deaths nationally caused by mold-tainted steroids that Framingham, Massachusetts-based NECC produced. Jurors acquitted Cadden of those charges.

Michigan's attorney general subsequently brought charges in state court against Cadden and Glenn Chin, NECC's former supervisory pharmacist, who like Cadden was convicted of federal fraud charges but cleared at trial of second-degree murder.

"The families of these 11 victims will forever bear the weight of Mr. Cadden's greed and disregard for basic standards that caused this horrific tragedy," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement.

Prosecutors said NECC produced the drugs in filthy and unsafe conditions and sold them to hospitals and clinics nationally. The outbreak sickened 793 patients, more than 100 of whom have died, federal prosecutors have said.

Cadden's sentence on Friday credited him for the more than 6-1/2 years he has already spent in custody, according to his lawyer, Gerald Gleeson. He had no further comment.

Charges in Michigan remain pending against Chin, who has pleaded not guilty and is serving a 10-1/2 year federal sentence.

How To Use ChatGPT For Keyword Research

ChatGPT for keyword research can be a powerful assistant. Understand any topic for keyword research in minutes with these prompts.

best research topics in pharmacy

Anyone not using ChatGPT for keyword research is missing a trick.

You can save time and understand an entire topic in seconds instead of hours.

In this article, I outline my most effective ChatGPT prompts for keyword research and teach you how I put them together so that you, too, can take, edit, and enhance them even further.

But before we jump into the prompts, I want to emphasize that you shouldn’t replace keyword research tools or disregard traditional keyword research methods .

ChatGPT can make mistakes. It can even create new keywords if you give it the right prompt. For example, I asked it to provide me with a unique keyword for the topic “SEO” that had never been searched before.

“ Interstellar Internet SEO : Optimizing content for the theoretical concept of an interstellar internet, considering the challenges of space-time and interplanetary communication delays.”

Although I want to jump into my LinkedIn profile and update my title to “Interstellar Internet SEO Consultant,” unfortunately, no one has searched that (and they probably never will)!

You must not blindly rely on the data you get back from ChatGPT.

What you can rely on ChatGPT for is the topic ideation stage of keyword research and inspiration.

ChatGPT is a large language model trained with massive amounts of data to accurately predict what word will come next in a sentence. However, it does not know how to do keyword research yet.

Instead, think of ChatGPT as having an expert on any topic armed with the information if you ask it the right question.

In this guide, that is exactly what I aim to teach you how to do – the most essential prompts you need to know when performing topical keyword research .

Best ChatGPT Keyword Research Prompts

The following ChatGPT keyword research prompts can be used on any niche, even a topic to which you are brand new.

For this demonstration, let’s use the topic of “ SEO ” to demonstrate these prompts.

Generating Keyword Ideas Based On A Topic

What are the {x} most popular sub-topics related to {topic}.

chatgpt keyword research prompts subtopics related to topic

The first prompt is to give you an idea of the niche.

As shown above, ChatGPT did a great job understanding and breaking down SEO into three pillars: on-page , off-page & technical .

The key to the following prompt is to take one of the topics ChatGPT has given and query the sub-topics.

What Are The {X} Most Popular Sub-topics Related To {Sub-topic}?

For this example, let’s query, “What are the most popular sub-topics related to keyword research?”

Having done keyword research for over 10 years, I would expect it to output information related to keyword research metrics, the types of keywords, and intent .

Let’s see.

ChatGPT keyword prompt subtopic

Again, right on the money.

To get the keywords you want without having ChatGPT describe each answer, use the prompt “list without description.”

Here is an example of that.

List Without Description The Top {X} Most Popular Keywords For The Topic Of {X}

You can even branch these keywords out further into their long-tail .

Example prompt: List Without Description The Top {X} Most Popular Long-tail Keywords For The Topic “{X}”

chatgpt keyword research prompt longtail keywords

List Without Description The Top Semantically Related Keywords And Entities For The Topic {X}

You can even ask ChatGPT what any topic’s semantically related keywords and entities are!

chatgpt keyword research semantic intent

Tip: The Onion Method Of Prompting ChatGPT

When you are happy with a series of prompts, add them all to one prompt. For example, so far in this article, we have asked ChatGPT the following:

  • What are the four most popular sub-topics related to SEO?
  • What are the four most popular sub-topics related to keyword research
  • List without description the top five most popular keywords for “keyword intent”?
  • List without description the top five most popular long-tail keywords for the topic “keyword intent types”?
  • List without description the top semantically related keywords and entities for the topic “types of keyword intent in SEO.”

Combine all five into one prompt by telling ChatGPT to perform a series of steps. Example:

“Perform the following steps in a consecutive order Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, Step 4, and Step 5”
“Perform the following steps in a consecutive order Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, Step 4 and Step 5. Step 1 – Generate an answer for the 3 most popular sub-topics related to {Topic}?. Step 2 – Generate 3 of the most popular sub-topics related to each answer. Step 3 – Take those answers and list without description their top 3 most popular keywords. Step 4 – For the answers given of their most popular keywords, provide 3 long-tail keywords. Step 5 – for each long-tail keyword offered in the response, a list without descriptions 3 of their top semantically related keywords and entities.”

Generating Keyword Ideas Based On A Question

Taking the steps approach from above, we can get ChatGPT to help streamline getting keyword ideas based on a question. For example, let’s ask, “ What is SEO? ”

“Perform the following steps in a consecutive order Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, and Step 4. Step 1 Generate 10 questions about “{Question}”?. Step 2 – Generate 5 more questions about “{Question}” that do not repeat the above. Step 3 – Generate 5 more questions about “{Question}” that do not repeat the above. Step 4 – Based on the above Steps 1,2,3 suggest a final list of questions avoiding duplicates or semantically similar questions.”

Generating Keyword Ideas Using ChatGPT Based On The Alphabet Soup Method

One of my favorite methods, manually, without even using a keyword research tool, is to generate keyword research ideas from Google autocomplete , going from A to Z.

Generating Keyword Ideas using ChatGPT Based on the Alphabet Soup Method

You can also do this using ChatGPT.

Example prompt:

“give me popular keywords that includes the keyword “SEO”, and the next letter of the word starts with a”

ChatGPT Alphabet keyword research method

Tip : Using the onion prompting method above, we can combine all this in one prompt.

“Give me five popular keywords that include “SEO” in the word, and the following letter starts with a. Once the answer has been done, move on to giving five more popular keywords that include “SEO” for each letter of the alphabet b to z.”

Generating Keyword Ideas Based On User Personas

When it comes to keyword research, understanding user personas is essential for understanding your target audience and keeping your keyword research focused and targeted. ChatGPT may help you get an initial understanding of customer personas.

“For the topic of “{Topic}” list 10 keywords each for the different types of user personas”

ChatGPT and user personas

You could even go a step further and ask for questions based on those topics that those specific user personas may be searching for:

ChatGPT and keyword research based on persona

As well as get the keywords to target based on those questions:

“For each question listed above for each persona, list the keywords, as well as the long-tail keywords to target, and put them in a table”

question and longtail and user persona using a table for ChatGPT keyword research

Generating Keyword Ideas Using ChatGPT Based On Searcher Intent And User Personas

Understanding the keywords your target persona may be searching is the first step to effective keyword research. The next step is to understand the search intent behind those keywords and which content format may work best.

For example, a business owner who is new to SEO or has just heard about it may be searching for “what is SEO.”

However, if they are further down the funnel and in the navigational stage, they may search for “top SEO firms.”

You can query ChatGPT to inspire you here based on any topic and your target user persona.

SEO Example:

“For the topic of “{Topic}” list 10 keywords each for the different types of searcher intent that a {Target Persona} would be searching for”

ChatGPT For Keyword Research Admin

Here is how you can best use ChatGPT for keyword research admin tasks.

Using ChatGPT As A Keyword Categorization Tool

One of the use cases for using ChatGPT is for keyword categorization .

In the past, I would have had to devise spreadsheet formulas to categorize keywords or even spend hours filtering and manually categorizing keywords.

ChatGPT can be a great companion for running a short version of this for you.

Let’s say you have done keyword research in a keyword research tool, have a list of keywords, and want to categorize them.

You could use the following prompt:

“Filter the below list of keywords into categories, target persona, searcher intent, search volume and add information to a six-column table: List of keywords – [LIST OF KEYWORDS], Keyword Search Volume [SEARCH VOLUMES] and Keyword Difficulties [KEYWORD DIFFICUTIES].”

Using Chat GPT as a Keyword Categorization Tool

Tip : Add keyword metrics from the keyword research tools, as using the search volumes that a ChatGPT prompt may give you will be wildly inaccurate at best.

Using ChatGPT For Keyword Clustering

Another of ChatGPT’s use cases for keyword research is to help you cluster . Many keywords have the same intent, and by grouping related keywords, you may find that one piece of content can often target multiple keywords at once.

However, be careful not to rely only on LLM data for clustering. What ChatGPT may cluster as a similar keyword, the SERP or the user may not agree with. But it is a good starting point.

The big downside of using ChatGPT for keyword clustering is actually the amount of keyword data you can cluster based on the memory limits.

So, you may find a keyword clustering tool or script that is better for large keyword clustering tasks. But for small amounts of keywords, ChatGPT is actually quite good.

A great use small keyword clustering use case using ChatGPT is for grouping People Also Ask (PAA) questions.

Use the following prompt to group keywords based on their semantic relationships. For example:

“Organize the following keywords into groups based on their semantic relationships, and give a short name to each group: [LIST OF PAA], create a two-column table where each keyword sits on its own row.

Using Chat GPT For Keyword Clustering

Using Chat GPT For Keyword Expansion By Patterns

One of my favorite methods of doing keyword research is pattern spotting.

Most seed keywords have a variable that can expand your target keywords.

Here are a few examples of patterns:

1. Question Patterns

(who, what, where, why, how, are, can, do, does, will)

“Generate [X] keywords for the topic “[Topic]” that contain any or all of the following “who, what, where, why, how, are, can, do, does, will”

question based keywords keyword research ChatGPT

2. Comparison Patterns

“Generate 50 keywords for the topic “{Topic}” that contain any or all of the following “for, vs, alternative, best, top, review”

chatgpt comparison patterns for keyword research

3. Brand Patterns

Another one of my favorite modifiers is a keyword by brand.

We are probably all familiar with the most popular SEO brands; however, if you aren’t, you could ask your AI friend to do the heavy lifting.

“For the top {Topic} brands what are the top “vs” keywords”

ChatGPT brand patterns prompt

4. Search Intent Patterns

One of the most common search intent patterns is “best.”

When someone is searching for a “best {topic}” keyword, they are generally searching for a comprehensive list or guide that highlights the top options, products, or services within that specific topic, along with their features, benefits, and potential drawbacks, to make an informed decision.

“For the topic of “[Topic]” what are the 20 top keywords that include “best”

ChatGPT best based keyword research

Again, this guide to keyword research using ChatGPT has emphasized the ease of generating keyword research ideas by utilizing ChatGPT throughout the process.

Keyword Research Using ChatGPT Vs. Keyword Research Tools

Free vs. paid keyword research tools.

Like keyword research tools, ChatGPT has free and paid options.

However, one of the most significant drawbacks of using ChatGPT for keyword research alone is the absence of SEO metrics to help you make smarter decisions.

To improve accuracy, you could take the results it gives you and verify them with your classic keyword research tool – or vice versa, as shown above, uploading accurate data into the tool and then prompting.

However, you must consider how long it takes to type and fine-tune your prompt to get your desired data versus using the filters within popular keyword research tools.

For example, if we use a popular keyword research tool using filters, you could have all of the “best” queries with all of their SEO metrics:

ahrefs screenshot for best seo

And unlike ChatGPT, generally, there is no token limit; you can extract several hundred, if not thousands, of keywords at a time.

As I have mentioned multiple times throughout this piece, you cannot blindly trust the data or SEO metrics it may attempt to provide you with.

The key is to validate the keyword research with a keyword research tool.

ChatGPT For International SEO Keyword Research

ChatGPT can be a terrific multilingual keyword research assistant.

For example, if you wanted to research keywords in a foreign language such as French. You could ask ChatGPT to translate your English keywords;

translating keywords with ChatGPT

But don’t worry, there is a workaround: If you have access to a competitor keyword research tool, you can see what webpage is ranking for that query – and then identify the top keyword for that page based on the ChatGPT translated keywords that do have search volume.

top keyword from ahrefs keyword explorer

Or, if you don’t have access to a paid keyword research tool, you could always take the top-performing result, extract the page copy, and then ask ChatGPT what the primary keyword for the page is.

Key Takeaway

ChatGPT can be an expert on any topic and an invaluable keyword research tool. However, it is another tool to add to your toolbox when doing keyword research; it does not replace traditional keyword research tools.

As shown throughout this tutorial, from making up keywords at the beginning to inaccuracies around data and translations, ChatGPT can make mistakes when used for keyword research.

You cannot blindly trust the data you get back from ChatGPT.

However, it can offer a shortcut to understanding any topic for which you need to do keyword research and, as a result, save you countless hours.

But the key is how you prompt.

The prompts I shared with you above will help you understand a topic in minutes instead of hours and allow you to better seed keywords using keyword research tools.

It can even replace mundane keyword clustering tasks that you used to do with formulas in spreadsheets or generate ideas based on keywords you give it.

Paired with traditional keyword research tools, ChatGPT for keyword research can be a powerful tool in your arsenal.
