THE SOCIAL SPACE OF CONFLICT Multiple Divisions and Everyday Dynamics in the Old City of Nicosia [Doctoral Thesis]
This thesis hopes to serve as a dual experiment to approach the “Cyprus Problem” from a spatial perspective, while elaborating on the production of social space through the lens of confict, in the case of the divided old city of Nicosia, Cyprus. In this framework, Nicosia is actually the “socio-spatial lab” that offers the opportunity to “dig” under the visible urban mosaic, towards a city made out of memory, oblivion, trauma, senses, smells, collective actions, aspirations, stereotypes, thrills, ghosts and dreams. A city, where the everyday actors produce a space through narrations, mappings and actions, while inviting us to a new “geography”, where reality meets imagination and the communities’ secrets and expectations become our guide in space. From this perspective, this thesis is actually an alternative map of the divided Nicosia. While the offcial map of the city shows the physical scar of the Green Line and the Buffer Zone, creating the Turkish Cypriot North and the Greek Cypriot South, I suggest that there are multiple divisions and contacts produced by everyday dynamics that are worth to be mapped. In this context, I hope to offer a mapping process that reveals invisible borders being crossed or avoided, and which will probably remain even after the demolishment of the visible ones. Within the broader debate on the production of space, I collect, evaluate, manage and narrate feldwork data that serve both as an input to the mapping process and as an output for the creation of the city’s image. In particular, I suggest two axes: frstly, space in the mind as presented by oral history and mental mapping processes involving local everyday actors; and, secondly, the common space of demand as produced by grassroots activism and the broader civil space. The goal is to shed light on different aspects of the division. In this sense, I elaborate on the mental representations of confict, the emerging quest for wholeness and the confrontation of different dynamics that claim hegemony over common space. As a result, I come up with a new reading of Nicosia and a further understanding of the production of the social space of confict.

This article presents the emergence and development of grassroots and self-organised activism in Nicosia. Following the thread of crucial actions, including the Occupy Buffer Zone (OBZ) movement, within the UN controlled area of the old town of Nicosia, we elaborate on a transforming political subjectivity, exploring its timeline, composition, demands, practices and potentials. Through everyday practice and direct socio-political and cultural action, activists contest the dominant narratives and the institutionalised ‘bi-communal’ co-operation towards a ‘communal’ identity and a new radical politics. They manage to produce common space of demand in the old town, while localising the global call for action inspired by the recent global uprisings. Finally, we examine the rise of burgeoning new dynamics in times of capitalist crisis and the new tasks ahead.

There are important reciprocities between conflict and memory, which often become embedded in disputed places or territories central to ethnonational conflicts. In Cyprus, the conflict and the subsequent division of the capital city of Nicosia, has disrupted the relationship between place and memory, as populations faced upheaval and displacement. The inability to cross the border running through the city center, from 1974 until checkpoints opened in 2003, resulted in the intensification of many aspects of memory, including forgetting, nostalgia and screen memory as related to the city. This article will describe Nicosia’s historic walled city center as a shell of memory by examining the material reality of the city today and investigating subjective constructions whereby the graphic image of the walled city is used as a symbol. The contested walled city is a site that negotiates between remembering and forgetting, between past and present, and between inside and outside.

Bifurcated by a demilitarized United Nations Buffer Zone since 1974, Nicosia is the only divided capital city in Europe. In 1979, its dual municipalities devised a radical, bicommunal Master Plan to mitigate some of the buffer zone’s divisionary effects and to revitalize the city center. This thesis examines the role of historic preservation within the Nicosia Master Plan, investigating the development of the plan’s preservation element and evaluating how the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings on either side of the barrier have promoted peaceful interaction and spurred economic growth and resettlement in the central city. Population growth, the booming heritage tourism industry, and the proliferation of bicommunal cultural events all indicate the successful implementation of these strategies. Of interest to preservationists, planners, and policymakers faced with divisive and nontraditional planning challenges, this is a timely topic that reveals the potential for preservation strategies to effect lasting urban revitalization.

Nicosia, Cyprus, 1192-1570 : architecture, topography and urban experience in a diversified capital city

- This study explores and reiterates the significance carried by the notions of place, multiplicity and experience in the approaches to the study of architecture, in the shaping of cultures, and in the construction of urban (hi)stories and topographies. The research aims to reveal the existence of a transcultural space constituting the cosmos of Nicosia, capital city of the late medieval and renaissance Kingdom of Cyprus. It is argued that the natural and built environment of the city simultaneously witnessed as well as constructed this highly obscure space, whose elusive nature has not been sufficiently or comprehensively researched thus far. The purpose of this study is to unearth numerous attempts at reconciliation by medieval civilizations, and to comprehend their repeated efforts at bringing in parallel existence and understanding adjacent, but seemingly oppositional or even confrontational, cultures and spaces. The method used engages a re-interpretation of Nicosia's urban space by means of a scholarly narrative, defined as a comprehensively annotated telling of citizens' experiences through the city. While maintaining that it is this telling which better exposes the city's character, past findings on the architecture, topography, and urban experience of Nicosia are concurrently examined, some of them accepted and others re-proposed. Different architectural and ethical realities for the city, as well as varied urban and social identities, emerge as possibilities for pondering only after the superimposition of scientific findings on an interweaving web of experiences, on the remarkably phenomenal world of medieval urban space.
