The Harvard Ph.D. in Education trains cutting-edge researchers who work across disciplines to generate knowledge and translate discoveries into transformative policy and practice.

Offered jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Ph.D. in Education provides you with full access to the extraordinary resources of Harvard University and prepares you to assume meaningful roles as university faculty, researchers, senior-level education leaders, and policymakers.

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will collaborate with scholars across all Harvard graduate schools on original interdisciplinary research. In the process, you will help forge new fields of inquiry that will impact the way we teach and learn. The program’s required coursework will develop your knowledge of education and your expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methods needed to conduct high-quality research. Guided by the goal of making a transformative impact on education research, policy, and practice, you will focus on independent research in various domains, including human development, learning and teaching, policy analysis and evaluation, institutions and society, and instructional practice.   

Curriculum Information

The Ph.D. in Education requires five years of full-time study to complete. You will choose your individual coursework and design your original research in close consultation with your HGSE faculty adviser and dissertation committee. The requirements listed below include the three Ph.D. concentrations: Culture, Institutions, and Society; Education Policy and Program Evaluation; and Human Development, Learning and Teaching .

Ph.D. Concentrations and Examples

Summary of Ph.D. Program

Doctoral Colloquia  In year one and two you are required to attend. The colloquia convenes weekly and features presentations of work-in-progress and completed work by Harvard faculty, faculty and researchers from outside Harvard, and Harvard doctoral students. Ph.D. students present once in the colloquia over the course of their career.

Research Apprenticeship The Research Apprenticeship is designed to provide ongoing training and mentoring to develop your research skills throughout the entire program.

Teaching Fellowships The Teaching Fellowship is an opportunity to enhance students' teaching skills, promote learning consolidation, and provide opportunities to collaborate with faculty on pedagogical development.

Comprehensive Exams  The Written Exam (year 2, spring) tests you on both general and concentration-specific knowledge. The Oral Exam (year 3, fall/winter) tests your command of your chosen field of study and your ability to design, develop, and implement an original research project.

Dissertation  Based on your original research, the dissertation process consists of three parts: the Dissertation Proposal, the writing, and an oral defense before the members of your dissertation committee.

Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS) Concentration

In CIS, you will examine the broader cultural, institutional, organizational, and social contexts relevant to education across the lifespan. What is the value and purpose of education? How do cultural, institutional, and social factors shape educational processes and outcomes? How effective are social movements and community action in education reform? How do we measure stratification and institutional inequality? In CIS, your work will be informed by theories and methods from sociology, history, political science, organizational behavior and management, philosophy, and anthropology. You can examine contexts as diverse as classrooms, families, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities, religious institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and more.

Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE) Concentration

In EPPE, you will research the design, implementation, and evaluation of education policy affecting early childhood, K–12, and postsecondary education in the U.S. and internationally. You will evaluate and assess individual programs and policies related to critical issues like access to education, teacher effectiveness, school finance, testing and accountability systems, school choice, financial aid, college enrollment and persistence, and more. Your work will be informed by theories and methods from economics, political science, public policy, and sociology, history, philosophy, and statistics. This concentration shares some themes with CIS, but your work with EPPE will focus on public policy and large-scale reforms.

Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT) Concentration

In HDLT, you will work to advance the role of scientific research in education policy, reform, and practice. New discoveries in the science of learning and development — the integration of biological, cognitive, and social processes; the relationships between technology and learning; or the factors that influence individual variations in learning — are transforming the practice of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether studying behavioral, cognitive, or social-emotional development in children or the design of learning technologies to maximize understanding, you will gain a strong background in human development, the science of learning, and sociocultural factors that explain variation in learning and developmental pathways. Your research will be informed by theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science, sociology and linguistics, philosophy, the biological sciences and mathematics, and organizational behavior.

Ph.D. student recognized for diversity, equity and inclusion efforts

Corinne Hobbs, a third-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Kinesiology , is the recipient of the MSU Council of Graduate Students (COGS) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Award . The award — now in its second year — recognizes graduate-level Spartans who exemplify and actively promote DEI by addressing, challenging or dismantling discrimination, sexism, racism and prejudice within their program, unit or department.

In September 2023, Hobbs formed a podcast listening group for members of the Kinesiology Graduate Student Organization (KGSO) focused on education history and DEI topics in the context of sports. Over the course of the academic year, about half of the graduate students in the department listened to episodes from various DEI-centric podcasts and engaged in meaningful discussions at group meetings.

One podcast highlighted by the group, New York Times’ 1619 Project, explores how slavery has shaped culture in the United States today.

“It sparked a really interesting and honest dialogue in our group,” said Hobbs, who noted the podcast club was nice break from reading and writing for KGSO members. In previous years, KGSO has hosted book clubs. Hobbs was nominated by KGSO President and 2024 Ph.D. graduate Megan Loftin.

Another podcast, Demystifying Diversity, spotlighted issues like race, gender, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status in relation to participation in sports environments.

“We brought people together to talk about really serious issues and it was cool that they truly represented a global community and came together,” said Hobbs.

A passion for people

Hobbs’ scholarly interests lie in the psychosocial aspects of sports, particularly examining the effectiveness of pre-game speeches and how to measure team culture and climate. After completing her master’s degree at Miami University in Ohio, she was inspired to become a Spartan and work with her now advisor, Professor Nicholas Myers – a renowned scholar in the field of sports psychology.

“Working with Corinne has been a truly rewarding experience. Her natural curiosity and eagerness to engage with as many learning and serving possibilities as possible, are infectious,” said Myers. “Corinne embodies the best current qualities, and future aspirations of our great land-grant institution.”  

Hobbs hopes to tackle real-world issues in her career, with a primary focus on individual well-being.

“I want to make sure that my research has a direct impact on the population I’m researching,” she said. “In terms of DEI, it means making sure my research has a holistic, person-centered approach.”

First-generation medical students face unique challenges and need more targeted support

Medical research is increasingly informed by recognition of diversity’s key role in addressing health equity. But when it comes to medical education, there’s a group that has remained not just underrepresented but also under-researched: first-generation (first-gen) medical students — those whose parents have not earned bachelor’s degrees. These students are more likely to be older, identify as racial or ethnic minorities, be immigrants or children of immigrants, or come from low-income families. Along with anecdotal evidence, the minimal previous research indicates that these students face some unique struggles on top of the common challenges most medical students encounter.

“It became clear to me that schools — even the great ones that are intentional and diligent about building diverse classes — are not truly ready to receive first-gen students,” said Catherine Havemann, MD, an emergency medicine chief resident at UChicago Medicine. “Admission isn’t the same as full access to the institution. Sometimes support doesn’t exist, and other times it’s off-target.”

To increase understanding of the first-gen experience and identify opportunities for educators and administrators to provide the most meaningful support, Havemann helped lead a team of researchers to perform an in-depth qualitative study. They analyzed data collected in interviews with a diverse group of medical students recruited from 27 medical schools across the U.S. The results, published in JAMA , have the potential to inform efforts at increasing educational equity at both the institutional and individual level.

Struggles shared amongst a diverse first-gen population

Overall, the study confirmed that first-gen medical students feel that they face disproportionate adversity throughout their education and do not receive the support they need to compensate for that. Participants identified 4 main themes: feelings of isolation and exclusion; difficulties accessing basic resources such as food, rent, transportation and textbooks; a general lack of institutional support; and pressure to rely on personal “grit” and resilience for survival.

Some issues highlighted in the data were relatively unsurprising, such as financial difficulties.

“No matter which subset of first-gen students we talk to, money is a foundational part of the challenges they face — even if they're not technically low-income,” said Havemann, the paper’s first author. “Within the medical community, we need to talk more about the discomfort of disadvantaged students entering incredibly wealthy institutions with mostly wealthy peers. What does it mean to create some basic degree of equity?”

Other issues emerged as more persistent than the researchers had anticipated. For example, interviewees frequently mentioned transportation problems, such as situations where student loans don’t cover the cost of having a car but medical school necessitates one. An especially striking theme was that many students reported being overtly discouraged by mentors or teachers during their education.

“People who meet the criteria for medical school admission are being told ‘This is not for you,’” Havemann said. “It’s disheartening to see, and it makes me think differently about my career as an aspiring educator. Saying ‘Yes’ — even in a small way — to someone who has heard a lifetime of ‘No’ can make all the difference. To think there are people out there discouraging others is frankly appalling.”

Responding to the findings

Havemann said the paper resonated strongly with student communities online following its publication.

“Responses ranged from ‘This is obvious’ and ‘Water is wet’ to ‘Why doesn't my school understand this?’ or "We knew this already — where are the solutions?’” she said.

As a former first-gen student herself, she was struck by the consistency of experience revealed by the study’s results. “It was validating as a researcher but also profoundly validating as a person.”

But while the student response online served as important confirmation that the study’s findings are representative, the real target audience is the educators who have the power to make a difference.

“I would love for them to read this paper and feel what a powerful position they're in to make a more equitable world,” Havemann said. “Even the little things matter a lot.”

Even as she and others conduct more research on this topic, Havemann said institutions can and should already be taking steps to provide better support for first-generation medical students.

“People like to talk about using holistic review in admissions to look at the whole student — we also have to look at holistic support once they enroll,” she said.

Future studies will dive deeper into themes like professional identity formation, financial challenges, burnout and sense of belonging. Now that the qualitative groundwork has been laid, researchers can design more nuanced quantitative and mixed-method studies.

“For example, I’d like to quantify the percentage of first-gen students who are not only trying to support themselves but also keeping the lights on for their parents,” Havemann said. “I think the answers would be gutting.”

Education and Research Centers

• The 18 Education and Research Centers (ERCs) provide high-quality interdisciplinary graduate and post-graduate training in occupational safety and health disciplines.
• ERC faculty and trainees conduct research to advance occupational safety health.
• ERCs serve as resources for our nation's workforce through continuing education and outreach in their region.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 requires NIOSH to provide an adequate supply of qualified personnel to implement it. The 18 NIOSH Education and Research Centers (ERCs) have a key role in meeting this requirement.

ERCs are academic institutions that provide high-quality training, continuing education, and outreach.

Interdisciplinary graduate and post-graduate training

ERCs focus on the core occupational safety and health disciplines of industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine, and occupational safety. Allied disciplines are also offered through many of the ERCs. This includes occupational health psychology, Total Worker Health, mining safety, agricultural safety and health, and ergonomics.

Research training

Research and research training are integral components of ERCs. ERC faculty and trainees conduct research on priorities in the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) and emerging issues.

Continuing education and outreach

ERCs serve as resources for our nation's workforce through continuing education and outreach in their region. ERCs have strong collaborations with professional associations, worker advocacy groups, businesses, industries, and public health agencies.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion

ERCs enhance diversity, equity and inclusion in the safety and health workforce. ERCs work with Minority Serving Institutions and other NIOSH supported training programs to provide opportunities for students and collaborations.

Emergency Response

During the COVID-19 pandemic, ERCs responded rapidly to the needs of students, faculty, and staff at their universities. They shared their expertise with businesses and organizations in their region. They provided guidance on proper use and decontamination of personal protective equipment and respirator fit testing. They also advised on social distancing for worksites and the use of physical protective barriers. Many ERCs developed communication products, resource guides, online courses, and webinars on safe work practices during the pandemic.

ERCs continue to train safety and health practitioners and researchers with the knowledge and skills for emergency preparedness and response. Historically, ERCs have provided expertise in worker health and safety following events such as:

• Hurricanes (Katrina, Maria, and Harvey)
• Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
• Illicit drug exposures to law enforcement and EMS personnel
• Ebola and influenza outbreaks

Future Workforce

NIOSH's network of ERCs is critical in developing professionals prepared to respond to the changing nature of work. New technologies, and the combined pace of automation and globalization, are changing work and workplaces. Employers and workers must navigate issues such as an aging workforce, gender and racial inequalities, and climate change.

The ERCs provide well-trained graduates and professionals who go on to work for:

“How to CAD Almost Anything” IAP course added to MIT OpenCourseWare

This January, AeroAstro PhD student Andy Eskenazi (Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment) taught a course called “How to CAD Almost Anything” during MIT’s Independent Activities Period. Following the course’s success and popularity, it has been added as a free resource to MIT OpenCourseWare. CAD (computer-aided design) software has become a tremendously important tool in design, with wide-ranging applications across engineering, manufacturing, architecture, art, and construction. While many MIT students learn and use CAD in a variety of settings throughout their academic careers, Eskenazi noticed that there was no single dedicated CAD course, and not every student had the opportunity to formally learn to use it. So he decided to create one! Split into nine sessions, “ How to CAD Almost Anything ” introduces CAD using the parametric modeling software SolidWorks, through various fun, hands-on examples focused on reverse engineering. In contrast to traditional mechanical design courses, the course emphasizes the design process itself, understanding how to plan and leverage available tools to arrive at the desired result. 

The OpenCourseWare version includes:

• a course website with session workshop details and instructions for hands-on learning activities
• a companion playlist of session recordings on YouTube
• an “ Instructor Insights ” page with additional details and resources 

“This class has been truly a dream come true, one where I got to be at the front of the classroom sharing my passion for mechanical design and Solidworks with other students,” Eskenazi wrote in a LinkedIn pos t. “But beyond teaching MIT undergrads (and a number of PhDs and postdocs), perhaps my main motivation behind this course has been to develop an open source educational platform, so that anybody could potentially learn how to CAD!”  This semester, Eskenazi taught highschoolers a Fusion 360 version of the class through MIT’s ESP/HSSP program. He’s also running an OnShape version this summer, open to anyone in the MIT community, over the course of eight 2-hour sessions. Graduate Profile: Hannah Eliason, MTS '24

Message of Thanks  

While I would like to thank all of my professors at HDS, there are a couple of professors without whom getting here would not have been possible. I want to thank Mike Delaney for the countless office hours, support, and guidance throughout my entire journey of academic, personal, and vocational growth with the Religion and Public Life Program. I can wholeheartedly say that I am lucky I got to begin and end my time at this institution with such an influential figure in the humanitarian sector. I also want to thank Dr. Healan Gaston for providing me with academic spaces to research more unconventional topics like the Salem Witch Trials, the Lavender Scare, and Trump’s 2017 Muslim Ban. I would also like to thank Shaul Magid for supporting my research and vocational path in Holocaust and genocide public education and research. 

Finally, I want to thank my undergraduate advisor and mentor, Dr. Damon Berry at St. Lawrence University. My journey in religious studies began during college on the first day of Damon’s “Cults and New Religious Movements” course in the spring of 2018. Little did I know then, but this was the beginning of my trajectory towards HDS, a path I never would have considered previously. Thank you for all the short notice mentoring sessions, your unwavering support, and for being one of my biggest academic/vocational cheerleaders! 

What I Hope to Be Remembered By 

Vocationally, I hope to be remembered as an advocate for a world of just peace through my commitment to fighting social injustice against state violence and the rise of authoritarianism. On a personal level, I hope people remember me for being unapologetically myself, remembering my infectious laugh, smile, and hospitality – the watercolor memories scattered with joy, hope, solidarity, and forgiveness. 

Future Plans 

Following graduation, I plan on staying in New England for a couple of months, spending the summer reconnecting with nature and recentering my mind, body, and soul. I will continue my role as a facilitator with Amideast’s Qisasna Program (an intercultural, virtual exchange program), connecting American undergraduate students with Yemeni undergraduate students to find common ground, build podcasting skills, and foster friendships. It is my belief that programs such as these will lead peace-building efforts for future generations.
