Qualitative research has been considered capable of studying complex situation, yielding rich findings and particularly suitable when involving human subject. Purpose Qualitative researchers are often confronted with a dilemma of selecting an appropriate approach within which to situate their research. This has led to successive attempts by qualitative researchers in the built environment (BE) to combine two dominant approaches – deductive and inductive; in the conduct of their inquiry. Such attempts can be traced to the poor comprehension of the abductive approach. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the principles of the abductive approach and illustrate its applicability within the context of BE qualitative research. Design/methodology/approach In this study, an illustrative case study is used to depict the usefulness of the abductive approach in BE research. The case relied upon is a recently completed study of an infrastructure delivery system and an assessment of the system’s ability to deliver on socio-economic sustainability objectives. ISSN # 1938 7806. _________________________________ With an acceptance rate that does not exceed 25% of the total papers and articles submitted to the journal, IJAR – International Journal of Architectural Research is moving forward to position itself among the leading journals in architecture and urban studies worldwide. As this is the case since the beginning of volume 5, issue 1, March 2011, one must note that the journal has been covered by several data and index bases since its inception including Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, EBSCO-Current Abstracts-Art and Architecture, INTUTE, Directory of Open Access Journals, Pro-Quest, Scopus-Elsevier and many university library databases across the globe. This is coupled with IJAR being an integral part of the archives and a featured collection of ArchNet and the Aga Khan Documentation Centre at MIT: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. In 2014, IJAR was included in Quartile 2 / Q2 list of Journals both in ‘Architecture’ and ‘Urban Studies.’ As of May 2015, IJAR is ranked 23 out of 83 journals in ‘Architecture’ and 59 out of 119 in ‘Urban Studies.’ Rankings are based on the SJR (SCImago Journal Ranking); an Elsevier- SCOPUS indicator that measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal. Most research universities require some combination of standardized classroom teaching and independent research as part of a post-graduate level plan of study. Increasingly construction management, construction technology, architecture, and related programmes that award degrees related to the built environment (BE) are awarding post-graduate degrees. Frequently these degrees, unlike traditional engineering degrees which test theory from a quantitative or positivist position, relate to issues that are more difficult to measure using strictly quantifiable metrics. Because the managerial issues faced by these graduates deal with human interaction and behaviour, research in the BE often resembles social science research to a greater degree than traditional scientific research. The award of the first doctorate degree in the University of Paris in the twelfth century has led to the creation of different doctoral programmes in different universities in Europe, America and around the world. The doctorate degree has been held as the highest and most prestigious academic award. Most popular of such degrees is the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) which allows a close research-based focus on the candidate’s chosen subject area to gain more expertise in the area. Other form of doctorate have emerged since the first half of the twentieth century known as professional doctorates. The professional doctorate is a combination of both research project and research training with taught components or modules. These candidates are usually based at their work place or non-academic environment where they try to make a contribution to professional knowledge. This exist in different areas or disciplines. While this paper makes mention of the different professional doctorate programmes, it duel much on the professional doctorate in built environment abbreviated as DBEnv or DBE which have being emerging in the recent past. In the United Kingdom (UK), the term built environment have been used to denote different range of practice - oriented disciplines such as Management, Economics, Law, Technology and Design. Scientist understanding of the built environment have undergone several changes with regards to different areas or discipline. This has led to the emergence of different definitions of the built environment from different disciplines or areas such as the social science, landscape architecture and public health. Some of the definition such as that of Griffiths (2004) is considered as not making any reference to the theoretical qualities of its knowledge base but it is rather limited to areas of professional practice within the built environment at undergraduate and master’s levels. This paper explodes how universities are carrying out more research within the built environment at doctoral level to complement its professional practice with knowledge base with theoretical qualities. Knowledge and knowledge production within the professional doctorate in built environment is done both tacitly and explicitly. There have been the question if there is a need for a theory in built environment. Different theories have been postulated using different approaches. This has led to a search of a unified theory within the built environment. Van de Ven and Poole (2005), acknowledged the ambiguity and complex problems in the built environment research and called for a multi-paradigmatic research to address such problems. As a result of arguments raised by different authors about a unified theory in construction management research, Raftery et al. (1997) advocate the need of bringing different paradigms to allow a more unified approach to analysing the complex nature of the built environment.

Researchers within the built environment disciplines have increasingly drawn on a plurality of social methods in order to enrich their research. Three decades down the line the place of philosophy in the choice of appropriate research methods is yet to be appreciated by some built environment researchers. Purpose – Following the successful transition ofArchnet-IJAR to Emerald, the introduction of new process and editorial teams, and the production of the first issue last March (Volume 13, Issue 1), the purpose of this paper is to outline key aspects of the contributions published in this edition of Archnet-IJAR: International Journal of Architectural Research, Volume 13, Issue 1, July 2019. Design/methodology/approach – Premised on two generic understandings of built environment research: conceptual frameworks and experimental fieldworks, a classification of topical contents and an identification of approaches within the studies published in this edition, a narrative on evolving interests and themes is developed to outline these undertakings. Findings – Five themes are identified from 13 papers contributed by 27 researchers from academic institutions in 13 countries and territories. Themes include: complexity and prosperity of informal settlements and slums; east–west dialectics of environmental design research and sustainable urbanism; educating future built environment professionals; grassroots research and design strategies; and performance, perception and behavior. Originality/value – Understanding and appreciating various research approaches for unveiling key aspects of built environment realities including the spatial and social dimensions would facilitate effective contributions in architectural and urban research. This is coupled with the advancing thematic aspects that enthuse a re-thinking of the key purpose of architectural and urban research while stimulating future research endeavors.

About the author.

Emmanuel Manu is an Associate Professor in Quantity Surveying and Project Management at the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, Nottingham Trent University. He has supervised and examined several doctoral research projects in construction project management and engages in research consultancy, both in the UK and internationally. His research interests span the areas of construction supply chain management, circular economy in the built environment, sustainable procurement and social value, and smart and digital processes for performance improvement in the built environment. He has collaborated with industry partners to deliver research and consultancy projects totalling over £9m, with two notable projects being on implementing Cradle to Cradle® principles (sustainability paradigm) in the built environment and the other on supply chain performance improvement. He is a member of the Association for Project Management and a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy.

Julius Akotia is a senior lecturer in Construction Project Management at the school of Architecture, Computing and Engineering (ACE), University of East London (UEL). He is also the link coordinator for the ACE academic ‘international partnership’ BSc Construction Management programmes with AMC metropolitan college in Greece, Kazan State University of Architecture and Engineering (KSUAE) in Russia, and Ain Shams University (ASU) in Egypt. He has supervised several undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorial students and played external examiner role for national and international institutions. He is a chartered member of Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB) and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His research interests lie in the area of sustainability, with a focus on the social and economic sustainability aspects of sustainable regeneration. He has published over 18 peer-reviewed research papers in local and international conferences and academic journals.
