Common Questions
What is the circle license.
The cIRcle Non-exclusive Distribution License gives cIRcle permission to make your work openly available in UBC’s institutional repository for future generations.
The cIRcle License also lets you choose which Creative Commons License terms to add to your work. This helps others know how to share and re-use your content with proper attribution.
What if I’m submitting as part of a group?
You can complete one Item Submission Form on behalf of your group. Be sure to add your group member and instructor email addresses in the form so everyone receives a copy.
How long will the submission take?
Once we receive the instructor approval form and a complete submission form, we will deposit your work in cIRcle. We will also email a link to your item in Open Collections within 7-10 business days.
Missing information, copyright, or privacy concerns will delay your submission.

Dissertation & Thesis Formatting Frequently Asked Questions
By Allan Cho on July 30, 2020
[Updated August 1, 2020]
The following are frequently asked questions regarding dissertation and thesis formatting. We provide the following information as further support to answering commonly asked questions.
Using memos in the body of a thesis. I am not aware of any UBC-specific formatting rules for memos. In other words, the UBC Grad Studies page has rules for block quotes but not for other things like memos. What about consistency? What about “complete memos” at the end of the thesis as appendices, but a shortened memo as a block paragraph in one of her chapters. Is this permissible?
- APA has its own rules about writing memos, so this is a grey area where citation style may/may not affect formatting in the thesis
- Please check with your department supervisor and also with previous dissertations/theses in your area of research for examples and best practices
Are there any formatting rules for creating captions for images/tables/figures that are in appendices? And is it a requirement to have these captions included in the Table of images/tables/figures of a thesis?
- No, there are no specific rules for captions in the appendices
- Appendices must be limited to supporting material genuinely subsidiary to the main argument of the thesis. They must only include material that is referred to in the thesis.
- The following are appropriate for inclusion in the appendices:
- Additional details of methodology and/or data.
- Diagrams of specialized equipment developed.
- Copies of questionnaires or surveys used in the research.
How does citation style its impact paragraph spacing? In my thesis, there is a space between every new section, sub-section, et cetera. But how would this change if a student is required to follow a very specific citation format? (e.g. APA format in the thesis).
- APA recommends no additional spaces between the start of new paragraphs/sections
- As a recommendation, you can go to Open Collections [ https://open.library.ubc.ca/cIRcle/collections/ubctheses ], and find recent previous submissions from your department.
If you are still unsure, please contact your supervisor/advisor
What is the main distinction between th e Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G&PS) p re-review service and the RC Thesis Formatting service?
- G+PS offers a general review to see if you’re on the right path with very general guidelines; it won’t answer any specific questions about formatting or other services
- RC service will help refer you to correct resources for more nuanced questions (e.g. Copyright, ethics approval, etc.)
- RC provides a pre-formatted dissertation template for you to populate with your content
- RC provides support using this template
- RC offers one-on-one consultations for specific questions on your template
What is the turn-around time for G&PS pre-reviews?
- According to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G&PS), it is 2-weeks.
What are the deadlines for Dissertation and Thesis Formatting submission?
- For most updated deadlines, go here: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/deadlines?type=deadline&deadline_type=571
Do I have the option to embargo my work?
Yes, all information about delaying and embargo of your thesis/dissertation can be found on G+PS – https://www.grad.ubc.ca/current-students/final-dissertation-thesis-submission/delaying-publication-your-thesis
If I am an undergraduate student, should I still be using the Thesis Formatting template even though it seems to be intended for graduate students? Are there any formatting differences between an undergraduate thesis and a graduate thesis?
- Each undergraduate department may have its own specifications. As undergraduates fall outside of the Faculty of Graduate + Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS), please contact your own department
- The Institutional Repository (cIRcle) has an archive of previous undergraduate theses with information on submission – https://circle.ubc.ca/submissions/submit-content/undergraduate/#fragment-5c201678217a9eeb6fca4f2cf24394f9-0
I found that in the thesis template, Chapter 1 doesn’t start at page 1 after the roman numerals. I hope you can help me with this. It might be a problem with the Table of Content. I am using the UBC thesis template.
- For your pagination issue, you can start with the two guides:
- How to guide: PC (p.2) Mac (p.2)
- Thesis Template User’s Guide: PC (p.4) Mac (p.4)
I have an issue with converting my thesis into a PDF. Some of the words (e.g. chapter headings in the table of contents and sub-section numbers) become blurry in the pdf format of the file.
- The “blurriness” is indeed some sort of font formatting, and you can clear it as follows. In the document, for each numbering level, click to select the number and press Ctrl+SpaceBar; this should revert font formatting to that of the underlying paragraph style. Resource from: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-word/list-number-blurry-multilevel-list/ddd957aa-d531-4711-88e2-66fd4d7594fc
- The problem can be the PDF converter program. Sometimes, the PDF converter program may need to be reinstalled on the computer. Try it again after reinstallation.
I need to create sub-sections in my Appendix C (e.g., C.2.1, C.4.1.1), but I don’t know how to do that. The UBC Research Commons template seems to only program to Heading 8.
Secondly, I also don’t know why the figure name sequence does not work in Appendices.
- First, Copy the template caption into Appendix B as it shows Figure 0.1.
- Second, Right click the “0” choosing “edit field” and then change the file properties to Heading 7 (this is the heading level for appendices in the template).
- Third, right-click the “1” choosing “edit field”. The original field code is “SEQFigure \* ARABIC \s 2 “, the 2 after \s resets the sequence after each Heading 2, but appendices are under Heading 7.
- Fourth, change the whole code to “SEQFigure \* ARABIC \s 7 “
- Lastly, update the table of figures
- ** Remember to separate each figure/table with its own page so that the Table of Contents will reflect these new sub-appendices

CPEN/ELEC 499
Undergraduate thesis.
This course is intended as a vehicle to provide undergraduate students with research experience. Students can take on a research effort for 3 credits or for 6 credits. The undergraduate thesis typically can be used to satisfy technical elective requirements. This document summarizes some of the procedures for this course and is intended as a guide for students and faculty members.
Who is eligible to register for CPEN/ELEC 499?
Students with excellent academic qualifications (typically an average of 80% or A-) can register for an undergraduate thesis after finding a suitable research advisor (a faculty member in ECE). In special cases, students not meeting the suggested minimum grade may register for EECE 496 when the research advisor provides suitable justification.
What are the procedures for registering and completing CPEN/ELEC 499?
- Undergraduate students interested in gaining research experience must find a research advisor and discuss their eligibility for the undergraduate thesis as well as potential research topics.
- Typically the undergraduate thesis should be taken for 3 credits. The 6-credit version of the course should be chosen only under exceptional circumstances with strong justification from the research advisor.
- The 3-credit undergraduate thesis should be completed over the course of one academic term. It is possible for the 6-credit version to span two terms.
- Whereas the research work and the grading are the responsibility of the research advisor, the Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs will ensure that the appropriate procedures are followed and that documentation is maintained for the thesis effort (including justifications for deviations from the norm.)
- Register in the waitlist for either the 3-credit or the 6-credit version of the course;
- Submit a registration request by sending an email to [email protected] with information about: the research advisor, the proposed research topic, and the number of credits of work.
- The Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs will seek confirmation from the research advisor and obtain the necessary justifications (if needed), and the student will be moved from the waitlist to the regular list.
- After registration is complete, the student and the advisor can pursue the research effort in a mutually acceptable manner.
- The thesis should be completed by the last day of regular classes of the appropriate term. Successful completion of the thesis should be accompanied by the submission of a suitable manuscript describing the research effort. This manuscript should be made available via UBC ciRCle. In particular, this should be done for all theses that are awarded a grade of B- or higher. (See the next point for grading guidance.)
- A+ (95%) : outstanding work that exceeds expectations;
- A (88%) : research work of high quality that suggests a high probability of success in a graduate program;
- A- (83%) : research work of high quality that meets expectations and suggests the possibility of success in a graduate program;
- B+ (78%) : research work that meets expectations but suggests that the student may need additional support and effort to succeed in a graduate program;
- B (73%) : research work that is adequate at the undergraduate level but does not reflect the standards that may be expected of someone entering graduate school;
- B- (70%), C (60%), F : varying levels of work that does not meet expectations as deemed appropriate by the research advisor with suitable justification.
- The research advisor should submit a grade by sending an email to [email protected] within two weeks of the last day of regular instruction. This email should include a link to the thesis manuscript on UBC ciRCle (if applicable).
- The Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs will submit the grade to UBC Student Services after the grade recommendation is received from the research advisor.

Guided Independent Learning Opportunities
LFS offers many ways for you to deepen your academic experience. If you’re a 3rd- or 4th-year student wishing to clearly demonstrate competency and mastery of your major, or if you just want to enrich your degree with a unique learning opportunity, this page is for you. These opportunities are engineered to help you transition from being a student to the next step in your career, whether that’s graduate studies or a smooth entry into the working world.
Undergraduate Thesis
If you’re particularly keen on research or intend to pursue a research-intensive graduate program, you are encouraged to consider completing an undergraduate thesis (available in both the FNH and APBI programs, these courses are numbered 499). The undergraduate thesis gives you an opportunity to work closely with a faculty member, with the material at an advanced level. This project may be of your own design, or it may be part of your supervisor’s ongoing research. Working on an undergraduate thesis ill give you an idea of what it’s like to work at the graduate level focusing in depth on a single topic. It will also give you the opportunity to practice and apply your skills in experimental design, data collection and data analysis. And just like a graduate-level thesis, it will equip you with experience in academic writing and oral presentation. You are encouraged to present your work at the UBC Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC) and in exceptional cases, you may even be able to submit your work for publication in a peer reviewed journal.
If you are in the Honours program for your degree, the undergraduate thesis may be required.
The thesis isn’t for everyone; of the independent study options, the thesis is the most challenging. If you have an interest in research, but are not committed to this level of engagement, consider a Directed Studies – see below!
Credit value:
All undergraduate thesis courses are worth 6 credits, which means they require a significant investment of time and passion.
Registration and thesis approval process:
You will need a strong academic foundation to be considered for an undergrad thesis. It is your responsibility to find an academic supervisor for your thesis, so start looking early! You should contact your designated program advisor for your major (see below for quick links) as well as the individual faculty member(s) with whom you are interested in conducting a project. Do this well in advance of the start of the academic term. We strongly encourage you to start looking at least 4 months in advance of when you would want to be registered in this course. For example, you should approach potential supervisors in the summer regarding projects which would begin in September. Opportunities for conducting projects are limited.
To learn more about expectations and timelines:
- Details about FNH 499
- Details about APBI 499
If you have questions about the undergraduate thesis, you are encouraged to talk to the program advisor for your major to discuss how to include a thesis within your program requirements.
Examples of past and/or current student thesis projects:
- Does information about dairy cow housing affect the public’s trust in farmers and their milk purchasing intentions?
- Predictive factors of release, euthanasia and mortality in rehabilitated harbor seals
- Factors for Academic Achievement – looking at a sense of belonging, course interest and wellbeing in undergraduate students
- Optimizing and characterizing sour dough starter culture in unconventional doughs
Undergraduate Essay
Available in the APBI program only, the undergraduate essay (course number: APBI 498) allows you to complete a comprehensive analysis of the peer-reviewed literature of an approved topic under the supervision of a faculty member. Unlike the Undergraduate Thesis, the essay does not require you to conduct original research. If you take this route, you will typically complete your essay in a single term in the final year of your program. The topic is normally determined together with your supervisor.
Students normally enroll in either the Undergraduate Thesis or the Undergraduate Essay, not both. In exceptional cases, students may do both, and this would require approval from their supervisor.
Undergraduate essay courses are worth 3 credits, and require a significant investment of time and passion.
Registration and essay approval process:
It is your responsibility to find an academic supervisor for your undergraduate essay, so start looking early! Get in touch with your designated program advisor for your major as well as the individual faculty member(s) with whom you are interested in conducting a project well in advance of the beginning of the academic term. We strongly encourage you to start looking at least 4 months in advance of when you would want to be registered in this course. For example, you should approach potential supervisors in the summer regarding essay topics which would start in September.
If you have questions about the undergraduate essay, please contact the Program Coordinator for the Applied Biology program. They can help you assess how this option could fit within your program requirements.
Examples of past and/or current student essays:
- Improving and refining euthanasia methods for rodents used in research
- Rhizoremediation as an alternative approach to treat polluted soils: A review
The Applied Biology Practicum (APBI 496) and LFS Career Development Practicum (LFS 496) are ways for you to gain practical experience in your field of study. In these courses, you work alongside on-site mentors (which could include academic faculty, industry or community partners), to develop skills and knowledge in a particular field. This is hands-on learning in its true sense! Each of these courses is supervised by a faculty member.
For the APBI Practicum, the number of placements available each term is limited. You cannot register yourself –you must apply and be accepted. To review the course syllabus, and current practicum opportunities, go here .
The LFS Career Development Practicum (LFS 496) is open to students in all programs and an excellent opportunity for you to earn credits while being engaged with a mentor in a local company whose business is food system related. You can also get your hands dirty with existing projects at the UBC Farm. Many of these projects include the opportunity to conduct original research with supervision. Check out the listings of all available practicums and timelines for applications at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm . You can also use your own connections to find a company for your placement.
You can earn a maximum of 6 credits from your practicum, either as one 6-credit option or two 3-credit projects.
Registration and approval process:
For LFS 496: You can apply for practicums in February, July and November for practicums that start in May, September and January, respectively.
- APBI 496: please contact the Program Coordinator for the Applied Biology program.
- LFS 496: Get in touch with your designated program advisor for your major to see how the practicum can fit in your program of study, or please contact Veronik Campbell , Community Engaged Education and Partnerships.
Directed Studies
Directed studies credits (courses numbered 497) are available across all four undergraduate programs (GRS, FRE, FNH and APBI). In directed studies, you will work on a one-to-one basis with a faculty mentor on an academic project. The Directed Studies incorporates elements of the Thesis and a Practicum.
Directed Studies allow for flexibility and for you to delve more deeply in to a topic of interest to you. While similar to the Thesis and Essay, Directed Studies do not require a research component. Your final report will give you valuable experience with scientific writing — and you may get to hone your public speaking skills with an oral presentation.
When your project is industry-sponsored and might contain or generate proprietary information, the final report will not be a public document, as is the case with the thesis or essay.
You will be required to prepare a proposal with your academic supervisor with clear learning outcomes and rubric for evaluation that must be signed off by your program advisor.
Normally, directed studies courses are normally worth 3 or 6 credits, but it’s possible to also pursue a 2-credit version.
Registration and directed studies approval process:
It is your responsibility to find an academic supervisor for your directed studies. If you’re planning to undertake directed studies, start seeking an academic supervisor well ahead of when you want to begin. You should contact your designated program advisor as well as the individual faculty member(s) with whom you are interested in conducting a project, well in advance of the beginning of the academic term. We strongly encourage you to start looking at least 4 months in advance of when you would want to be registered in this course. For example, you should approach potential supervisors in the beginning of the summer regarding projects which would start in September. Opportunities for conducting projects are limited.
- Details about FNH 497
- Details about APBI 497
If you have questions about directed studies, you are encouraged to talk to your program advisor to discuss how directed studies could fit within your program requirements. Not sure who your program advisor is? It will be listed on the webpage for your major.

Orientalism for a Superpower? Theorizing a New Orientalism for 21st Century China by Qiu Guan
Despite China’s recent ascendancy to a world superpower and its rapid economic and technological development, several writers have referred to discourse on China as ‘Orientalist’. There seems to be a fundamental mismatch between Edward Said’s 1978 articulation of Orientalism as seeing the Orient as backwards, static, and inferior with the modern conditions of China.
This paper attempts to provide a provisional understanding of what this ‘New Orientalism’ is. Drawing on the work of Edward Said and Michel Foucault, it traces new Orientalist discourse on China to its pre-19th century origins, noting the ways discourse has both changed and remained the same. By exploring changes in discourse that arise out of China’s increasing claims to economic and technological power, an idea of discourse on China moving towards objectivity is challenged.
Rather, discourse seems to be mediated in the West’s own self-construction by making China its lagging opposite and reinforcing Western claims to a ‘normal’, universal development. To cope with China’s changing material circumstances, New Orientalist rhetoric has shifted to a concentration on China’s moral lagging to characterize its inferiority to the West.
This thesis aims to fill a knowledge gap in the diaspora studies scholarship by evaluating the impact of the diaspora strategies of the full member states of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on the Caribbean Canadian diaspora. It employs a mixed-methods approach that includes a survey of ten Caribbean diasporans from across Canada and eight semi-structured interviews with this same group of diasporans.
Through these methods, the study provides insights into 1) diasporans levels of economic, political and cultural engagement with their home countries; 2) the ways in which Caribbean Canadians engage with their countries of origin; 3) the barriers to engagement faced by diasporans and 4) the ways in which the diaspora strategies of CARICOM governments could be improved.
The findings from this study point to a strong desire from the diaspora to remain more engaged with the region, despite the barriers they face in doing so (such as a lack of awareness of existing diaspora strategies and political and economic stability of home countries). The thesis also makes recommendations on how Caribbean diaspora engagement strategies could be improved.
Transcending Political Dissonances: Music as an Instrument of Diplomacy by Uno Kakegawa
While the intersection of music and politics has garnered some attention in scholarly discourse, the role of instrumental music as a soft power tool in diplomacy remains underexamined. This thesis bridges this gap by exploring the transformative capacity of instrumental music in influencing socio-political norms and international relations in both state sponsored and non-state sponsored contexts.
Using a critical aesthetic approach that synthesizes Adorno’s understanding of music and Said’s concept of “the Other”, my research examines the powerful potential of music as a diplomatic tool. To further my analysis, I adopt a mixed-methods approach to apply my theoretical framework to two case studies: the state-sponsored American Jazz Ambassadors and the non-state-sponsored West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. These examples demonstrate how music can operate as an agent of cultural exchange and foster understanding among politically divided groups, ultimately shaping socio-political norms and influencing power dynamics.
By transcending cultural and linguistic boundaries, instrumental music emerges as a unique artistic medium that facilitates cross-cultural exchange and transforms the diplomatic landscape. My analysis and findings demonstrate the multifaceted nature of musical diplomacy and contribute to an in-depth understanding of international relations and soft power discourse. Consequently, my research advances the existing literature by integrating critical aesthetic theory into contemporary diplomatic practices and analyzing how instrumental music can be utilized as a diplomatic tool for societal transformation and cross-cultural dialogue.
Transforming Perceptions: The Role of Perspective-Taking in the Canadian Policy Context by Eylul Kara
This study investigates the role of empathy and perspective-taking in shaping policy support toward oil and gas pipelines in Canada, with an applicable focus on the Trans Mountain Pipeline (TMX) project. Conducted through an online survey experiment with 442 participants, the study examines the influence of a perspective-taking exercise on policy support and political behaviour.
By prompting participants to imagine themselves in the situation of those directly impacted by Canadian pipeline policies, this research aims to assess the potential of empathy, induced through perspective-taking, to foster a more inclusive approach to policy evaluation. The results indicate that perspective-taking significantly decreased the likelihood of support for pipeline policies. However, it did not have a significant effect on participants' willingness to engage in actions like signing a petition against the TMX expansion to the Canadian government.
The study further revealed that participants who underwent the perspective taking exercise reported higher levels of emotional intensity (concern, sympathy, anger, activism), which in turn, significantly correlated with a decrease in policy support. In this context, emotional response is understood as an important mechanism between perspective taking and changes in policy support, suggesting a need for further research on their impact on policy attitudes and behaviors.
Why (New) Institutions Resist Gendered Change: A Feminist Institutionalist Study on Resistance to Gender Equality in South Korea by Christy Lim
Building upon contemporary trends in feminist institutionalist (FI) thinking that address how institutions serve as sites of resistance to gender-positive movements, my paper examines how informal institutions (unwritten norms, practices, and beliefs) can obstruct formal efforts to improve gender inequality, often in subtle and less overt ways. I am particularly interested in the case of South Korea, where divisive and symbolic discourses on gender issues are prevalent in political campaigns, legislative debates, and even formal policy language. They harbor ambiguous and contested notions of gender equality, particularly concerning what it means specifically in the national context, who its intended beneficiaries are, and who is included/excluded from protection.
Notably, I apply Fiona Mackay's (2014) concept of “nested newness” to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, to analyze how political rhetoric shapes the ministry's functions and legitimacy according to different political agendas. Moreover, I find that ideological-discursive tensions surrounding the terms “gender” and “sex” equality in Korea illustrate how intersecting inequalities are perpetuated and reproduced by resistance actors’ conflicting interests. Furthermore, through a case study of national gender quotas that developed against the backdrop of soft international mandates, I contend that the term, “women's representation” frequently used in formal policy language, remains inadequately defined and growingly susceptible to resistance driven by a new norm that prioritizes meritocracy.
Dasein Beyond Humanity: A Heideggerian Justice for Non-Human Animals by Micah Matsuno
This thesis critically reevaluates Martin Heidegger's concept of Dasein, expanding its scope to include non-human animals (NHAs), thereby challenging the deep-seated anthropocentrism prevalent in contemporary philosophical and political theories. Traditional frameworks typically confine justice and moral consideration to humans, characterized by their capacity for rational thought and public reasoning, thereby excluding NHAs from discussions of rights and justice.
Drawing on Heidegger’s existential analytics, this work argues that NHAs, much like humans, experience Being-in-the-world and Being-towards-death, which are central to Heidegger’s definition of Dasein. This recognition pushes the boundaries of conventional justice systems that overlook the complex lives and intrinsic value of NHAs. By proposing a model of interspecies justice that acknowledges NHAs as active participants in their existential projects, this thesis advocates for a radical restructuring of ethical frameworks to accommodate the authentic modes of being of all sentient creatures. It suggests a shift from viewing NHAs as passive subjects within human-centric practices to recognizing their distinct existences and modes of being, thus calling for justice practices that genuinely respect and uphold the authenticity of all forms of life.
The Alienated Albertan: Regional Populism and Subject Formation in Alberta, Canada by Anya McKercher
In this thesis, I ask: How should we understand the recent resurgence of regional populism in Alberta? Within this issue, I am interested in the intersecting cases of the election of Danielle Smith, the Alberta Sovereignty Act, Take Back Alberta (TBA), as well as the broader trend of an increase in anti-establishment populism, in which being “Albertan” is considered an important political identity, with connotations of being pro-oil and gas, pro-free market, anti-environmentalist, anti-intellectual, and anti-Ottawa.
To understand this phenomenon, I begin by briefly defining Alberta’s regional populism and establishing it as a phenomenon that has had an impact on Albertan politics, with a marked resurgence in recent years. From the literature, I identify a dominant explanation that highlights Western alienation and reliance on fossil fuels as significant forces driving this surge. While I find the insights from this work to be helpful – or even crucial –– in making sense of why Alberta’s populism has taken on some of its idiosyncrasies, I find that this explanation leaves much unanswered. Specifically, I find a gap in the literature regarding the ideational and discursive role which power has played in the emergence of this movement. As such, I further existing analysis by highlighting the influence of dominant paradigms on understanding of what it means to be Albertan. Specifically, I understand these paradigms to be sites of power –– both upheld by and upholding existing hierarchies and modes of governance.
In other words, building off existing literature, I argue that we must go beyond highlighting the idiosyncrasies of the province in isolation. Instead, I assert that Alberta's regional populism is best understood in the context of neoliberalism and petro-hegemony, as political rationales that are on the one hand dominant in the province, but on the other hand, increasingly face challenges and instability. As such, in developing my analysis I draw on a variety of critical theorists, putting them in conversation with authors who have examined political and spatial imaginaries in Alberta. I then go on to analyze the recent developments in Alberta politics related to regional populism, to both support my theory and provide further analysis. Ultimately, I conclude that the province's regional populism can be more thoroughly understood with an eye towards hegemony and its impact of subject formation, and that this lens offers valuable insights in how we can effectively engage in counter-hegemony.
Charting Climate Discourses: The Power of Ideas and the Role of SIDS in Crafting the 1.5°C Norm in International Climate Negotiations by Logane Rolland
The 2015 Paris Agreement marked a significant milestone in global climate negotiations, establishing a commitment to limit global warming to below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This research focuses on Small Island Developing States’ (SIDS) advocacy for the 1.5°C target within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) leading up to the agreement. Despite traditional international relations literature often overlooking small states’ power, emerging constructivist scholarship underscores SIDS’ critical impact in climate negotiations through normative power. Accordingly, this study investigates how SIDS strategically contributed to the construction and diffusion of the 1.5°C goal as a norm, reframing climate discourse within the UNFCCC.
Drawing on norm diffusion literature and frame theory, I argue that they played a significant role in advocating for the 1.5°C goal as an international norm. This claim is supported by a qualitative examination of SIDS' contribution to the UNFCCC from 2007 until 2015, using content analysis on daily Conference of Parties newsletters, along with SIDS’ submissions to climate change conferences. I find that, by leveraging their moral leadership, climate vulnerabilities, and invoking scientific evidence, SIDS effectively influenced negotiations leading up to the 1.5°C target adoption in 2015. These findings are complemented by a discourse analysis of the framings used by SIDS in their coalitions’s statements. By shedding light on SIDS' contribution to constructing and disseminating the 1.5°C norm, this study demonstrates their transformative impact in shaping the current normative dialogue and foundation around the 1.5°C norm in climate governance.

Despite the IMF setting benchmarks to increase staffing diversity, recent IMF staffing compositions still need to be more researched. This thesis investigates the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) expanded role in climate change, focusing on how the nationality compositions of secretariat staff interact with climate-related economic assessments. This explores the internal dynamics of international organizations, adding to the theoretical and empirical research exploring theory and observations of staff member nationality’s influence in agenda orientations and organization authority enhancements. The findings reveal a modest increase in staff shares from climate-vulnerable states, occurring in tandem with climate integration. This study contributes to the literature on international organizations by identifying that the emergence of climate integration at the IMF was likely not influenced by changes in secretariat staffing compositions, and sets a foundation for future analysis of IMF authority enhancing processes.
A Typical Canadian Constitutional Story: The Mechanization of the Notwithstanding Clause as a Tool for Decentralization by Siavash Salamatian
The individual rights override provision (the notwithstanding clause) included in the 1982, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms had traditionally been viewed as a mechanism that outside of Quebec was too politically costly to use. This understanding of the clause has rapidly shifted in recent years with provincial leaders having musings about a more frequent use of the clause. This paper employs a mixed-methods approach in its study.
I first measured public opinion since 1988 on who Canadians believe should adjudicate Charter disputes. I then employ an original theoretical table to compare the discourse of the drafters of the 1982 Constitution with the current provincial leaders who have used the clause to track changes on how permissive elites believe a use of the notwithstanding clause should be and for what uses it can be invoked. Finally, to empirically test whether a ‘federalism’ use of the clause is actually reflected in public opinion, I identified several invocations of the clause and tested provincial sentiments towards those particular issues in comparison to the national values.
Ultimately, I find that there is increasing trust in the provinces over the federal government; elite discourse suggests that there is now a more permissive understanding of using the clause for federalism purposes; and when the clause is invoked there is a difference in preferences between that province and the rest of Canada. However, the findings of the last theory may not be entirely due to provincial differences. The key contribution of this research is to look at the notwithstanding clause as a mechanism that is being used to express provincial differences in the federation, rather than solely a political choice to avoid accountability.
The News about the News: Exploring the Impact of Meta’s Social Media News Ban on the Quality and Quantity of Online News in Canada by Henry Waatainen
Little has been written about the effects that social media news bans (SMNBs) have on journalism and, as a potential consequence, democracy. This paper provides an initial assessment of whether SMNBs—in particular, those that are isolated to specific countries and social media platforms—incentivize online news organizations to shift their publication patterns in ways that could be detrimental to citizen participation in democracy.
More specifically, an original dataset of Canadian newspaper headlines from before and after Meta’s 2023 SMNB is analyzed for correlations between the existence of an SMNB and the amount of sensationalized and foreign news published. The results indicate no observable effect on either outcome. Therefore, this study does not find that SMNBs pose significant consequences for the quality and quantity of domestic journalism in the sample examined. However, further research is necessary in order to determine what broader impact such bans may have on individuals’ capacity to make informed democratic decisions.

The Undergraduate Thesis course provides an opportunity for students to gain experience independently by undertaking research in her or his area of interest. It allows students to integrate the abilities, skills, and knowledge acquired during undergraduate studies. It is open to students with 90 credit hours who are declared majors in mathematics and statistics with a minimum cumulative GPA 3.00 and who have identified a thesis supervisor. Working under the guidance of a faculty member (the thesis supervisor) students design, execute, and analyze research on an issue, problem or concept within the area of mathematics, statistics, or with a primary focus on mathematical or statistical techniques. This thesis option is primarily intended for students contemplating graduate studies or pursuing a career in research. As undergraduate theses are highly individual, the time commitment to the undergraduate thesis cannot be precisely defined. Students bring different levels of experience, knowledge, and abilities to problems that can vary widely in difficulty. However, depending on the phase of the project, students should expect to spend up to 12-15 hours per week on this course. Similarly, the amount of time thesis supervisors need to spend with each student will also fluctuate based on the individual student, thesis topic, and the phase of the thesis, with between 2-4 hours per week often necessary to provide the student with direction, deadlines, supervision, and constructive criticism. Some undergraduate theses may be of such high quality that the student may wish to submit a paper for publication. A high grade does not necessarily depend upon the successful completion of the thesis proposal, but comes from a thorough intellectual involvement in the thesis. The undergraduate thesis in mathematics will be worth six credit hours.
Students are responsible for contacting one or more potential supervisors to act as a thesis supervisor. It is anticipated that students should contact potential thesis supervisors before the end of the term in which they expect to complete 90 credit hours. Contact with potential supervisors must be made by the add/drop date of that academic term. The thesis supervisor will normally come from the department of mathematics and statistics and the choice is subject to the approval of the chair of mathematics and statistics. After discussions with various faculty members, an arrangement with one faculty member to serve as a thesis supervisor should be made. The student, thesis supervisor, and the chair of the mathematics department must sign a form which names the student, proposed thesis topic, and thesis supervisor. It may be feasible, or even desirable for some topics, for students to begin preliminary reading and planning through the summer months if the thesis topic can be adequately defined by this time.
The thesis supervisor is responsible for the direction and instruction of the student, and will ensure that adequate time is spent with the student to allow for the successful completion of the thesis. However, as in all other courses, the student is ultimately responsible for the completion of course requirements. The thesis supervisor is responsible for evaluating the: a) thesis proposal; b) thesis; and c) student presentation. Additionally, a thesis examiner will be required for all undergraduate theses. The student and the thesis supervisor will share joint responsibility for selecting the thesis examiner. The thesis examiner will normally be a UNBC faculty member, and will probably come from the mathematics and statistics department or from a science department or program. Occasionally it may be best to have a member of the community as a thesis examiner (e.g., a statistician or applied mathematician employed by the public or private sector). If the thesis examiner is not a member of the UNBC faculty, then they are required to have a minimum of a Master's degree in the same or a closely related field as the thesis. The thesis examiner will be primarily responsible for reading and grading the final draft of the thesis. Half of the final grade for the thesis and half of the grade for the thesis presentation will be provided by the thesis examiner. The thesis examiner may also aid in the grading of the thesis proposal, but this is not required. If any problems arise between the student, thesis supervisor, or thesis examiner the chair of the department of mathematics and statistics (or the Dean of CSAM if the thesis supervisor is a chair) will act as a mediator, ensuring that any differences are settled to allow the student to complete the thesis requirements.
As noted above, the thesis supervisor is responsible for evaluating the thesis proposal and the implementation of the research, the thesis, and the student presentation. However, the thesis examiner will provide 40% of the final grade. The grading criterion will be the following: a) 20% of the total grade will derive from the thesis proposal and the implementation of the research (evaluated by the thesis supervisor); b) 70% of the total grade will derive from the thesis (50% of which is evaluated by the thesis supervisor, and 50% by the thesis examiner) c) 10% of the total grade will derive from the student’s presentation of his or her thesis (50% from the thesis supervisor and 50% from the thesis examiner). Before credit is awarded for the thesis course, the student must make all changes to the thesis required by the thesis supervisor or the thesis examiner.
All final arrangements should be mutually agreed upon by the student, thesis supervisor and the thesis examiner. This agreement should be signed by the student, thesis supervisor, thesis examiner, and chair. This form must be signed as soon as possible, but at least by the end of the first term that the student started the thesis (normally the fall term of the fourth year). A basic time line for the completion of the thesis should also be included in this agreement (see Appendix I for a proposed copy of this form).
Format and timelines for thesis
The specific formatting of the undergraduate thesis, which includes citation style, font style, and size, margins, title page, table and figures style, etc., is found in the Mathematics and Statistics Undergraduate Thesis Formatting Guide. The course Undergraduate Thesis will normally begin, either in the fall or winter term immediately following the term in which the student completes 90 credit hours, or in the summer term following the term in which the student completes 90 credit hours if that term be the winter term, and be completed within twelve calendar months of the beginning of the term in which the thesis work commenced. Alternate arrangements as to starting and completion dates may be possible with the support of the Chair (or Dean if the thesis supervisor is the Chair).
