Scholars in the doctoral program in Organizational Behavior at Harvard Business School are prepared to pursue an interdisciplinary inquiry into issues that are broadly related to the functioning of individuals within groups, at either the micro or macro level. The Organizational Behavior program is jointly administered by the faculty of Harvard Business School and the Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and students have the opportunity to work with faculty from both the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School.

Curriculum & Coursework

Our program offers two distinct tracks, with research focused either on the micro or macro level. Students who choose to focus on micro organizational behavior take a psychological approach to the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and groups, and the effects that groups have on individuals. In macro organizational behavior, scholars use sociological methods to examine the organizations, groups, and markets themselves, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives.

Your core disciplinary training will take place in either the psychology or sociology departments, depending on the track that you choose. You will also conduct advanced coursework in organizational behavior at HBS, and complete two MBA elective curriculum courses. Students are required to teach for one full academic term in order to gain valuable teaching experience, and to work as an apprentice to a faculty member to develop research skills. Upon completion of coursework, students prepare and present a dossier that includes a qualifying paper, at least two other research papers, and a statement outlining a plan for their dissertation. Before beginning work on the dissertation, students must pass the Organizational Behavior Exam, which presents an opportunity to synthesize academic coursework and prepare for an in-depth research project.

The PhD program requires three years of full-time graduate study, at least two years of which must be at Stanford. Typically, however, students take four to five years after entering the program to complete all PhD requirements. The University requires a minimum of 135 units for a PhD, up to 45 units of which may be transferred from another graduate program, or used toward a master's degree at Stanford.

Oral examination

Doctoral students are required to take a number of courses, both to pass a qualifying exam in one of these areas, and to complete a dissertation based on research which must make an original contribution to knowledge. The PhD is generally organized around the expectation that the student acquires a certain breadth across all areas of the department, and depth in one area.

The current areas are: Computational Social Science Decision and Risk Analysis Operations Research Organizations, Technology and Entrepreneurship Policy and Strategy Quantitative Finance

Each student admitted to the PhD program must satisfy a breadth requirement.

All first year students are required to attend and participate in MS&E 302 Fundamental Concepts in Management Science and Engineering, which will meet in the Autumn Quarter.

Each course session will be devoted to a specific MS&E PhD research area. At a given session, several advanced PhD students in that area will make carefully prepared presentations designed for first-year doctoral students regardless of area. The presentations will be devoted to: (a) illuminating how people in the area being explored that day think about and approach problems, and (b) illustrating what can and cannot be done when addressing problems by deploying the knowledge, perspectives, and skills acquired by those who specialize in the area in question.

Faculty in the focal area of the week will comment on the student presentations. The rest of the session will be devoted to questions posed and comments made by the first-year PhD students.

During the last two weeks of the quarter groups of first year students will make presentations on how they would approach a problem drawing on two or more of the perspectives to which they have been exposed earlier in the class.

Attendance is mandatory and performance will be assessed on the basis of the quality of the students’ presentations and class participation.

Each student admitted to the PhD program must pass an area qualification procedure. The purpose of the qualification procedure is to assess the student’s command of the field and to evaluate his or her potential to complete a high-quality dissertation in a timely manner. The student must complete specified course work in one of the areas of the department. The qualification decision is based on the student’s coursework and grade point average (GPA), on the one or two preliminary papers prepared by the student with close guidance from two faculty members, at least one of whom must be an MS&E faculty member, the student’s performance in an area examination or defense of the written paper(s), and an overall assessment by the faculty of the student's ability to conduct high-quality PhD research. Considering this evidence, the department faculty will vote on advancing the student to candidacy in the department at large.

The qualification procedure is based on depth in an area of the student’s choice and preparation for dissertation research. The qualification process must be completed by the end of the month of May in the student’s second year of graduate study in the department. The performance of all doctoral students will be reviewed every year at a department faculty meeting at the end of May or beginning of June. PhD qualification decisions will be made at that time and individual feedback will be provided.

The PhD qualification requirements comprise the following elements:

Courses and GPA: Students must complete the depth requirements of one of the areas of the MS&E department. All courses used to satisfy depth requirements must be taken for a letter grade, if the letter-graded option is available. Course substitutions may be approved by the doctoral program advisor or the MS&E dissertation advisor on the candidacy form or on a request for graduate course substitution form. A student must maintain a GPA of at least 3.4 in the set of all courses taken by the student within the department. The GPA will be computed on the basis of the nominal number of units for which each course is offered.

Paper(s): A student may choose between two options. The first option involves one paper supervised by a primary faculty advisor and a second faculty reader. This paper should be written in two quarters. The second option involves two shorter sequential tutorials, with two different faculty advisors. Each tutorial should be completed in one quarter. In both options, the student chooses the faculty advisor(s)/reader with the faculty members’ consent. There must be two faculty members, at least one of whom must be an MS&E faculty member, supervising and evaluating this requirement for advancement to candidacy. The paper/tutorials must be completed before the Spring Quarter of a student’s second year of graduate study in the department if the student’s qualifying exam is during the Spring Quarter, and before the end of May of that year otherwise.

Area qualification: In addition, during the second year, a student must pass an examination in one of the areas of the MS&E department, or defense of the written paper(s). The student chooses the area/program in which to take the examination. This area examination will be written, oral, or both at the discretion of the area faculty administering the exam. Most areas offer the qualifying exam only once per year, which may be early in the second year.

Each doctoral student’s progress is reviewed annually by the MS&E faculty. Typically, this occurs at a faculty meeting at the end of Spring Quarter, and appropriate email notifications are sent over the summer to the students and their advisors. It shall be the responsibility of the student to initiate each required step in completing the PhD program. To maintain good standing in the PhD program,

First year students must: 1. Complete 30 units, including MS&E 302 and doctoral courses taught by faculty in their research area; 2. Develop relationships with faculty members who can potentially serve as dissertation advisor or reading committee member. A faculty member is more likely to accept the responsibility of supervising the research of a student whom he or she knows fairly well than a student whose abilities, initiative, and originality the faculty member knows less. It is recommended that students participate in research rotations with MS&E and related faculty to facilitate the development of these relationships.

Second year students must: 1. Complete at least two one-quarter research rotations or tutorials, or one two-quarter research rotation, tutorial, or research paper, continuing to develop relationships with faculty members who might serve as dissertation advisor or reading committee member; 2. Pass an area qualifying exam or defense of the written paper(s); 3. Submit a candidacy form signed by at least one MS&E faculty member with whom they have or will complete research rotations, tutorials, or papers, and listing the course requirements agreed upon by both the student and the program advisor; 4. Complete 30 units, including most, if not all, of the required courses listed on the candidacy form; 5. Be advanced to candidacy by the faculty.

Third year students must: 1. Submit a progress form listing the dissertation topic and signed by the dissertation advisor (if the dissertation advisor is not an MS&E faculty member, the form must also be signed by an MS&E faculty member who agrees to be on the student's reading committee, as well as the student's point of contact within the department); 2. Complete 30 units, including any remaining depth courses.

Fourth year students must: 1. Select a reading committee (a dissertation advisor and two readers) with at least one member from the student's major department, and submit the reading committee form signed by each member on the reading committee; 2. Make satisfactory progress on their dissertation as determined by their dissertation advisor; 3. If the student has not transferred any previous graduate units to Stanford, complete 30 dissertation units.

Students beyond their fourth year must make satisfactory progress on their dissertation as determined by their dissertation advisor and approved by the faculty. Indeed, the dissertation advisor will have to present the case to (and seek approval for good standing of the student from) the faculty in the annual faculty meeting for student review. It should be noted that each student inherently has to pass the oral examination (see below) and submit their dissertation before their candidacy expires.

Oral Examination

As administered in this department, the University oral examination is a defense of the dissertation; however, the candidate should be prepared to answer any question raised by any members of the Academic Council who choose to be present. The examining committee consists of the three members of the reading committee as well as a fourth faculty member and an orals chair. The chair must be an Academic Council member and may not be affiliated with either the Department of Management Science and Engineering nor any department in which the student's adviser has a regular appointment; emeriti professors are eligible to serve as an orals chair. It is the responsibility of the student's adviser to find an appropriate orals chair. The University oral examination may be scheduled after the dissertation reading committee has given tentative approval to the dissertation.

The student must be enrolled in the quarter of their oral examination. Students should schedule three hours for the oral examination, which usually consists of a 45-minute public presentation, followed by closed-session questioning of the examinee by the committee, and committee deliberation. The student needs to reserve a room, and meet with the student services manager to complete the oral examination schedule and pick up other paper work. This paperwork, along with an abstract, needs to be delivered to the orals chair at least one week prior to the oral examination.

The Ph.D. in Management Science and Analytics program prepares graduates to identify pressing issues facing the business community, structure problems and gather data, and create innovative, impactful analysis and solutions.

Emphasizing both analysis and synthesis, the program delivers a comprehensive, advanced education in how to apply quantitative methods, analytical tools, and computer models to complex decision-making in business, finance, and other disciplines.

Through specializations in quantitative finance and analytics and rigorous dissertation work, students master a data-intensive approach to management science and research methodologies that can be applied to any aspect of business.

This program is selective and small, offering a high degree of mentorship and interaction between faculty and students, with ample opportunities to conduct cutting-edge research alongside faculty experts.

After completing all the required Ph.D. coursework and the Ph.D. qualifying and comprehensive exams, students often gain practical experience through internships, which creates new opportunities to analyze data and case studies that are potentially useful for pursuing a doctoral dissertation. Students are also encouraged to serve in teaching and research assistant positions to gain valuable teaching or practical research experience.

STEM-Designated Program

This is a STEM-designated program, and international graduates of the program are eligible to apply for an extension for Optional Practical Training, which allows selected students to stay and work in the United States for up to three years after graduation.

Scholarships

The Stuart Doctoral Scholarship is available for select students pursuing a Ph.D. in Management Science and Analytics. Scholarship values vary; in academic year 2023–24 the maximum award is $25,500 ($425 per credit hour, with a maximum of 60 credit hours of coverage) and the Doctoral Scholarship may only be applied toward Stuart tuition charges. Flexibility to Pursue a Master’s or Doctorate

Students’ career objectives can change while they are in graduate school and the Stuart School of Business programs in management science and analytics provide flexibility for students:

  • Students who initially enrolled in the M.S. program in Management Science and Analytics may subsequently apply to the Ph.D. in Management Science and Analytics program. If admitted, students can apply the core courses in management science that they have already completed toward their Ph.D. program.
  • A Ph.D. in Management Science and Analytics student who has completed 33 graduate credits in the program may choose to graduate with an M.S. in Management Science and Analytics degree, instead of completing the Ph.D. in Management Science and Analytics degree.

Operations Management

Effective solutions for complex business problems..

The operations of a firm involve acquiring productive resources and the configuration of a productive system, then utilizing them to produce goods and services. The decisions at every level are complex. Operations Management helps to deliver solutions for even the most challenging business decision.

Making tough business decisions demands both realistic modeling of these decision problems and knowledge of the development of new theory and techniques. Our program stresses a balanced approach to the subject while familiarizing you with the latest methodologies. Students are expected to understand the real context within which operational decisions are made, and to develop skills in modeling these problems. The emphasis is on the study of complex, large- scale systems needing integrated solutions.

Program outline: operations management, the first year.

The first year is designed to provide you with solid training in mathematical programming and probabilistic modeling. You’ll also build your analytic and research skills while exploring basic issues faced by operations mangers. Students are expected to achieve an A- or better in five required courses, and achieve a B+ in all other courses; this serves as the Preliminary Requirement. Students will begin pursuing research during the summer of their first year, choosing two research questions by the end of the spring term. By August 31, students should deliver initial drafts of the papers addressing these questions. The initial drafts will be evaluated and successful completion of the initial drafts requirement will constitute passing the First-Year Paper.

The Second Year

The second year is novel for doctoral programs in operations management. Students work on two individual research topics in conjunction with the faculty. These papers provide the bridge from class work to research. These papers are due by May 31 of the second year, successful completion of this paper constitutes passing the Second Year Papers in Operations Management. In addition, students will gain depth in the Operations Management courses and seminars. Students are also required to write a Qualifying Exam paper, due by November 30 of the third year. This paper is usually a more in-depth version of one of the papers used for the second-year papers.

The Third Year and Beyond

Students continue to take PhD seminars in OMG and should complete all the minor requirements. The students must work with faculty advisors to determine additional courses that might be beneficial to their training.

PhD Operations Management Courses

The course provides an introduction to stochastic processes. Topics include the Poisson process, renewal theory, Markov chains, semi-Markov and Markov renewal processes, and regenerative processes.

This course will study advanced topics in stochastic processes, with emphasis on problem modeling and computation. The following topics will be covered: models using discrete time Markov chains, optimal stopping and discrete time Markov chains, models using continuous time Markov chains, Markov decision processes for discrete time Markov chains, and if time permits, diffusion processes/martingales.

This course introduces students to research areas in Computers and Information Systems (CIS) and Operations Management (OM). Multiple lectures will be dedicated to each topic, covering the necessary mathematical background, primary analysis techniques, and important, seminal, or recent papers within each area. The course aims to attain the following objectives: learn about what constitutes research in CIS and OM, develop critical thinking about academic papers, familiarize students with new research areas, provide opportunity to think about new research problems, and practice constructing and delivering academic talks.

This course introduces unconstrained and constrained optimization in finite dimensional spaces. Topics include convex sets and functions, Kuhn-Tucker theory, Lagrangian duality, parametric continuity, dynamic programming, and parametric monotonicity.

Announcements, deadline extended to 29 january 2024, for doctoral programme admissions, ph.d. experiences, my two years journey at iim ahmedabad has been very rewarding. professors, here, are very knowledgeable and supportive. there are abundant research opportunities with hundreds of research seminars occurring every year. campus has excellent infrastructure including classes, sports facilities, hostels and the library is probably the best in india with plethora of resources. ph.d. office, library and administration staff is also very friendly and cooperative. apart from academics, there are plenty of avenues to explore cultural and sports interests..

Does it help to have an MBA degree before entering the Ph.D. program?

Not really. From the first year itself the student takes Ph.D. level courses alongwith some PGP courses as recommended by his/her Academic Adviser. Hence, a student coming from non-management background is equally placed with those having a management background. Please check the area pages in the Ph.D. Prgramme in Management Brochure for specific requirements. For example, P&QM area encourages students who have a quantitative training from various disciplines to apply for their programme. Similarly, students with a background in Psychology may find the work done in the Organizational Behaviour useful.

How do I apply? What is the process of admission to the programme? Where can I get the forms? Can I apply online?

Application form can be filled-in online. Application fee of Rs. 500/- can be paid through IIMA payment gateway. Candidates have to attach copies of academic certificates/testimonials and qualifying examination score card along with the application. The qualifying exams are: Scores on standardized tests ( CAT / GATE / UGC JRF / GMAT / GRE / ICAR-SRF)

What are the important deadlines?

What is the purpose of the interview? What is expected at the interview for IIMA? Does it help if I come prepared with a research proposal?

The purpose of the interview is to gauge the academic preparation of the candidate for her/his chosen high level of specialized area in the programme. It also gives the candidate an opportunity to find out if the programme meets the requirements of the student. The student is not expected to have prepared any research proposal. In addition to interview, some of the Areas may conduct written test.

Does the programme accept international students?

Yes, the programme accepts international students. The eligibility requirements are the same as for domestic students. Please write to us specifically for details on the admission process and fees.

How selective is IIMA? What are my chances of getting admitted? How many students are admitted each year?

The selection process is very rigorous and involves four levels of screening and interviews. The number of seats are not fixed for the programme and depend upon the calibre of the applicant who goes through a fair and rigorous selection process.

Do you have an option of doing high level of specialized inter-disciplinary research?

Yes. You could specify this at the time of application. However, you will be housed in one area of specialization. You could take courses on highly specialized areas of study from a variety of areas and choose your thesis topic that cuts across disciplines.

Is the courses work at IIMA very difficult?

The institute expects high levels of specialized academic rigour and integrity. It has stringent requirements at specified stages of the programme, and there are fair and open processes to check that each student passes these at every stage of the programme. The candidates who are unable to meet these requirements are asked to leave the programme without any prejudice. The process of natural justice is followed in each such case.

What are the important stages in the Ph.D. program?

How much flexibility exists in the Ph.D. program? Can I change my area of research during my stay at IIMA?

IIMA Ph.D. programme offers a mix of flexibility and rigidity to the students. Students are allowed to change their chosen area of specialized work during the first year at IIMA, if they fulfil specified criteria. Specific deadlines for doing so are provided in the Ph.D. Programme Manual. IIMA offers high degree of flexibility in choosing areas of research. However a student is required to complete his/her area comprehensive exam by beginning of third year and thesis proposal defense within 9 months of the completion of area comprehensive examination. How do I choose my research topic?

A research topic requires interest and motivation of student and availability of a suitable guide interested in the area of high level of specialization. Each Ph.D. student forms a Thesis Advisory Committee with whom the student has to work towards her/his thesis.

Are Ph.D. students required to teach?

IIMA offers full support for attending up to 4 domestic conferences during the course of the programme. Competitive Travel Grants are available for attending international conferences as per the prevailing policy.

7. Create WBS

Work breakdown structure is the process in which project deliverables and all the required project work is further subdivided into chunks and pieces. It helps in better management of the work as well as its on-time completion. WBS successfully gives forward a framework that needs to be followed throughout the entire project.

Once you have developed project scope statement, it becomes easier to create WBS. The main activities and approaches for creation of WBS are the following:

Decomposition

It is the best approach for the creation of WBS. As the name suggests, decomposition means breaking the tasks into smaller and more manageable tasks. The level of decomposition is often in accordance with the degree of project control that helps in effective management of the project.

  • Work Package: It provides a structure for hierarchical gathering up of costs, schedule and resource information.

  • WBS dictionary: It is a document that contains all the scheduling information regarding each step of WBS. The information mainly includes work description, assumptions and constraints, cost estimates , quality requirements and everything that contributes to acceptable delivering of the project scope baseline.

9. Verify Project Deliverable And Come Up With Accepted Deliverables

Once you have developed project scope baseline, you can check if your project deliverables are in accordance to the scope of the project and if all the tasks are getting completed properly. If there are any desired changes, those can be done right at this step.

Take into account all the deliverables that are completed and checked if they are correct. Make sure they all meet the acceptance criteria that is set up according to the project scope baseline. What Is Project Scope Management? An Overview

Project Scope Management is a defined process for completing a temporary project. It is an essential element for the function of any team, ensuring maximum efficiency, eliminating unnecessary or redundant work, and keeping a team on the same page every step of the way. Project scope will also help manage the client’s expectations and keep the project on time and on budget.

What is project management?

Project Scope Management refers to a set of processes that must be completed in order to deliver a “project,” which could be a product, service or result with specific features or functions. Scope Management focuses on “how we get there” or perhaps more accurately “what steps do we take to get there?” These steps are defined and mapped so that project managers and supervisors can determine the amount of work needed and where to focus efforts of the team in order to complete the project.

Project Scope Management should not be confused with Product Scope Management , which focuses more on the functional requirements of the product/service/result. This type of scope defines what the product is, what it will look like, and how it will function, whether it is the product as a whole or a component of the product.

Project Scope Management includes three processes:

  • Planning – The project is defined and the work (or processes) needed to deliver the project is determined.
  • Controlling – This involves tracking, managing and monitoring the progress of a project, including tracking documentation, scope creep, tracking the work during each phase, and disapproving/approving any changes along the way.
  • Closing – This is the “wrap up” part of the process, which involves an audit of the project deliverables and accessing the results of the final product against the original defined plan.

Determine your project scope statement

The scope statement is where you will identify the work that needs to be done in order to complete the project. It defines your objectives and directs the processes for completing the project. You may also see the scope statement referred to as “the statement of work” or “term of reference.”

Having a clear scope statement will ensure that everyone knows what to expect, that each required step is taken, and that the project is successfully completed on time and on budget.

The scope statement should include a list of everything needed to create the framework for the project including: project goals, deliverables, features, functions, tasks, deadlines, and costs.

The project manager, working together with the team leaders and stakeholders, should develop the scope statement, ensuring the following:

  • It includes only the work (scope) required;
  • Each step of the project can be completed on time, and
  • That the project can be completed within the allotted budget.

The scope statement should include:

  • The boundaries of the project (what is and what is not included)
  • The responsibilities of each team and the individual team members
  • The procedures for completing each step of the project
  • How each step will be verified and approved

Why the project scope statement is essential

You wouldn’t go on a long road trip without a map. The project scope statement is like a map used to get from start to finish. Without this statement, team members cannot be clear on what they are supposed to do and when. You are also more likely to miss deadlines, make mistakes and run over budget.

The scope statement also becomes part of your essential documentation, proving that all parties were informed and signed off on the project before any work began. You need such a statement to protect your interests in the event of disputes with the client, contractors, sub-contractors or workers.

Project management steps

Project scope management requires a number of steps to ensure the correct processes are put in place. In general, there are 6 steps, which can be applied to nearly any industry or type of project, whether it’s a new product, computer network system, computer software/hardware, engineering project, construction project, or a new department within an organization.

1. Plan Scope Management

This first step involves planning the process and creating a scope management plan. The goal of this step is to determine how the scope will be defined, managed, verified and controlled.

There are 4 primary parts of the scope management plan:

  • Requirements
  • Scope Statement
  • Work Breakdown Schedule
  • WBS (work breakdown structure) Dictionary

2. Collect Requirements

This second step will establish what needs to be accomplished during the project. You will need to collect the requirements of all the stakeholders, which may include the client, senior management, investors, government regulators, neighbors or nearby landowners. You will determine the project timeline, allocation of resources, and set the goals of the project.

There are 5 categories of project requirements:

  • Business requirements
  • Stakeholder requirements
  • Product requirements
  • Transition requirements
  • Quality requirements

3. Define Scope

This step involves determining the scope of the work that will be involved in order to deliver the project. It should outline the steps that will be taken in order to meet the project’s goals and objectives.

Define the project scope by identifying:

  • Project objectives

In this phase you will also establish the parameters of the project. In other words, you must define exactly what is included in the project and what is not. This ensures that the client, stakeholders, senior management, project manager, and team members are all aware of what is expected.

4. Create WBS

The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) involves subdividing the project deliverables into smaller units. Basically, you break down the project into phases, including the tasks required in order to complete each phase.

If you were building a house, the WBS phases might include:

  • Design – Creating plans/blueprints and making changes to the plans
  • Structural – Excavation, pouring foundation, framing, drywalling and roof joists
  • Utilities – Plumbing, electrical and HVAC
  • Finishing – Painting, windows, roofing, siding and landscaping

5. Validate Scope

This step has to do with formalizing the acceptance of deliverables. This phase is not concerned with the deliverables themselves, but how they will be accepted and approved . The point of this phase is to avoid stakeholders deciding that things should have been done differently after the project has been completed.

Validate Scope should include:

  • Whether the project deliverables are accepted?
  • Who accepts project deliverables?
  • Under what conditions deliverables will be accepted?

6. Control Scope

This refers to the process of monitoring progress and managing changes that come up during the project. It monitors “scope creep,” which happens when additional tasks are added/changed, without making the necessary changes to the scope in terms of schedule, costs and resources. This is an essential part of the process as changes can result in lost time, cost overruns, and will require the reallocation of assets and manpower.

● Wednesday, May 8, 2024, 5:30 p.m. in HUB 332/Zoom – GPSS 2024-2025 Officer Elections

● Wednesday, May 8, 2024 – Digital ballots will be made available online by the GPSS Elections Committee. All candidates must attend the Officer Elections meeting in person or via online conference mechanisms. Candidates will be given 3 minutes to speak and may present up to one PowerPoint slide detailing their positions and experience. If presenting a slide, it must be submitted to the Elections Committee ( [email protected] ) by email no later than 2:30 p.m. on May 6, 2024. After all the candidates for a given position have presented, there will be a 10-minute period for Senators to ask questions of those candidates.

The election results will be announced after the voting window has closed and after the Elections Committee and the two independent witnesses have analyzed the results (within seven (7) days of the Officer Elections Meeting). Any preliminary results will be announced at the end of the Officer Elections Meeting should any preliminary results be final.

● Saturday, May 11, 2024 – Last day to file challenges to the election. Challenges to the election must occur within 72 hours of the election meeting. All challenges must be submitted to the Elections Committee in a written form (preferably via email to [email protected] ).
