Over the course of the novel’s three years, Scout , Dill , and Jem grow up both physically and mentally. They begin the novel with a firm and uncomplicated idea of what’s good and what’s bad, but by the end of the novel, they’ve all lost their innocence and have come to a more complex understanding of how people and the world work. In particular, having Scout, whom the reader meets at age six, narrate the story allows the novel to show clearly how children lose their innocence as they grow—while also using Scout’s innocence to look freshly at Maycomb and her world to criticize its flaws.

Though Scout is a precocious child in a variety of ways, the novel also goes to great lengths to comically demonstrate how innocent and unaware Scout is of the world around her. For example, she believes Jem’s unfounded claim that the teaching method Miss Caroline promotes is called the Dewey Decimal System—in reality, a system of organizing a library—and referring to her and Jem’s snowman as an “Absolute Morphodite” in such a way that betrays that she has no idea what “morphodite” actually means (a hermaphrodite, a plant or animal with both male and female sex organs). The children also firmly believe, for the first year of the novel, that Boo Radley is a zombie-like figure who eats small mammals or, possibly, is dead and stuffed up the chimney of the Radley house. While undeniably humorous to the reader, who’s likely aware that these notions are ridiculous and incorrect, the beliefs themselves function as a window into just how youthful and innocent Scout, Jem, and Dill truly are.

The children’s innocence, as represented by these instances of misunderstandings or far-fetched superstitions, isn’t always entirely humorous, however. Particularly once Scout begins attending school, the novel suggests that even though children may be prone to this kind of nonsense and far-fetched storytelling, they’re still innately able to recognize the ridiculousness of the adult world around them, and in particular, the ineffectiveness of the school system. Scout’s precocity and intelligence means that when she enters the first grade, she already knows how to read and write, both printing and cursive—something that her teacher, Miss Caroline, finds threatening and offensive for seemingly no real reason, and even punishes Scout for. In this sense, Scout begins to see that the adult world is just as nonsensical as the reader can see that Scout’s childhood world is—though the adult world is one that forces growing children to conform and fall into line, rather than one that relies on imagination and individuality. With this, Scout is encouraged by Atticus to understand that while she may one day have to enter the world of adults and grow up, the path to get there is one on which she’ll have to fight constantly for her individuality. As the novel wears on and Scout witnesses terrible cruelty and injustice, it also suggests that she’ll also have to fight hard to maintain her sense of compassion, right, and wrong.

Mr. Gilmer ’s interrogation of Tom Robinson is a wakeup call for the children, and their reaction to Robinson’s the trial suggests that although children can be naïve, they are often more perceptive and compassionate than the supposedly mature adults around them. Dill, in particular, is angered and overcome by the rude and racist way that Mr. Gilmer speaks to Robinson. Outside the courthouse, Mr. Raymond , a man whom Scout previously thought was an evil drunk, suggests that Dill only has the reaction he does because he’s a child—as children grow, he suggests, they lose their capacity to cry over injustices like Robinson experiences, as they learn to conform to adult rules of polite society that forbid reactions like that (and for white people like Scout and Dill, also discourages that kind of compassion directed toward black people in the first place). Mr. Raymond is, notably, an outsider in Maycomb, as he’s white and yet lives with his black girlfriend because he wants to, a choice that’s unthinkable to even someone like Scout. It’s because of his outsider status that he’s able to make these observations and confirm for Dill that what’s happening to Robinson is awful—though it’s still possible, he suggests, that Dill will one day “fall into line” and conform to the hatred around him. Later, Atticus echoes Mr. Raymond when he tells an angry and tearful Jem that juries have been wrongfully convicting black men for years, will continue to do so, and that only children cry when it happens—another indicator that children, who are more unencumbered by social codes and pressure to fit in, are innately able to pick up on injustices like this. The hope, the novel suggests, is that they’ll be able to maintain this ability to look at the world in this way once they enter the adult world and face pressures to conform and bury their sense of right and wrong.

Tom Robinson’s trial represents the end of an era of blissful innocence for both Scout and Jem. Jem in particular struggles to understand how such a thing could’ve happened, a thought process that Atticus suggests simply reflects where Jem is in his development—at 13, Jem understands better than Scout how the case unfolded, which makes it more difficult in many ways for him to deal with. While the novel doesn’t resolve Jem’s angst and inability to wrap his head around what happened, it does offer hope that both he and Scout will be able to maintain their moral compasses, as well as their compassion, into adulthood. Scout’s major coming-of-age moment happens as she stands on the Radley porch and, as Atticus has instructed her to do at several points, "climb[s] into [Boo Radley's] skin.” She’s able to understand, through this, that Boo may be very different from her in a variety of ways, but he’s still a compassionate, self-sacrificial neighbor who’s worthy of respect and kindness. This leap in understanding suggests that as Scout continues to grow and develop past the novel’s close, she will be able to maintain her belief in what’s morally right, even as she loses her innocence and moves toward adulthood.

To Kill a Mockingbird seems like a very simple, well-written morality tale at first glance. But if you take a closer look, you'll find a much more complex story. The novel explores the themes of prejudice, justice, and innocence.

The story of To Kill a Mockingbird takes place over the course of several years, beginning when Scout is 6 years old and ending when she is close to 9 years old, and her brother Jem is 9 (though very close to being 10) in the beginning and is 13 or 14 by the end of the story. Lee uses the young age of the children to tease out many of the complexities in her themes; Scout and Jem are frequently confused about the motivations and reasoning of the adults around them, especially in the earlier sections of the novel.

Initially, Scout, Jem, and their friend Dill make many incorrect assumptions about the world around them. They assume that Boo Radley is some sort of monster and ascribe near-supernatural powers to him. They assume that aunt Alexandra does not like them or their father. They assume that Mrs. Dubose is a mean old woman who hates children. And Scout in particular assumes that the world is a fair and honorable place.

Over the course of the story, the children grow up and learn more about the world, and many of these initial assumptions are revealed to be incorrect. Lee explores the way that growing up and maturing into adults makes the world clearer while also less magical and more difficult. Scout’s rage against Mrs. Dubose or her teachers at school is simple and easy to comprehend, as is her terror of Boo Radley. Understanding the complexities underneath the behaviors she sees makes it more difficult to hate Mrs. Dubose or fear Boo, which in turn ties into the more obvious themes of racism, intolerance, and innocence in the story. The end result is that Lee connects racism with childish fears that adults ought not to experience.

There’s little doubt that To Kill a Mockingbird is concerned with racism and its corrosive effects on our society. Lee explores this theme with an initial subtlety; Tom Robinson and the crimes he is accused of are not explicitly mentioned until Chapter 9 in the book, and Scout’s understanding that her father, Atticus, is under pressure to drop the case and that his reputation is suffering because of it is developed slowly.

Lee is not, however, solely concerned with racial prejudice. Rather, she explores the effects of prejudice of all kinds—racism, classism, and sexism. Scout and Jem slowly come to understand that all of these attitudes are incredibly harmful to society as a whole. Tom’s life is destroyed simply because he is a Black man. Bob and Mayella Ewell, however, are also looked down upon by the town for their poverty, which is assumed to be due to their low class status and not to any sort of economic cause, and Lee makes it clear that they persecute Tom in part in order to assuage their own feelings of rage at the way they are treated, that racism is inextricably linked to economics, politics, and self-image.

Sexism is explored in the novel through Scout and her constant battle to engage in behaviors she finds interesting and exciting instead of the behaviors that people like aunt Alexandra feel are more appropriate for a girl. Part of Scout’s development as a person is her journey from simple perplexity at these pressures to an understanding that society as a whole expects certain things from her solely due to her gender.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a surprisingly deft analysis of the differences between justice and morality. In the earlier parts of the novel Scout believes that morality and justice are the same thing—if you do wrong, you are punished; if you are innocent you will be fine. Tom Robinson’s trial and her observation of her father’s experiences teach her that there is often a stark difference between what is right and what is legal. Tom Robinson is innocent of the crime he is accused of, but loses his life. At the same time, Bob Ewell triumphs in the legal system but finds no justice either, and is reduced to drunkenly stalking children to compensate for being humiliated despite his victory.

Mockingbirds. The title of the book references a moment in the story where Scout recalls Atticus warning her and Jem that killing mockingbirds is a sin, and Miss Maudie confirms this, explaining that Mockingbirds do nothing but sing—they do no harm. The mockingbird represents innocence—an innocence Scout and Jem slowly lose over the course of the story.

Tim Johnson. The poor dog that Atticus shoots when it goes rabid has a name purposefully similar to Tom Robinson’s. The event is traumatic to Scout, and teaches her that innocence is no guarantee of happiness or of justice.

Boo Radley. Arthur Radley is not so much a character as a walking symbol of Scout and Jem’s growing maturity. The way the children perceive Boo Radley is a constant marker of their growing maturity.

Layered Narration. It can be easy to forget that the story is actually being told by a grown-up, adult Jenna Louise and not the 6-year-old Scout. This allows Lee to present the world in the stark black and white morality of a little girl while preserving the details whose significance would escape a child.

Revelation. Because Lee restricts the point of view to Scout and what she directly observes, many details of the story are only revealed long after their occurrence. Symbolism in the Novel, To Kill a Mockingbird

To those who have an appreciation for literature, take a moment to look at the world, and truly pay attention, I guarantee you will notice how symbolism takes place in many different aspects of our everyday lives. Symbolism plays a largely significant role in many people’s lives through what they might see, do, read, or hear throughout the day. Furthermore, this subject is significant to myself because the idea of symbolism has been a topic that has piqued my interest for many years, mostly due to the symbolism that is present in literary works. Symbolism is often present in rhetoric and the art of literature since it allows the author and writer to open the readers’ mind into thinking about an idea and what it might stand for in a more complex aspect. For this paper, I argue that there are many significant examples of symbolism in the famous novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, and how the symbolism of the title, culture, and identity is important in rhetoric due to the impact it has had on literary symbolism and storytelling. The examples of symbolism even start in the title of the novel where a mockingbird symbolizes innocence, and then carry on throughout the plot of the story, such as the multicultural differences, such as segregation and inequality, and the true ethical meaning that certain characters represent, including their identity, like Scout’s character representing a queer girl symbolized by her “tomboyishness.”

Innocence is a sacred virtue and can be symbolized beautifully in works of literature. To Kill a Mockingbird, does a great job in symbolizing innocence through the characters pathos and youth. The classic novel written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Harper Lee, is a classic novel due to the important messages it exemplifies. For example, Harper Lee was able to construe a title that would symbolize the idea and plot of what her story was going to be primarily about, which is a little girl who learns important lessons about life as she matures throughout the novel. In the reading, On the Symbolic Significance of To Kill a Mockingbird , authors Liu Xi and Zhang Li-li state, “In this story, because innocents are destroyed by evil, the “mockingbird” comes to represent the idea of innocence. Thus, ‘to kill a mockingbird’ is to destroy innocence” (Xi and Li-li, 4). The importance of this symbolic aspect of the novel is significant as the title forces the readers to truly think about how the title relates to the plot and connect it from there. Instead of just mindlessly reading, the readers need to understand the rhetorical characteristics this story portrays. Innocence shapes the title of the novel, so the idea of killing this “mockingbird,” means they are tarnishing and putting an end to a young individual’s innocence through the reality of racial inequality present at that time. In addition to this, the mockingbird also symbolizes the idea of good and evil both existing at the same time in the world. It represents the morality of individuals in society and draws a line between the characteristics of good and evil. Xi and Li-li support this point by providing an example from the story in which characters Scout and Jen portray a childlike innocence to the idea of good in the world; however, as they grow older and recognize evil in people and society, they now understand that the world is not always a positive place (Xi and Li-li, 5). Innocence is shown when the character Scout mentions how she does not know what love is, and this proves her innocence by her lack of knowledge of this simple emotion. It is extremely heartbreaking.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, race plays a predominant role in the plot of the story. The characters in the novel symbolize multicultural differences present in society, such as racism,

segregation, and inequality. For example, authors Darryl Potyk, and Cicely W. White of the article, “Another Lesson from the Mockingbird: Institutional Racism in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird” state, “Most significantly and often overlooked is the fact that the falsely accused black man is found guilty and imprisoned. As a result of the wrongs heaped upon him, Tom is full of despair and attempts to escape from prison. As he does so, he is shot 17 times in the back” (Potyk and White, 1). In this story, Tom is used to symbolize the systemic racism that is sadly present in our society. In addition to race, ethical meaning and identity of the characters are also present symbols in the novel. For example, the character Atticus plays an important role in the symbolism of the ethical meaning behind his character. For instance, in the reading, On the Symbolic Significance of To Kill a Mockingbird, by, authors Liu Xi and Zhang Li-li, they state, “In the novel, Atticus represents morality and reason” (Xi and Li-li, 279). Atticus Finch plays a major role in the novel. He is a lawyer and a single father to characters Scout and Jem. Atticus Finch represents a father who is brave and honorable, but also considerably kind and confident. This is shown through his ability to be sure of his decisions. Regarding identity, this is symbolized through the young female character Scout. For example, in the reading, Mockingbird Passing: Closeted Traditions and Sexual Curiosities in Harper Lee’s Novel , author Holly Blackford mentions how it is believed that Scout’s “Tomboyishness” symbolizes her identity, which many believe is a queer girl (Blackford, 53). Scout is one to stray away from the common gender roles of the time, and that symbolizes who she really is.

On the contrary, those who have read To Kill a Mockingbird, may believe that it is a bad influence on young adults who may read it because it presents racial slurs and tells the story from a “white perspective.” I disagree with this claim because I strongly believe there is a firm message behind this story. The message that To Kill A Mockingbird gives is to treat everyone

with the respect and dignity one deserves. This story teaches empathy and to not be so judgmental. If one is going to be judged, it must be done solely on their own actions, and not on something that they cannot control.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a great work of literature that exemplifies rhetoric through the idea of symbolism. It forces the readers to think while they read, rather than just mindlessly flip through the pages of a story with no significant meaning and understanding. Overall, To Kill a Mockingbird is a historical piece of literature that holds great importance to the English rhetoric by providing symbolic attributes to the story, all the way from the title, to the culture, identity, and ethical meaning of the characters and the plot that author Harper Lee created.

Good vs. Evil In To Kill A Mockingbird

Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that tells the story of Atticus Finch, a white lawyer in the deep south during the 1930s who defends a black man accused of rape. The novel explores the themes of racial prejudice, morality, and justice.

To Kill a Mockingbird is widely considered to be one of the greatest novels of all time. It has been translated into more than 40 languages and sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. The book was made into an Academy Award-winning film in 1962, and Harper Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007.

The story of a boy named Atticus Finch, who defends an innocent black man from unjust conviction when he is accused of raping a white woman in Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Set in 1936, the book centers on race and class prejudice after Atticus wins his case but before Watson arrives as his lawyer in exchange for defending Tom Robinson against false accusations that he committed a crime against nature.

Mr. Beale does not remember how many times he has been struck by lightning or if it was once written down; however, we do know that Atticus had asked him to write down everything about his life to protect him from any harm since there are so many bad things happening around him.’

They learn from their father, Atticus, that it is important to see people for who they are on the inside, and not to judge them based on their appearance. However, as they grow up and experience more of the world, they realize that there are bad people in society, and that the evilness of these people can have a negative impact on others. For example, the character of Bob

Ewell is an evil man who maltreats his family and eventually tries to kill Scout and Jem. The fact that he is able to get away with his crimes shows how evilness can go unpunished in society. This theme is important because it highlights how good and evil can coexist in the world, and how the actions of evil people can have a negative impact on innocent people.

Throughout the narrative, Jem and Scout grow up, learning how to not be influenced by others’ ill will. They learn from their father and through experience. As a result of this, Dill and they witness other people committing terrible deeds such as when Tom Robinson was unjustly convicted of raping Mayella Ewell because he was white.

However, they also see the goodness of people, such as when Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson to the best of his abilities even though he knows that he will probably lose. In the end, Jem and Scout learn that it is best to try and be good rather than evil. Harper Lee tries to teach this lesson through her novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

Both Jem and Tom Robinson are affected by the court case since they are unaware of the true evil of racism. Tom was unjustly imprisoned and subsequently murdered, thus resulting in a devastating loss of faith for law and humanity for Jem.

The Finch children also suffer from racist attacks. Their father, Atticus, is called names and spat at by people in town because he is defending a black man. The family receives death threats, and someone even tries to kill Jem. Despite all of this, the Finches continue to stand up for what they believe in, which is ultimately good.

Racism is an evil that plagues society. It is something that Harper Lee addresses in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Through the characters of Tom Robinson and Jem Finch, she shows how racism can destroy lives and cause innocent people to suffer. Racism is an issue that is still relevant today, and Lee’s novel serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of hate.

Because of his immaturity, Scout and Jem are held to account for their lack of knowledge, as well as the world through an adult perspective. Atticus Finch, Jem and Scout’s father, aids them in recognizing the badness in others while also acknowledging the potential for good.

Dill is the first to leave Maycomb because he finds life there unbearable, and it is Scout who remains behind at the end. After his Aunt Rachel tells him that Jem and Scout will not live much longer, Dill leaves town. Because she feels it is her duty to preserve her father’s reputation and Atticus’ name, she will stay with him.

“How to Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a novel about good and evil. The story is set in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, in the 1930s. The novel centers on the Finch family: Atticus Finch, a white lawyer; his daughter Scout; and his son Jem. The Finches are one of the few families in Maycomb who are not prejudiced against blacks.

The novel deals with the issue of racial injustice, which was prevalent in the American South at the time. Lee addresses this issue through the characters of Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson. Atticus is a white lawyer who defends Tom, a black man who has been accused of raping a white woman. Although Atticus knows that Tom is innocent, he realizes that the jury will probably find him guilty because of their prejudices.

Tom is eventually convicted and killed while trying to escape from prison. His death leaves Atticus and his family devastated, but they continue to live their lives with dignity and grace.

“How to Kill a Mockingbird” is a novel about courage, strength, and hope in the face of evil. It is a story that teaches us to stand up for what is right, even when it is not popular. It is a novel that shows us the importance of compassion and understanding.

“Mockingbirds don’t do anything but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, nest in corncribs, or do anything else but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a crime to kill a mockingbird, as Miss Maudie admonished Scout about mockingbirds. In this example, the mockingbirds are individuals who have the potential for good in their lives. They are extremely vulnerable to evil because they haven’t committed any crimes against society.”
