Research scholarship information

ANU funds and administers a range of scholarships for PhD, Professional Doctorate and Master by research programs. The University also administers a number of scholarships funded by the Australian Government and other sources external to the University. The University's aim is to attract research degree applicants who have a proven capacity for research.

Many graduate research scholarships are offered by individual ANU Colleges. You are, therefore, strongly encouraged to contact the relevant ANU College, or a prospective supervisor, before lodging an application to discuss the proposed research topic and opportunities.

Central Scholarship Rounds

ANU has two central scholarship application rounds per year. Central Scholarships include the Australian Government Research Training Program and University Research Scholarships. If you have applied for admission into a HDR program before the scholarship deadlines below and selected that you are interested in a scholarship you will automatically be considered in the next available scholarship round. There is no separate application form for the central scholarship round except for current HDR candidates who would like to be considered in a subsequent scholarship round by completing the ' Request for a current ANU student to be considered for a HDR Scholarship form '.

Eligibility

Applicants for research degree scholarships must hold a bachelor degree with at least upper second class honours although competition is such that applicants usually have to hold a first class honours degree to be competitive (and for some scholarships, this is mandatory), or a Master by coursework or a Graduate Diploma (which must be completed at a level equivalent to first or upper second-class honours) degree from a recognised University.

In special cases, applicants with other qualifications and/or research experience may be considered.

Some scholarships are open both to applicants who are Australian citizens/permanent residents or New Zealand citizens and those who are nationals of other countries, while others are open to one or other category only.

How to apply

Applications for research scholarships are completed when you apply for admission.

Research Program applications may be made at any time of year, but there are closing dates for scholarship applications and most scholarships must be taken up within a certain time-frame. Further information on the application process can be found on the ANU postgraduate research application information webpage.

Conditions of award

Conditions of award are the terms under which a scholarship is established and accepted. The conditions of award outline the duration of, and eligibility for the scholarship as well as a scholar's entitlement to leave and reimbursement.

Conditions may change from year to year. A scholar is bound by the conditions that they sign and accept in the year that they commence their scholarship.

Notification & acceptance

Research scholarship offers are emailed to successful applicants.

For students who have not yet commenced, an email will be sent to the email address you supplied when applying for admission. For continuing students, an email will be sent to your ANU student email account.

Scholarship offers normally need to be accepted within two weeks of the offer being made, however, you should check the date listed on your letter of offer.

Some scholarships can be extended for six months. Please check the conditions of award specific to your scholarship to see if you are eligible to apply for an extension. Please note that extensions can only be granted based on circumstances beyond the scholar's control related to research - not matters of a personal nature.

You can apply to extend your scholarship using the  Manage My Degree eForm, via ISIS . The Chair of your supervisory panel, the Head of Department and the Delegated Authority need to endorse your request before the extension can be processed.

Scholarship (stipend) payments are made in fortnightly instalments into your nominated bank account.

To nominate which bank account you want the the payments made to, use the Bank Account and Financial Distribution Details form.

Scholarship overpayments may occur when unpaid leave requests are not received prior to the appropriate Human Resources (HR) pay period cut-off date.

If a scholarship overpayment has occurred as a result of a leave of absence request, notification will be sent in writing by the HR Division. Repayment of overpaid amounts are required in accordance with the instructions from the University. Candidates who remain in debt to the University will not be permitted to submit their theses for examination or to graduate.

Payments can also be made for travel and removal reimbursement and dependent child allowances, depending on the conditions of award.

Cessation of Payments

Scholarships payments will generally cease:

  • at the conclusion of the period outlined in the scholarship conditions of award.  A specific date will sometimes appear in offer letters; or
  • on submission of the thesis for examination; or
  • on the date on which the recipient withdraws or ceases to attend the University other than for approved absences; or
  • if a recipient is no longer meeting or has breached the conditions of award; or
  • if a recipient breaches academic or behavioural standards set by the University under the Academic Misconduct & Discipline Rules.

Conditions of award vary from scholarship to scholarship so it is essential that you check the specifics in the conditions of award that relate to your scholarship.

Changes & dates

The HR pay period cut-off date for paperwork relating to stipend payments is usually one week prior to the relevant pay day.

Paperwork relating to stipend payments must be received by the Graduate Research Office at least three working days prior to the HR pay period cut-off date to ensure that the paperwork can be processed in time.

Incomplete and incorrect forms will delay the processing of requests and may mean the paperwork is unable to be processed in time for the HR pay period cut-off.  The ANU Pay Period Cut off Calendar can be found here .

Diverse students : Right now we are home to PhD students from Bangladesh, Brazil, New Zealand, Indonesia, Iran, Sri Lanka, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, Nigeria, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, U.S.A., Canada, Northern Ireland, Russia, Italy, and Uzbekistan. We even have a few Aussies!

Our values : We work hard to provide quality supervision and we take pride in creating an atmosphere that values intellectual rigour, inclusivity, mentorship, community, social activities and enjoyment of science. Our PhD students are well supported through internal funding, including for conference travel, and our research facilities are superb. We have a thriving community of PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows, and our graduates go on to productive careers in many areas of science and beyond. Warning though – once you arrive in Australia you won't want to leave!

Location : The ANU is situated in the capital city of Canberra, which is the country’s most liveable city. We are surrounded by bushland. There are sometimes kangaroos on campus, and always possums. We are across the street from the beautiful National Botanic Gardens. Due to the many embassies in Canberra there are frequent cultural evenings, art exhibits, film festivals and music events; and the politicians ensure there are countless restaurants and bars to relax in after work.

The Australian National University: We have an international reputation for research excellence. The ANU consistently ranks in the top 50 universities in the world (e.g. 31 on QS World Rankings).

Candidates : Fully funded International PhD scholarships are highly competitive at the ANU. To be a viable candidate you need: (1) excellent undergraduate marks; (2) a Masters by Research with a high mark; or an equivalent large Honours thesis; or (rarely) equivalent proof of research experience. (3) While it is not essential, if you have published papers this is a big bonus.

What do I do? First, contact potential supervisors from the list of staff on the Research Groups above (include your CV and grades). If they are interested in supervising you (conditional on you having funding), then contact the  Graduate Program Convenor, Professor Celeste Linde ( [email protected] ), by 31 August 2023  with: a detailed CV, full academic transcripts, the name of your potential supervisor and a brief description of a research project that you and your potential supervisor have discussed. We will then compile a short-list of applicants and invite them to formally apply to the ANU. Our system is designed to avoid discrimination on the basis of which country or institute you studied at. Rich or poor, North or South. As long as it is a reputable, accredited institute you are eligible.

How it works : For now, we are assuming that your personal finances are such that you need an ANU fellowship to do a PhD*. We don't want to waste your time, or make you pay an application fee unnecessarily. We will therefore only recommend you apply for a PhD if you have a viable chance of winning an ANU scholarship. Even then it is still a very competitive process (we can make no promises). There is no separate scholarship application. You simply apply for a PhD and tick a scholarship box. Entry to the PhD program is open to applicants with a Bachelor degree and having completed (or in the process of completing) an Honours or Masters research (as opposed to coursework) degree that comprises at least a half year, full time research component and a thesis (5,000-10,000 words). Applicants with significant research experience and publications may be deemed eligible if their achievements can be justified as equivalent to completing an Honours/Masters degree.

The application form is here , along with general information on how to apply and the details about the Doctor of Philosophy program . But read on now as you need to plan ahead in case you are shortlisted. In brief, your PhD application, due by  31 August,  requires:

  • Academic transcripts & graduation/completion certificates from your Bachelor and Honours/MSc degree (in their original language and, if needed, a translation), with grading scale information.
  • A current CV, include scholarships or prizes, publications and conferences.
  • Research proposal (this is quite short and your potential supervisor can help you with it).
  • Proficient in English: For many countries a current IELTS or TOEFL certificate is required (see ANU policy). Note: You can state this is pending. If awarded a scholarship you must then pass the test.
  • Three referee reports. You need to enter your referee details on the application form. The system then automatically sends them a link to complete an online form. NB: You need to ensure your referees are willing and able to write letters and do so promptly. Plan ahead and alert them.

* If you have the possibility of PhD funding from your home country or elsewhere let a potential supervisor know.

Scholarships

The ANU College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics is committed to supporting our students with scholarships. All applications for scholarship are carefully and rigorously assessed. Our scholarship rounds are highly competitive, and we are only able to provide scholarship funding for the top applicants.

To view the full list of research scholarships offered by the ANU, please visit the Research scholarships page.

Which scholarships can I apply for?

Domestic scholarships - A domestic (or national) student is someone who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen.

International scholarships - An international student is someone who is not an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or not a New Zealand citizen. All other students, including New Zealand permanent residents, are deemed to be international students.

How do I apply?

When you submit your application for admission to a research program, you will be asked whether you wish to be considered for a scholarship. If you request to be considered for a scholarship we will consider you for all available scholarships.

What are the closing dates?

Domestic - The closing date for the main domestic scholarship round is 31 October each year.

International - The closing date for the international main round is 31 August each year.

The College holds an additional scholarship round in March/April every year. Specific closing dates and further information will be available on these pages.

Your application must be complete by the relevant closing date for your application to be considered. Incomplete applications will not be assessed for scholarship under any circumstances. There are often delays associated with collecting referee reports and other required documents, so we suggest you aim to have your application completed well in advance of this date.

When do I find out the results?

International applicants can expect to be notified towards the end of October as to whether they were successful in being awarded a scholarship. Domestic applicants should be made aware of the outcome of their application in December.

PhD opportunities

anu international phd scholarship

We welcome PhD applications from strong Australian and international candidates. The Australian PhD admission and scholarship award procedure are based on the merit of individual candidates. Being one of the world’s highest quality universities, requirements for admission to The Australian National University are naturally high and PhD scholarships extremely competitive.

Other pages on this website should give you a reasonable idea of the scope of our science and study opportunities. We rarely advertise scholarships to address a specific research question. Rather, research ideas you suggest will be considered, provided you can explain how they will be a good match with our overall research goal, interests, and experience, relating your proposal to our research and publications.

To be considered for admission or scholarship you will need to demonstrate:

  • Ability to pursue high-quality research and publications
  • Understanding of, and affinity with, water and landscape processes
  • Experience with biophysical modelling or data analysis using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Matlab, or R)
  • Ability to work both independently and with others
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good command of English

If you do not require a scholarship and are only seeking admission for PhD studies, then the eligibility requirements are the same as detailed for domestic PhD scholarships below. International students will need to pay tuition fees if they have not obtained an international scholarship.

Scholarships

Both domestic and international students can apply for an Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) stipend scholarship. This stipend has a value of around $27,000 per year over 3 years, with a possible 6-month extension. The stipend covers relocation and family and medical costs. You can find more information on AGRTP scholarships here .

These scholarships are competitive. To be eligible (and usually, successful), applicants must hold a Bachelors degree with first-class honours (i.e. graded 80-100%) or a research Masters degree from a recognised university, or equivalent background.

International students will most likely need an additional grant to cover ANU tuition fees (see below).

There are two application rounds per year: the first and main round has a submission deadline of 31 October and results available in November or early December, for a start the next academic year (February). Usually, some scholarships remain unawarded, in which case there is a second round the following May.

International PhD tuition fee waivers

In principle, international students need to pay tuition fees. These are ca. $37,000 per year and therefore exceed the value of a PhD scholarship. Hence, most international PhD students will need a further grant to cover these tuition fees.

International students can apply to Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) International Fee Offset Scholarship. This stipend directly covers tuition fees. You can find more information on AGRTP fee offset scholarships here .

These scholarships are extremely competitive. Your ranking will depend on your Bachelors and Masters coursework results, as well as your research thesis mark, and any research outputs or relevant work experience you can demonstrate. The ranking process is complicated, but to have a reasonable chance of obtaining this scholarship, you need to demonstrate a Grade Point Average (GPA) between your Bachelors and Masters overall results of at least around 93% and a similarly high mark for your research thesis.

In order to be considered for this scholarship in the main round of scholarships offers, International students need to apply for admission by 31 August latest.

Other international PhD scholarships

There are several other programs offering scholarships that cover both living costs and tuition fees. These schemes often target specific countries or groups of countries. One example is the Australian Government’s Endeavour Program ( see information here ). Other country-specific scholarships can be found here .

Citizens from the People’s Republic of China are eligible to apply for an ANU-CSC Scholarship. These scholarships are provided through a jointly funded scheme between ANU and the China Scholarship Council.  More information on ANU-CSC scholarships can be found here . While these scholarships are still very competitive, they are usually slightly easier to obtain than AGRTP fee offset scholarships.

Submission deadlines vary between schemes. If you wish to apply for a scholarship that requires a formal ANU admission offer, you will first need to complete the ANU admission process (see ‘How to apply?’ below).

Supplementary Scholarship

There may be opportunities to apply for a Supplementary Scholarship (or ‘top-up’). These will be discussed as part of your application for admission or for a base scholarship,  and depend on availability given the chosen topic and funding organisation. Rules and amounts vary between scholarship types. In some cases, students already enrolled for a PhD at ANU or at another Australian university may still be eligible for a Supplementary scholarship if a mechanism for close research collaboration exists, or can be established. In other cases, a Supplementary Scholarship may be offered conditional on the candidate transferring to the Fenner School.

How to apply?

If you want to apply for a scholarship or for admission, take the following steps:

Step 1) Carefully read the information on this page as well as this information on the ANU admission process .

Step 2) Using the information elsewhere on this website, orientate yourself on the group’s research and some suggested research topics, to see if and how they might relate to your research interests.

Step 3) Identify the most appropriate researcher in our team to supervise your research. (Note (16/7/2019): Albert van Dijk has currently reached the maximum limit of the number of PhD students for which he can act as primary supervisor, but other researchers in our team  may still be available.)

Carefully follow the instructions below (if you do not, you may get an automated response referring you back to this web page, or no response at all):

  • Start your email with “ I have carefully read the information on PhD opportunities in the ANU Centre for Water and Landscape Dynamics, and believe I meet the stated requirements. “
  • State what scheme or scholarship you wish to apply for.
  • Also in the email, give a brief calculation of the average of the GPA or grades for your (a) undergraduate degree, (b) postgraduate degree, and (c) postgraduate thesis. If helpful, briefly explain the university’s grading system. This needs to show that you meet or exceed the indicative percentage mentioned above for the targeted scheme. Note: an official assessment will be undertaken at a later stage as part of the candidate ranking process and may produce a different calculation.
  • Cover letter , briefly explaining your interest and motivation, the proposed research topic or general research area, how this fits with our group, and how you meet the general requirements (see above).
  • Curriculum Vitae , containing your personal particulars, education, work experience, any awards or publications.
  • Academic transcripts , showing the courses you have taken.
  • If not clear from your transcripts, an official statement on the overall scores or GPA results for your most recent undergraduate degree, post-graduate degree, and final thesis.
  • Any publications in English, including your Masters or Honours thesis.
  • If you are from a non-English speaking country, your  English test results. At this initial stage, it is acceptable if the test is no longer valid, however, a current and sufficiently high TOEFL or IELTS test results will have to be submitted at a later stage (Step 5) if proceeding.

Step 4) If your candidacy appears potentially competitive, our HDR administrator will assess your transcripts and assign a formal equivalent GPA. You will be informed of the outcome.

Step 5) Depending on the outcome, you will be encouraged and supported to formally submit your PhD scholarship application. In that case, you will need to ask your referees to submit their assessments through the ANU online form.

Prerequisites

Applicants should be of a high scholastic calibre and should have a capacity for research.

Applicants for research degree scholarships must hold a bachelor degree with at least upper second class Honours, although competition is such that applicants usually have to hold a first class Honours degree to be competitive (and for some scholarships, this is mandatory), or a Master by coursework or a Graduate Diploma (which must be completed at a level equivalent to first or upper second-class Honours) degree from a recognised University. In special cases, applicants with other qualifications and/or research experience may be considered.

English language requirements

You are required to meet our English Language Requirements before you can be accepted for admission. Unless your previous tertiary-level studies were undertaken in English in (for example) Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America, you will normally have to sit for either the International English Language Testing System (IELTS - overall 6.5 with no band less than 6.0) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL - 570 with TWE 4.5). Some programs may require higher scores.

If you have any questions about your application for admission and where it is up to, you can contact  ANU Admissions Office .

Research program applications are accepted at any time of the year, however there may be deadlines associated with scholarships that should be considered. For this reason, applicants are strongly recommended to apply for both admission and scholarship, before the following deadlines:

  • Overseas students: by the 31st of August to be admitted in the following year.
  • Australia and New Zealand students: by the 31st of October to be admitted in the following year.

See here for more information on how to apply:

  • Domestic applicants
  • International applicants

How long does it take?

A PhD program takes at least 2 years and at most 4 years to complete full time. All ANU scholarships end after 3.5 years without any substitute at the RSC.

What scholarships are available?

ANU offers a variety of scholarships to eligible students studying a research degree program. Scholarships are provided to assist students with the cost of their studies.

Domestic students are enrolled into research programs under the  Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) Fee Offset Scholarship . Under the AGRTP, the Australian Government pays 100% of domestic research students' tuition fees.

Scholarships differ in value and may be offered to cover some or all of the costs associated with tuition, accommodation, materials, relocation, cost of living and other expenses.

The Conditions of Award for each scholarship stipulates what the scholarship may be used for.

Two of the most sought after scholarships available are the  Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) Stipend Scholarship  for domestic research students, and the  Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) International Fee Offset Scholarship  for international research students.

Different scholarships are available depending on whether you are a domestic or international student.

Scholarships available to domestic research students

  • AGRTP Stipend Scholarship , applications close 31 October each year
  • ANU University Research Scholarship , applications close 31 October each year
  • ANU PhD Scholarships , applications can be made throughout the year

The Mathematical Sciences Institute also offers supplementary scholarships to attract talented Australian and New Zealand students of high calibre to pursue postgraduate research within the MSI. The scholarship provides for payment of a supplementary stipend to an outstanding holder of an AGRTP or similar stipend scholarship for the duration of that scholarship. The value of this scholarship is $5,000 per annum.

The maximum duration of this scholarship is three years full-time, with a possible six month extension.

Eligibility: Candidates who have completed a four year undergraduate degree or equivalent at H1 level and who wish to undertake a PhD at the School, are eligible. Domestic students include Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens.

It is not necessary to complete a separate application form as all eligible candidates will be considered.

Scholarships available to international research students

  • AGRTP International Fee Offset Scholarship  - covers tuition fees for 3 years and provides Overseas Student Health Cover
  • ANU Tuition Scholarships
  • ANU PhD scholarships

International applicants are also encouraged to explore the  Endeavour Awards  offered by the Australian Government. Closing date for applications is usually 30 June each year.

How do I apply?

You need to apply online – one application covers both admission and scholarships. You will be automatically considered for all scholarships available to you. For more information please see the Apply tab.

Do I have to pay tuition fees?

Aerial photo of cultural burning

Supporting the re-emergence of cultural burning in box-gum grassy woodlands

Preview image for the video "Supporting the re-emergence of cultural burning in box-gum grassy woodlands".

Many Australians understandably see fire only as a danger, based on collective experiences of devastating bushfires.

But if used in the right way, fire can also be a tool that benefits the landscape and reduces the impact of bushfires themselves.

“Our environment has depended on fire for thousands and thousands of years,” says Bradley Bell, a Ngunnawal Traditional Custodian who practices cultural burning.

That’s why ANU ecologists and a cohort of New South Wales Local Aboriginal Land Councils are joining together on a project to re-introduce cultural burning in box-gum grassy woodlands and to monitor the environmental outcomes of the burns.

Cultural burning is when First Nations people use fire to manage the landscape in a way that benefits the whole ecosystem, using Traditional Knowledge to care for Country.

As Senior Land Services Officer Dean Freeman explains in the above video, a calm burn ensures that small animals have time to move away from the fire, and limits the temperatures of the fire, making it easier to control.

The fire from the lower-intensity burn triggers new growth, without the destruction of a fast, extremely hot fire. Importantly, it also aims to reduce the impact of bushfires on the ecosystem.

“We really want to empower First Nations communities in restoring traditional burning practices,” says Dr Elle Bowd from the ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society, who is leading the research alongside Professor David Lindenmayer.

Their research is tracking how the environment compares before and after cultural burning takes place.

“These systems have been unburnt for hundreds of years, so it’s critically important to monitor how they respond to the reintroduction of these kinds of practices so we can inform future monitoring programs,” explains Dr Bowd.

During 2023, local Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri community members led cultural burns on their respective Countries and 40 community members were sponsored to gain firefighting and safety training with the Rural Fire Service.

Already, a team near the town of Boorowa made a discovery of 120 plants of an endangered small scurf-pea ( Cullen parvum ), previously unknown in that area, which appeared after cultural burning had taken place. It’s an exciting example of how a threatened species can respond positively to the burns.

A man stands in the bush

As well as the environmental benefits, cultural burning has multiple dimensions for First Nations practitioners: it is spiritual, cultural and social.

It’s also a way to share knowledge across generations, as Bradley Bell has done with his son, Braithan.

“I think bringing two really strong knowledges together is the best way of moving forward,” Braithan Bell says.

“We have a strong, intangible connection to our Country and we see Country from a different perspective, but how western science collects and coordinates that data is really interesting for me.”

The science backs up the work First Nations people have been doing, and will continue to do, for generations to come.

This is a joint project between ANU, NSW Local Services and Onerwal, Young and Wagga Wagga Local Aboriginal Land Councils, with management support from ANU Enterprise. The project is funded under the Disaster Risk Reduction Fund (DRRF). The DRRF is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments.

You can donate to this project at the Cultural burning in endangered grassy woodland fund .
