How to Write a Dedication for a Thesis or Dissertation?

Writing a dedication page for your thesis or dissertation is a great way to honor the people who have supported you throughout the journey of your research and writing. In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know about writing a dedication page for your thesis or dissertation. From formatting it to what you can include, we’ll run through all of the details to help you write your dedication page with confidence and gratitude.

What is a dedication page?

In academic writing (as well as book writing), the dedication page is where you can honor the people who have inspired or emotionally support you throughout your research and writing in a personal manner.

The dedication page is an optional section in a thesis or dissertation when it comes to academic writing.

Why should I include a dedication page in my writing?

The dedication page is not mandatory in most academic writing.

However, by paying tributes to the individuals or even the higher power who meant the most to you, you attach meaning to your work beyond the academic level.

A song is merely a song with lyrics, and that’s that. But if the same song is dedicated to someone, it will certainly entail special meanings to those who are dedicated and the dedicator (yourself). In other words, dedication serves to connect your work with the people who mean the most to you.

The same goes for your work. Do you agree?

Where does the dedication page appear in a paper?

The dedication page should appear before the main body of a thesis or dissertation. But every institution has its own requirements. You should always check the formatting guidelines provided by your school, faculty or department.

For this matter, we took a quick tour of the formatting guidelines for the top three universities in the US. And we’ve already found 3 variations.

How long is a dedication page?

A dedication page can be as short as one sentence, if not in a few short paragraphs.

Who should I include on the dedication page?

In academic writings, the dedication page is where you can show your gratitude to the individuals (and even the higher power) who have inspired you or emotionally support you on a personal level throughout your work.

They may or may not involve in your research work. You may include:

  • God or the higher power

What is the formatting of a dedication page?

Always check the formatting guidelines provided by your school, faculty, or department.

As a general rule, the title, as well as the text, should be aligned in the center of the page like this:

best thesis dedication quotes

What is the tone and style of a dedication page?

The tone of the dedication page can be formal or informal. It can be personal, sometimes even emotional and spiritual.

Formal phases to begin a dedication:

*Work: thesis/dissertation/report/research

This [work] is dedicated to…

Example: This project is dedicated to Mr. Smith, our teacher who helped and guided us to successfully complete this work.

I dedicate this [work] to…

Example: I dedicate this thesis to my father and my mother, who with love and effort have accompanied me in this process, without hesitating at any moment of seeing my dreams come true, which are also their dreams

I am dedicating this [work] to…

Example: I am dedicating this thesis to my late grandfather who taught me all about perseverance. His memories continue to keep me going in every single day of my life

Informal phases to begin a dedication:

Example: For my Almighty God, the reason for my existence.

Example: To Bruno, who has been my support in the difficulties.

Example: To my dearest wife Jenny, to my lovely little girl Jin, to my parents, to my brothers William, John and Paul, and to all those who made this thesis possible.

The dedication page vs the acknowledgement page, what’s the difference?

While both the dedication page and acknowledgement page let you show appreciation for the help and support in your research and writing, there are some major similarities and differences between the two.

Dedication in academic writing

On a dedication page, you honor a particular group of people or an individual for inspiring or motivating you for completing the project or paper. It can be personal, emotional, or even spiritual and does not necessarily have anything to do with the academic aspects.

You dedicate your research work to the people who mean the most to you, such as the higher power, your core family members, a particular individual, friends, or someone who has a special role in your life.

Acknowledgment in academic writing

In acknowledgments, you recognize resources (e.g. grants or funding), institutions as well as individuals that are involved or have support in the course of your research and writing. These parties directly play a role in your academic career. Here, you disclose as much academic-related information as possible.

The Similarities

These sections, usually optional, should be no longer than one page.

Depending on the requirements of school or academic department, they can appear before or after the table of contents in your paper.

The Differences

The key difference between acknowledgement and dedication is that the former is more formal and the latter is more personal.

Acknowledgement usually recognizes the contributions of those who were directly involved in the research, whereas dedications are a way for the writer to pay tribute to individuals who have had a significant personal or emotional impact on their life or work.

It is common for people to dedicate their writing to God or another higher power who they believe provided them with spiritual support during the writing process.”

Here’s a brief comparison table showing the main differences between the two:

Guidance for Writing a Dedication

Identify the recipient..

When deciding who or what to dedicate your dissertation to, it’s crucial to reflect on the individuals or entities that have profoundly impacted your academic journey. Consider those who have provided unwavering support, guidance, and inspiration throughout your pursuit of knowledge.

This could include family members whose sacrifices have enabled your education, mentors who have offered invaluable wisdom and encouragement, friends who have stood by you during challenging times, or even influential figures who have shaped your academic interests.

Additionally, it’s essential to recognize entities,, such as organizations or causes, that align with your academic goals and values. By identifying the recipient(s) thoughtfully, you ensure that your dedication carries genuine significance and reflects the essence of your academic journey.

Express Gratitude

The dedication section of your dissertation provides an opportunity to express profound gratitude to those who have contributed to your academic achievements.

Use heartfelt language to convey your appreciation for their support, encouragement, and belief in your abilities. Share specific examples or anecdotes that illustrate their influence on your academic trajectory, highlighting moments where their guidance or presence was particularly impactful.

Whether it’s the sacrifices made by your parents, the mentorship provided by a respected professor, or the enduring legacy of a departed loved one, expressing gratitude allows you to acknowledge the profound influence of these individuals or entities on your academic journey.

Furthermore, by expressing gratitude sincerely and authentically, you honor their invaluable contributions to your personal and intellectual growth, reinforcing the importance of community and support in the pursuit of scholarly endeavors.

In crafting your dedication, brevity is key to maintaining the sincerity and impact of your message. While it’s natural to want to express your gratitude elaborately, it’s important to resist the temptation to include extraneous details that may dilute the essence of your dedication.

Instead, focus on distilling your sentiments into a concise and impactful statement that captures the essence of your appreciation. By keeping your dedication short and to the point, you ensure that the message remains clear and resonates deeply with the intended recipients.

This concise approach not only respects the time and attention of your readers but also allows the sincerity of your gratitude to shine through without being overshadowed by unnecessary embellishments.

In essence, brevity enhances the effectiveness of your dedication, allowing it to leave a lasting impression on your audience.

Consider Relevance

While the dedication section of your dissertation is a personal expression of gratitude, it’s essential to ensure that it remains relevant to the overarching theme or subject matter of your academic work.

Your dedication should align with the context of your research, reflecting the connections between your academic pursuits and the individuals or entities you choose to honor.

Consider how the dedication contributes to the overall narrative of your dissertation, reinforcing themes of support, inspiration, or mentorship that may have influenced your scholarly journey.

By maintaining relevance, you underscore the symbiotic relationship between your academic endeavors and the supportive network that has facilitated your growth and development.

In doing so, your dedication serves not only as a token of appreciation but also as a reflection of the intrinsic ties between personal gratitude and academic excellence.

Personalize Your Message

Infusing your dedication with personal anecdotes, memories, or meaningful experiences can elevate the emotional resonance of your message, making it more heartfelt and impactful.

By sharing specific instances where the recipient(s) played a pivotal role in your academic journey, you not only convey your gratitude but also create a deeper connection between your dedication and the individuals or entities being honored.

Consider recounting memorable interactions, pivotal moments of encouragement, or instances where the recipient(s) provided unwavering support during challenging times.

These personal touches serve to underscore the genuine appreciation you feel towards them and highlight the profound impact of their influence on your academic growth.

Moreover, by weaving personal narratives into your dedication, you create a narrative thread that honors the past and celebrates the enduring bonds forged through shared experiences and mutual support.

Proofread Carefully

Before finalizing your dedication, it’s essential to meticulously proofread it to ensure accuracy, clarity, and appropriateness. Grammatical errors, typos, or inconsistencies can detract from the professionalism of your dissertation and undermine the sincerity of your message.

Take the time to review your dedication carefully, paying close attention to spelling, grammar, punctuation, and overall coherence. Consider seeking feedback from trusted peers, mentors, or advisors to gain fresh perspectives and identify any areas that may require refinement.

Additionally, ensure that the tone and language of your dedication align with the overall style and tone of your dissertation.

By conducting thorough proofreading, you demonstrate attention to detail and a commitment to presenting your work with the utmost professionalism and precision.

Ultimately, a carefully crafted dedication, free from errors and ambiguities, not only enhances the overall quality of your dissertation but also ensures that your message of gratitude is conveyed with clarity and sincerity.

Dedication in Dissertation: Final Remarks

In conclusion, the dedication section of your dissertation serves as a poignant tribute to those who have played a significant role in shaping your academic journey.

By following the guidance provided, you can craft a dedication that honors the individuals or entities that have provided unwavering support, guidance, and inspiration along the way.

From expressing heartfelt gratitude to ensuring conciseness and relevance, each dedication aspect contributes to its overall impact and resonance.

Personalizing your message with anecdotes and memories adds depth and sincerity and strengthens the emotional connection between you and the recipients of your dedication. Furthermore, careful proofreading ensures that your message is communicated with clarity, accuracy, and professionalism, leaving a lasting impression on your readers.

Ultimately, the dedication section is more than just a formality—it’s a meaningful opportunity to express appreciation for the invaluable contributions of others to your academic and personal growth.

Through thoughtful reflection and expression, your dedication becomes a testament to the supportive network that has accompanied you on your scholarly journey, enriching the narrative of your dissertation and reinforcing the importance of gratitude and community in academic endeavors.

Read on to discover how you can write the perfect dedication, whether it is a dedication to a friend, parent, child, or someone else.

Tips for Writing a Dedication Page

A dedication is usually a single sentence at the beginning of a book, thesis, or dissertation that offers the work to someone who inspired you or helped you with it. It's a short statement but one that can be very personal.

There's no right or wrong way to write a dedication sentence. Who you thank and how you thank them can and should be personal.

If the list of people you need to thank is long, you can use your Acknowledgments section to pay tribute to as many people as you'd like.

Everyone who reads your book, thesis, or dissertation will see your dedication page. Be aware of the impact that your dedication will have.

Be brief. Dedication sentences should be short and to the point.

I know the price of success: dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.

Jesse Owens quote: We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality...

Dedication is not what others expect of you, it is what you can give to others.

Success, like happiness, is the unexpected side effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself.

Martin Luther King, Jr. quote: If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then...

If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.

You can do anything you put your heart, mind and soul into. Far more than you can imagine. Be fearless. Do it.

Business is always a struggle. There are always obstacles and competitors. There is never an open road, except the wide road that leads to failure. So choose to be among the few today.

Great article 🙂 For me is the best quote that keeps me focused and motivated to work this one from Charlie Munger:

Dedication, acknowledgements, & preface

Dedication, Acknowledgements, and Preface sections are all optional pages. But, what is the difference between these three?

Dedication — A personal tribute to someone or a group of people. Example: "To my parents."

Acknowledgements — A professional tribute to a person or people who helped you with the thesis. Example: "I wish to thank my thesis advisor for the hours of help in the lab making sure the experiments were set up properly and guiding me through the thesis process."

Preface ( sometimes confused with Foreward or Prologue ) — A very rarely included section that details why you are qualified to write about your topic of your thesis or why you became interested in the topic (for example, an anecdote about a childhood incident that led you to become interested in the topic). Do not confuse this with the literature review; this is more of a personal story.

The video below gives more examples of what can be included in these sections. Note: If your dedication is short (like "To my parents"), you may choose not to include the "Dedication" heading at the top of the page. A demonstration of how to format the dedication page this way is shown below.

160 Dedication Quotes About Achieving Success

Last Updated: March 21, 2023 by Quote.cc Team

These dedication quotes can be just what you need to stay motivated toward hard work. Let them remind you to be successful and that you need to be dedicated.

Dedication is committing oneself to a particular task, goal, or cause. It involves putting in the time, effort, and resources necessary to achieve something, often facing challenges or obstacles.

Dedication is an important trait that can help individuals accomplish their goals, whether personal, professional, or related to a more significant cause. When someone is dedicated to a particular task or goal, they are more likely to put in the necessary work and make sacrifices to achieve it. This can lead to greater satisfaction and fulfillment when the plan is finally completed.

Dedication is essential in building solid relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. When someone is dedicated to a relationship, they are willing to invest time, effort, and energy to nurture it and make it thrive.

However, dedication can also have its downsides. It can sometimes lead to burnout or neglect of other vital aspects of life, such as health or personal relationships. It’s crucial to balance dedication and other priorities to maintain overall well-being.

Overall, dedication is a valuable trait that can help individuals achieve their goals and build strong relationships. As with any quality, it’s essential to practice it in a healthy and balanced way.

If you have big goals, keep them away from small minds.

Dedication is essential to many successful endeavors, including academic and professional pursuits, creative projects, sports, and social causes. It helps individuals stay focused on their goals and maintain the motivation to see them through to completion.

While dedication is often associated with positive outcomes, it can also have negative consequences if taken to an extreme. Over-dedication can lead to burnout, physical and emotional exhaustion, and neglect of other vital areas of life, such as personal relationships and self-care.

In summary, dedication is a valuable trait that can lead to success in various areas of life. It involves a commitment to a particular task or goal, persistent effort and focus, and overcoming obstacles. However, it is essential to maintain a balance and avoid over-dedication to prevent burnout and negative consequences.

30 Great Book Dedication Examples to Inspire Your Own

A book dedication is a note in the front matter that expresses the author's gratitude to someone who may have supported or inspired them. They're often unremarkable ("To mother") but hidden in the first pages of many books are flashes of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it brilliance.

Knowing that readers won't always see the dedication pages, authors will sometimes sneak in little secrets or jokes aimed at their friends, colleagues, or critics. Sometimes, this may be the only part of the book where the writer will let their true personality shine through. Let's look at some book dedication examples to appreciate the variety of approaches writers take.

1. EE Cummings’s “no thanks” to publishers

The dedication to EE Cummings’ 1935 poetry collection No Thanks  is, in fact, an anti-dedication:

EE Cummings dedication: No thanks to Farrar & Rinehart, Smith & Haas, Simon & Schuster, Viking Press, etc

After being rejected by 14 different publishers, Cummings eventually self-published the collection with the help of his mother — but couldn’t resist a jab in the dedication of the volume.

💡EE Cummings is far from the only writer to benefit from self-publishing. Check out these self-publishing success stories for more inspiration!

2. Derek Landy’s note to his editor

In the dedication to his fifth book in his kid’s fantasy series, Mortal Coil , author Derek Landy leaves a tongue-in-cheek note for his long standing book editor , Nick Lake:

This book is dedicated, with great reluctance, to my editor, Nick Lake, because he is forcing me to. Personally, I would have liked to include Gillie Russell and Michael Stearns who, along with Nick, really welcomed me into the publishing world with my first book. Unfortunately, because Nick is now my sole editor, he has threatened to edit this dedication down to an unrecognisable mess of blacked-out lines, and so as a result this dedication is to him, and him alone. Personally I think that this shows a staggering amount of █████ and █████, which proves that Nick is nothing but a █████ ████ ██████ with █████ for ████, but hey, that's just my personal opinion. Here, Nick. You finally get a book dedicated to you. Hope you're █████ happy. █████ (Editor's note: Nick Lake is a great guy.)

The Skulduggery Pleasant author does a great line of iconic dedications (you’ll spot more than one in this list).

3. Kiera Cass’ note to Dad

From Kiera Cass' young adult novel The Selection:

Hi, Dad! *waves*

It’s traditional to thank parents and loved ones with your dedication, and author Cass keeps the dedication to her debut   short and very, very sweet.

4. Jennifer Armintrout’s attempt to make amends

This is the tongue-in-cheeck dedication to indie author Jennifer Armintrout's Veil of Shadows:

This book is dedicated to all the family members who were angry that I dedicated the last book to someone who won the dedication in a Twitter contest.

Armintrout made a smart marketing move by using a contest to win her book’s dedication as a way to build her author platform — much to the chagrin of her family. Luckily, she made it up to them in the long run.

5. Shannon Hale’s celebrity shoutout

Many authors thank celebrities that they’ve found inspirational in the dedication of their book. Austenland author Shannon Hale takes a slightly different approach:

Shannon Hale book description: For Colin Firth, You're a really great guy, but I'm married, so I think we should just be friends.

It’s worth a shot, right?

6. Tom Crewe’s fulfillment of a promise

In the  historical fiction novel The New Life,  Tom Crewe leaves a cryptic note to a departed friend:

For John and Deborah, my parents. And for Angela Baker (1942-2013), in fulfilment of a promise.

He explains the touching story in the book’s acknowledgements: “My school English teacher, Angela Baker, saw something in me that I was too young to see for myself. When she retired (I was twelve), I gave her a letter promising that if I ever wrote a book, I would dedicate it to her. I so wish she could have seen it.”

7. Kendare Blake’s school visit

Many authors take up speaking engagements at schools to spread the word about their work — and inspire the next generation of writers. In the dedication to Mortal Gods , Kendare Blake mentions one particular school, and one particularly plucky student:

For the students of Lyons Township High School in Illinois. Because that kid in the back row asked.

The definition of “don’t ask, don’t get.”

She actually gives another shoutout in book 3 of the same series, Ungodly :

To Athena and Izzy, the two coolest teens at the Centralia Library.

If you’re a children’s or YA author, heading into schools and libraries and getting to know your young readers is one of the best things you can do to market your children’s book . Even better if you’re generous enough to dedicate a book to your new friends!

8. Derek Landy’s rivalry with his cover artist

Another entry from Derek Landy, and another dedication from the Skulduggery Pleasant series (this time The End of the World ):

This book is dedicated to cover artist extraordinaire, Tom Percival. For most people, the cover is the reason they pick up a book in the first place. The amount of correspondence I get proves this, as people go on and on about how the cover caught their eye, made them want to read about a skeleton detective, how the covers are the best things ever, how the covers blah blah blah... I think it's a generally agreed upon fact that I could draw the covers if I really wanted to. I have the raw talent, I have the eye, and I have one year of art college under my belt. And I think Tom knows this, which is why he pushes himself to excel each and every time, why he pushes himself to make these books stand out from the others on the shelf. The threat I pose is important. The threat I pose is a good motivator. Keep pushing yourself, Tom. My time is coming. P.S. You're welcome.

This time, Derek takes aim at his book cover artist Tom Percival. Sure, the covers he produced for Skulduggery were iconic — but are his hard-earned skills any match for delusion?

9. Douglas Adams’ feedback from Mom

From the introduction to Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency :

to my mother, who liked the bit about the horse.

Sometimes, your beta readers can give you invaluable feedback on your manuscript, and can cut through to the core of your story. Sometimes, they just like the bit with the horse.

10. Peter T. Leeson’s proposal

Who knew a nonfiction book could teach us so much about romance? Academic Peter T. Leeson took the opportunity to use the dedication to his tome The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates to ask one very important question:

Peter Leeson dedication: Ania, will you marry me?

Let’s hope Ania didn’t skip ahead!

11. Sean Danker’s catch-all dedication

Another short and sweet dedication, this time from Sean Danker’s Enjoying Admiral:

For everyone who only hears from me when I need something.

This is a lesson that a book dedication can be a great, low-effort way to return a favor.

12. Juan Goytislo’s powerful statement

Spanish author Juan Goytislo's dedication to the novel Makbara is a thought-provoking one:

To those who inspired it and will not read it.

There are times when an interaction or individual will leave a profound impact on us, but this feeling isn’t necessarily reciprocated, and Goytislo sums this up perfectly .

13. Charles Bukowski’s disclaimer

From Bukowski's debut novel:

This is presented as a work of fiction and dedicated to nobody.

Post Office is widely acknowledged to be a work of autofiction, and is in effect a memoir of Bukowski’s own time working as a mail carrier. But — perhaps due to its lead’s less-than-flattering portrayal — Bukowski took the opportunity in the book’s front matter to deny the story was his own, leading to this iconic dedication.

14. Ben Philippe’s reflection on what could have been

The hilarious dedication to Ben Philippe’s The Field Guide to the North American Teenager went viral:

Ben Phillippe's book dedication: To my mother, Belzie: I would have made a terrible doctor, mom. People would have died.

“If I ever wrote a book it was always going to be dedicated to my mom,” Philippe said .

Philippe explains that he wanted to write a humorous dedication to include the readers in the joke. “The rest of the blurb was honestly just something pithy because I tend to dislike first name dedications. They always feel like a private joke I’m intruding on as a reader. ‘To John’... ‘To Giselle’...I’m always left wondering if Giselle was a governess or a Parisian lover.”

15. Salman Rushdie’s cryptic acrostic

Salman Rushdie’s book of magical realist short stories, Haroun and the Sea of Stories , was written when he was in hiding. The dedication to the collection is hidden in plain sight:

Zembla, Zenda, Xanadu: All our dream-worlds may come true. Fairy lands are fearsome too. As I wander far from view. Read, and bring me home to you.

This acrostic poem spells out the name of his son, Zafar, who the book is dedicated to despite their separation. The cryptic nature of this book’s dedication also serves as a subtle prologue , introducing the theme of magic.

16. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's sweet message to a friend

From  The Little Prince :

To Leon Worth. I ask the forebearance of the children who may read this book for dedicating it to a grown-up. My first and most serious reason is that he is the best friend I have in the world. My second reason is that this grown-up understands everything, even books about children. And my third reason is that he lives in France where he is hungry and cold. He needs cheering up. If all these reasons and not enough, I will dedicated the book to the little bou from whom this grown-up grew. All grown-ups were children once — although few of them remember it. And so I correct my dedication: To Leon Worth when he was a little boy.

As the author points out, you’d expect the dedication to   one of the most iconic children’s books of all time to be made out to a child in the author’s life. Instead, de Saint-Exupéry chooses to dedicate it to an adult — but not without an apology to the kids.

17. Lemony Snicket’s dedicated dedications

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events books contain a series of heartbreaking dedications to Beatrice, a departed lover:

Lemony Snicket dedications: Several dedications to a departed lover, Beatrice

But before you reach for the tissues, don’t worry; Lemony is not just a pen name , but an entirely fictional creation of the real author, Daniel Handler — and dear Beatrice is fictional, too.

18. Nelson Demille’s star-studded role call

In his dedication to Wild Fire, thriller writer Nelson Demille takes a pot shot at other authors’ tendency to bring up celebrities in their dedications on thin pretext:

There is a new trend among authors to thank every famous people for inspiration, non-existent assistance, and/or some casual reference to the author’s work. Authors do this to pump themselves up.   So, on the off chance that this is helpful, I wish to thank the following people: the Emperor of Japan and the Queen of England for promoting literacy; William S. Cohen, former secretary of defense, for dropping me a note saying he liked my books, as did his boss, Bill Clinton; Bruce Willis, who called me one day and said, “Hey, you’re a good writer”; Albert Einstein, who inspired me to write about nuclear weapons; General George Armstrong Custer, whose brashness at the Little Bighorn taught me a lesson on judgement; Mikhail Gorbachev, whose courageous actions indirectly led to my books being translated into Russian; Don DeLillo and Joan Didion, whose books are always before and after mine on bookshelves, and whose names always appear before and after mine in almanacs and many lists of American writers—thanks for being there, guys; Julius Caesar, for showing the world that illiterate barbarians can be beaten; Paris Hilton, whose family hotel chain carries my books in their gift shops; and last but not least, Albert II, King of the Belgians, who once waved to me in Brussels as the Royal Procession moved from the Palace to the Parliament Building, screwing up traffic for half an hour, thereby forcing me to kill time by thinking of a great plot to dethrone the King of the Belgians.   There are many more people I could thank, but time, space, and modesty compel me to stop here.

Taking the namedropping cliché to the extreme, Demille’s dedication is a who’s who of famous figures, from Bruce Willis to Julius Caesar. Talk about a dream dinner party.

🤓 Can you name the literary device Nelson is using here? It’s hyperbole , the art of feigned exaggeration for comic effect.

19. Agatha Christie’s call to vicarious thrillseekers

From  The Secret Adversary :

Agatha Christie dedication: To all those who lead monotonous lives in the hope that they may experience at second hand the delights and dangers of adventure

A good dedication makes the receiver feel seen, and this dedication does a great job of calling out to its target; those of us who are seeking more from life, and turn to literature to find it.

If that sounds like Agatha’s talking to you, head over to our list of the best Agatha Christie books to choose your next read.

20. Gloria Steinem’s groundbreaking stand

In her memoir My Life on the Road , feminist author Gloria Steinem took the opportunity to thank an important figure in her life:

This book is dedicated to Dr. John Sharpe of London, who in 1957, a decade before physicians in England could legally perform an abortion for any reason other than the health of the woman, took the considerable risk of referring for an abortion a twenty-two-year-old American on her way to India. Knowing only that she had broken an engagement at home to seek an unknown fate, he said, "You must promise me two things. First, you will not tell anyone my name. Second, you will do what you want to do with your life." Dear Dr. Sharpe, I believe you, who knew the law was unjust, would not mind if I say this so long after your death: I've done the best I could with my life. This book is for you.

By making this disarmingly frank confession, Steinem makes a powerful statement about her own politics and the kindness of a stranger who allowed her to pursue the life she wanted without judgment.

21. Sean Carroll’s tribute to libraries

Sean Carroll’s dedication in The Particle at the End of the Universe :

To Mom, who took me to the library.

Libraries are different things to different people; a sanctuary to get work done, a free daycare, a convenient place to read “kittens for sale” notices. But for most people, especially young children, they’re the breeding ground for a lifelong love of words — something that’s clear from this dedication.

22. George RR Martin’s thanks for a secret ingredient

Can you imagine A Song of Ice and Fire without the dragons? In another universe, that version exists — but thankfully, not this one. In the dedication to A Storm of Swords, George R.R. Martin thanks an old friend, Phyllis, for encouraging him to take a calculated risk with his worldbuilding ; one that paid off.

For Phyllis  who made me put the dragons in

If you’re a fan of George R.R. Martin’s work, perhaps you’ll want to read his later tribute to Phyllis Eisenstein , who sadly died of COVID-19 in 2020. It’s clear she did a lot more than add the dragons.

23. Hillis Lory’s note to his daughters

In the dedication of Japan’s Military Masters, Hillis Lory takes time to thank the people who matter the most — his children:

Dedicated to two distracting little daughters, Priscilla, four years old, and Nancy, age two, who were no help in writing this book.

While toddlers may not be the most helpful in writing a nonfiction book about the role of the military in Japanese life, they probably gave it their best effort. It’s the thought that counts.

24. Rick Riordan’s non-apology to readers

When in doubt, dedicate your book to your reader:

Rick Riordan dedication: To my wonderful readers; Sorry about that last cliff-hanger. Well, no, not really. HAHAHAHA. But, seriously, I love you guys.

Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan dedicated The House of Hades , one of the books in his fantasy series , to his audience. But he couldn’t resist getting the last laugh again.

25. Fonda Lee’s dedication to fellow martial artists

Many authors draw inspiration from their real life, and Fonda Lee took a moment in the dedication for Jade War to thank the real people who inspired elements of her action-infused urban fantasy:

For the martial artists I've trained with and learned from

A classy touch, and one that lets the readers know she knows what she’s talking about!

26. Isabel Allende’s family tribute

The dedication to  The House of the Spirits:

To my mother, my grandmother, and all the other extraordinary women of this story

This novel is a sprawling family saga, so it’s only fitting that the author took a moment to pay tribute to her own family in her book’s dedication — while also honoring her fictional creations in the same breath.

27. Paolo Cognetti’s message of gratitude

In the dedication for his coming-of-age tale about boyhood friendship, The Eight Mountains , Paolo Cognetti takes a moment to recognise the real-life friendship that inspired the tale:

This story is for the friend who inspired it, guiding me where there is no path. And for the Faith and Luck that protected it from the start, with all my love.

A dedication can be a great place to find clues regarding whether a story draws on an author’s own experiences, as is clearly the case here.

28. Ruth Ozeki’s touching memorial

Telling the story of a 13-year old boy who has recently lost his father when he begins to hear voices, it’s no wonder that Ruth Ozeki chose to dedicate The Book of Form and Emptiness to her own late father:

For my dad, whose voice still guides me.

A beautiful example of a dedication that speaks to the story to come, and says a lot with very few words.

29. Terry Pratchett’s subtle jab

Revenge is best served in writing, as the dedication to  Maskerade  shows:

My thanks to the people who showed me that opera was stranger than I could imagine. I can best repay their kindness by not mentioning their names here.

Pratchett takes a moment to ironically “thank” friends who opened his eyes to a new form of art — albeit those eyes were closed immediately thereafter.

30. F Scott Fitzgerald’s four iconic words

Despite their tempestuous relationship, F Scott Fitzgerald’s dedication to his wife Zelda in The Great Gatsby is as succinct as it is evocative:

Once again to Zelda

This dedication is almost as iconic as the novel that houses it. And we hope that, after reading these examples, you'll be inspired to write your own iconic dedication — or simply pay a little more attention to the next one you come across. You never know what you might find!

Thesis acknowledgements: Samples and how to write your own thesis or dissertation acknowledgements

best thesis dedication quotes

Writing a thesis can be tricky. That’s why I’m starting a new series covering each section of the thesis, from thesis acknowledgements all the way to conclusions. I’ll be guiding you through the whole process, from what to include in your thesis to how to write it, along with examples from defended theses to help you to write your own.

We’ll begin by covering thesis acknowledgments. The acknowledgements section appears at the start of the thesis so it is often one of the first parts that everyone tries to tackle. As this will likely be your first taste of your thesis it can often feel quite intimidating to write!

Thankfully it’s also one of the easiest parts of the thesis to complete, which may help to give you a boost for the rest.

In this post we’ll cover everything to do with thesis acknowledgements: samples, what to include and how to write them. At the end I’ll also outline a 60 minute exercise which will get you preparing a first draft of your own! I’ve also got a similar post to craft your thesis title, which you can check out here .

I’m writing this post with a PhD thesis in mind but it could work just as well if you’re looking for help including acknowledgements in your Master’s or undergraduate thesis/ dissertation.

What is the purpose of the acknowledgements section in a thesis?

The acknowledgements section of your thesis is an opportunity to reflect on the people who have supported and shaped your PhD experience.

Don’t worry, although your examiners will be interested to read your acknowledgements section, you won’t really get judged on it in your PhD viva. This section is for you to share as little, or as much, as you want about everyone involved in your PhD journey.

The acknowledgements are a very personal section of your thesis and each PhD student will have different things they want to include. For example, many people wonder: How do I thank my family in a thesis? And the acknowledgements section is the answer!

Note – You can also use a thesis dedication to thank your family. This is a separate section to your thesis acknowledgements and is entirely optional. It’s usually just a single line, just like you might find at the front of some books. Most people don’t include a separate dedication section but you can if you want to go that extra step.

What to include in your thesis acknowledgements

There are usually no formal requirements dictating what to include in your acknowledgements. However, do double check for any potential rules at your specific institution.

In general the acknowledgements are the section of your thesis where you have some creative liberty and are not bound by rigid research protocols or guidelines.

Many students choose to use the acknowledgements section to thank people (or organisations) who:

  • Introduced them to the topic
  • Helped with their PhD application
  • Funded the project
  • Supervisors
  • Technicians
  • Partners, friends or family
  • Or anyone else who made an impression along the way!

But remember, you can include whatever you want! For example in my own PhD acknowledgements, which you’ll read further down this post, I thanked the university for providing a green outdoor space for us.

Acknowledge whoever and whatever influenced your own PhD experience.

You may find it helpful to start by writing a list of everyone you wish to thank.

How do you write an acknowledgements section?

Since there are no guidelines to worry about, it is really up to you how you write your own thesis acknowledgements. You have a lot of freedom for what to include and how to write it.

However you may find the following suggested phases helpful as a starting point.

Who you want to thank…

  • “First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to…”
  • “I must thank…”
  • “A special thanks to…”
  • “I would like to highlight two truly exceptional people from…”
  • “I want to thank…”
  • “In addition, I would like to mention”
  • “I would also like to extend my thanks to…”
  • “I want to give my deepest appreciation to…”
  • “Finally, but the most importantly, I would like to thank…”

…then, why you want to thank them

It can be nice to also include why you’re thanking these people, using phrases such as:

  • “…for the opportunity to be a part of this project”
  • “…for always being there when I needed his support, reviewing my progress constantly, and guiding me through my PhD studies”
  • “….for being a great bunch of people in and out of the lab”
  • …”for all the guidance, support and outstanding feedback”
  • “… who took their time to help teach me…”
  • “…for her unlimited support and unconditional guidance during my PhD journey”
  • “…were always there for discussions about anything that I was unsure on”
  • “…whom has offered invaluable advice that will benefit me throughout my life”
  • “…for supporting me since my undergraduate, and for the valuable discussions we had along the road”
  • “…for making the past 4 years much more enjoyable and keeping me sane throughout the whole process”

Here is a whole example from an accepted PhD thesis:

Firstly, I want to thank [supervisor’s name(s)] for giving me the opportunity to work on this project, providing valuable guidance and feedback, and challenging me to grow as a scientist.  Excerpt from Dr Wane’s thesis acknowledgements, available via this page or use this direct download link .

Some people will choose to use full names and titles for any professional acknowledgements and first names for any personal ones. Again, this is up to you.

To help illustrate the variety of thesis acknowledgement formats, we’ll shortly be coming on to some examples of acknowledgment sections from successfully defended theses.

Before then I want to cover some of the main questions relating to how to write your own thesis acknowledgements section:

How long should you spend writing your thesis acknowledgements?

My suggestion is to spend only an hour or two making a first draft. I suggest doing this well ahead of your final deadline so that you have time to come back to it. Even so, I’d certainly look to spend far less than one day’s work on it in total.

It is a “nice to have” and means a lot to a lot of people, but remember you’re really only writing this section for yourself. I probably spent about two hours writing mine in total, simply because it wasn’t a priority for me.

What order should you write your acknowledgements in?

A typical way to write your acknowledgements is to go from the most formal/academic relationships to the least.

It is normal to start with any funding bodies, then formal people like your PhD supervisors, then move through labmates, friends and family. But again, there are generally no rules!

How long should the acknowledgements section be?

You can include as much or as little as you want. My own PhD acknowledgements section was just under a page long and it consisted of 386 words or 1892 characters (without spaces).

Here is how it was formatted:

A screenshot of the acknowledgements section from my PhD thesis

But let’s not just look at my thesis. Using Imperial’s publicly accessible database I went through 25 published PhD theses for you.

The average (mean) length of these 25 theses was 365 words and 1793 characters without spaces. Writing an acknowledgements section of length 350-450 words was the most common:

Histogram of thesis acknowledgements length. Most theses were between 350-450 words long

The shortest acknowledgements sections was 122 words(653 characters) long. The longest one consisted of 1022 words and 5082 characters. Hopefully this illustrates that you’re not really bound by any limits. Write as much or as little as you want for this section.

My own PhD thesis is available here *, the acknowledgements section is on page 5. Here is the complete version of my acknowledgements section:

I would like to acknowledge both EPSRC and the Class of 1964 Scholarship for their financial support. It has been an honour to be the inaugural recipient of the Class of 1964 Scholarship and I am indebted to the donors in providing me complete academic freedom in this research. An immense thank you to my PhD supervisors: Jonathan Jeffers, Ulrich Hansen and Julian Jones. Support and guidance throughout the project from you all has been invaluable. JJ in particular you’ve been a fantastic primary supervisor. Thank you to all the academics who helped me get to this stage. The late Dr Kajal Mallick and his Biomedical Materials course at the University of Warwick was a huge influence and without which I would have never followed this path. My “pre-doc” supervisors in Dr Helen Lee of University of Cambridge and in particular the remarkable Prof Judith Hall OBE of Cardiff University from whom I learned so much. Thanks to Alison Paul and Michael Lim for being so supportive when I was considering applying for PhDs. It has been an amazing experience working between two research groups across different departments, thanks to everyone from the Biomechanics and JRJ groups I’ve worked with and from whom I’ve learned so much. Thank you of course to the Hybrids team I’ve worked so closely on this project with: Fra, Gloria, Agathe, Maria, Silvia, it’s been great fun working with you all! Gloria in particular thanks for you all your help, support and friendship: your inclusivity is appreciated by many. Saman, I’ve been so pleased to have you working on DVC with me and being able to discuss ideas with you really has been invaluable. I am grateful to everyone I’ve collaborated with externally: Farah, Amin and Brett (Natural History Museum) plus Andy and Behzad (Royal Veterinary College), thank you all for your support and input. Thanks also to everyone I’ve met through the Environmental Society at Imperial in particular Chelcie: your friendship and support have added a lot to my life. Thanks to Imperial for providing space for the ESoc garden, taking a break and enjoy nature in this space has certainly improved my work. Thanks of course to my family for their support. Finally, thank you Jo for always being so supportive and helping me every step of the way. My PhD thesis, available here . Acknowledgements are on page 5.

*For me the thesis was a means to an end. I wanted my PhD and didn’t want to spend too long agonising over each page. Therefore, it is possible there are typos in there, if you read any of it: firstly well done, I haven’t looked at it much since submitting the final copy, secondly, please don’t tell me about any typos you find!

My top tips for writing your own thesis acknowledgements

  • Don’t spend too long on them. The acknowledgements section is really not worth spending too much time on. Even worse, since they appear at the start of your thesis, it is tempting to write your acknowledgements first. This can be fine, or, it can be an opportunity for lots of unnecessary procrastination. Which I why I instead suggest that you…
  • Write your acknowledgements at the end of your first draft of the thesis. There is no need to write your thesis in the order it is presented. If you write your acknowledgements at the end you’ll be less likely to spend precious time on a section which really doesn’t warrant too much brain power.
  • Don’t stress about it. The acknowledgements are merely for yourself and for anyone close to you that you want to thank. There are far more important sections for you to be particular about!
  • Remember: You can make changes after you submit the copy for your viva. As with everything in your thesis, you can make changes after you submit the thesis for your viva. The real “final” copy is when you submit your thesis to the university for archiving. Which is even more reason to not spend too much time writing it the first time around.

Draft your own thesis or dissertation acknowledgements in 60 minutes

Hopefully you now feel inspired to start writing your own thesis acknowledgments!

For the exercise below I’d suggest setting a stop-watch on your phone and move on to the next section when the alarm goes, even if you’ve not fully finished. The aim is to have a rough draft at the end which you can polish off at a later point in time.

  • Read a few of the example thesis acknowledgements above to get a feel for the structure ( 15 mins )
  • List everyone (or everything!) you wish to thank – including any personal and professional acknowledgements in addition to funding bodies if relevant ( 10 mins )
  • Decide on a rough order in which to thank them ( 5 mins )
  • Craft some sentences using the phrases mentioned above ( 30 mins )

Congratulations you’re now well on your way to having one section of your PhD thesis completed!

I hope this post has been useful for constructing your own thesis or dissertation acknowledgements. It is the first in a series of posts aiming to help your thesis writing by delving into each section in depth. How to write a unique thesis acknowledgement (+ FAQs)

Photo of Master Academia

Crafting a thesis acknowledgement is typically one of the final steps in completing a thesis. This post aims to assist you in gaining insights and guidance by addressing common questions related to thesis acknowledgements. By doing so, it enables you to create a distinct and meaningful acknowledgment section that reflects your gratitude and appreciation.

What is a thesis acknowledgement?

Do i need a thesis acknowledgement, who should i thank in my thesis acknowledgment, how can i make my thesis acknowledgement uniquely personal, how formal should a thesis acknowledgement be, to what extent should i express personal sentiments in my thesis acknowledgement, how should i structure my thesis acknowledgement, how long should a thesis acknowledgement be, where is the thesis acknowledgement located, where can i find examples of thesis acknowledgements.

A thesis acknowledgement is a special section commonly included at the beginning of a thesis or dissertation. In this section, the author of the thesis expresses gratitude and appreciation to individuals or groups who have contributed to the successful completion of their academic work. It is a way for the author to acknowledge the support, guidance, and assistance they received during the research and writing process.

While a thesis acknowledgement is typically not a mandatory requirement, omitting it might not be seen positively. Writing a thesis almost always involves some form of assistance or support, whether from a supervisor, family, or friends.

Acknowledging these contributions is not only considerate but also showcases your gratitude and reflects well on your character. Including a thesis acknowledgement demonstrates your appreciation for the help you received throughout your academic journey, underscoring the collaborative nature of research and academic pursuits.

  • Yes, it is strongly recommended to include a thesis acknowledgement.

The thesis acknowledgement offers flexibility, but thanking your thesis supervisor/s is an absolute must—non-negotiable. It would be highly unusual to omit their appreciation.

Additionally, it’s customary to thank those who contributed data, such as interviewees or survey participants. While listing every individual may be impractical, acknowledging their assistance shows respect and gratitude. If someone went above and beyond to help you establish contacts for your case study, it’s worth mentioning.

Apart from these essentials, you have the freedom to thank anyone you desire. Common mentions include parents, partners, friends, peers, and colleagues. Some may even extend gratitude to pets or coffee! Injecting humor is acceptable, but maintaining a certain level of formality is advised, as explained in the subsequent section.

  • Acknowledging your thesis supervisor/s is a non-negotiable requirement.
  • Show appreciation to those who contributed data or support, like interviewees or survey participants.
  • Feel free to thank parents, partners, friends, and colleagues.

How to deal with a thesis supervisor with whom I had a challenging relationship in my thesis acknowledgement?

Regrettably, not everyone shares a positive relationship with their thesis supervisor. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge them in your thesis.

When doing so, maintain a concise approach while ensuring a respectful and diplomatic tone, refraining from any negative aspects or conflicts. Instead, emphasize the professional aspects of their contribution, such as supporting the development of the theoretical framework or providing valuable critical feedback that enhanced the quality of your work.

  • Acknowledge your thesis supervisor, even if your relationship was challenging.
  • Maintain a concise and respectful tone.
  • Focus on the supervisor’s professional contributions.

Once you have decided whom to thank in your thesis acknowledgement, consider going beyond generic expressions of gratitude. Making your acknowledgements more personal and specific can make them truly special. Instead of simply thanking someone for their guidance and support, include examples that highlight the unique contributions of those individuals.

For instance, if you are thanking your fellow thesis writers, you can say something like: “Long study sessions at the library with John and Sabine made thesis writing a joyful experience.” This demonstrates the specific way they contributed to your journey.

Similarly, if you had engaging conversations during walks in the park with someone, you can mention: “Our thoughtful discussions while strolling through the park were a crucial aspect of getting excited about my thesis topic.”

By providing concrete examples, your acknowledgements become more heartfelt and memorable, showing the genuine impact of each person you thank.

  • If possible, make thesis acknowledgements personal and specific.
  • Include examples of how each person contributed uniquely.
  • Highlight specific interactions or experiences that made a difference in your thesis journey.

While there are no strict rules for writing a thesis acknowledgement, it’s essential to consider its significance as one of the first things readers encounter in your thesis. Therefore, maintaining a certain level of formality is advised.

Avoid including details of personal experiences like drinking excesses with friends or lavish parties to cope with thesis stress. Such content could create a negative impression and should be avoided.

Remember that your thesis is an academic work, and the acknowledgement should not detract from its academic merit. Focus on expressing gratitude to those who contributed to your academic journey in a professional and appropriate manner.

  • Keep a level of formality, as your acknowledgement section is one of the first things readers see.

People have different boundaries in terms of how open they are, and you should do what you feel comfortable with. But don’t forget that your thesis will likely be a document open to the public. So make sure that you will be comfortable with the information out there, also 2, 5 or ten years from now.

That said, the thesis acknowledgement is there to showcase your human side and your gratitude for your loved ones. So don’t hold back when you really want to thank someone deep from your heart.

And of course make sure that the information you reveal about the people you thank, they are also comfortable with it. You should not, for instance, describe your messy breakup with a person and even worse naming the person by name. Instead, you can write something more neutral in a way that people who know you well still know what you mean. For instance, you could thank your friends for always being there for you during challenging times, which you are grateful for.

  • Remember that your thesis is public, so ensure you’ll be okay with the information long-term.
  • Thank people genuinely but avoid sharing sensitive or personal details about others.

When writing a thesis acknowledgement, there are several acceptable ways to structure it, each serving its purpose. Three commonly used approaches stand out.

The first method is the chronological structure, typically employed in longer theses like PhD dissertations. In a chronological acknowledgement, you express gratitude to those who supported you throughout your entire thesis journey . For instance, you can start by thanking your supervisor for their guidance from the very beginning, then acknowledge the organizers of the PhD summer school you attended in year two, followed by appreciation for your friends who encouraged you during the challenging writing phase in year three, and so on.

The second approach involves structuring the acknowledgement based on the nature of relationships, ranging from formal to personal. Here, you begin by expressing thanks to your formal supervisors and professors who played a significant role in shaping your research, then move on to more informal yet professional mentors. Subsequently, you extend your gratitude to friends, family, and, if applicable, your partner or spouse.

The third common method is essentially the reverse of the second one, starting with personal relationships and ending with formal ones. In this arrangement, you begin by thanking your close friends and family members for their unwavering support, then move on to acknowledge professional mentors who contributed to your academic growth, and finally conclude the acknowledgement with appreciation for your thesis supervisor.

  • Thesis acknowledgements can be structured chronologically.
  • Thesis acknowledgements can be structured from formal to personal.
  • Thesis acknowledgements can be structured from personal to formal.

The general guideline is that the length of the thesis acknowledgement can vary depending on the length of the thesis itself. However, this doesn’t imply that it must be excessively long.

For bachelor or master theses, the average length typically ranges from 100 to 250 words, equivalent to about half a page.

PhD thesis acknowledgements, on the other hand, tend to be longer, given the extended duration of PhD research. The average length for a PhD thesis acknowledgement ranges from 250 to 1000 words, or approximately half a page to 2 pages.

  • Bachelor’s theses: usually 100-250 words
  • Master’s theses: usually 100-350 words
  • PhD theses: usually 250 – 1000 words

The thesis acknowledgement is typically positioned right at the beginning of the thesis, following the title page and preceding the table of contents. This placement ensures that it remains distinct from the academic content of the thesis.

When formatting your document, it’s advisable to insert blank pages to maintain a proper layout in the printed version, especially when double-paged printing is used. To achieve this layout, page 1 is reserved for the title page, page 2 is often left empty, and page 3 contains the thesis acknowledgement. Additionally, page four is frequently left blank as well. This arrangement enhances the reading experience of the printed version and provides a more polished appearance to the document.

  • The thesis acknowledgement is typically placed at the beginning of the thesis, after the title page and before the table of contents.
  • Leaving empty pages, such as page 2 and often page 4, helps in maintaining a visually pleasing layout, when double-sided printing is used.

best thesis dedication quotes

Many universities maintain thesis repositories, providing students access to previous years’ theses. This serves a twofold purpose: firstly, it helps students gain clarity on the university’s expectations, preferred style, and required length for a thesis. Secondly, it offers a valuable opportunity to explore a diverse array of thesis acknowledgements, serving as a source of inspiration for crafting one’s own acknowledgment section.

In addition to utilizing the university’s repository, I have created five examples of PhD thesis acknowledgements that you can review for further guidance and ideas.

They remind us that dedication is the key that unlocks the door to our dreams, empowering us to keep pushing forward and never give up on our journey towards achievement.

Below are various dedication quotes with their meanings/explanations;

Dedication Quotes + Their Meanings/Explanations

“Dreams and dedication are a powerful combination.”  – William Longgood

People have different dreams, but they all have one common goal: to achieve something. Dreams help people focus on what they want and inspire them to take action. Dedication is a key factor in achieving dreams. When people are dedicated to their goals, they are more likely to succeed. This combination of dreams and dedication is powerful and can lead to success.

“The key to thriving with accomplishing any goal would be dependent on working with dedication, yet lots of people do not interpret just how important it really is!”  – Sarfraz Sohail

Achieving any goal, whether it be personal or professional, requires dedication and hard work. Yet, many people don't understand just how important it really is to put in the necessary effort. The key to thriving is to work with dedication, but also recognize that success comes with perseverance and a willingness to stay focused.

“By dedicating ourselves to peace, understanding, kindness and compassion, we do our part to heal the world.”  - Laurence Overmire

In an era where violence and hatred seem to be on the rise, it is more important than ever to dedicate ourselves to peace, understanding, kindness and compassion. These are ideals that we can all strive for, and by doing so, we can help heal the world.

“Success is about dedication. You may not be where you want to be or do what you want to do when you’re on the journey. But you’ve got to be willing to have vision and foresight that leads you to an incredible end.”  – Usher

Success is not always about having the most talent or the best luck. It's about dedicating yourself to your goals and staying the course, no matter what. Much like a marathon runner who pushes themselves past their limits day-in and day-out, you have to be willing to do the same thing in order to achieve your success. There will be setbacks, but if you keep your head down and focus on your goals, eventually you'll reach them.

“Achieving success doesn’t say as much about you as how you choose to wear it.”  – Frank Sonnenberg

Successful people are not always the ones with the best clothes. In fact, many times it is how a person chooses to wear their clothing that makes the biggest impact. When it comes to dressing for success, there are a few key principles that should be followed. The first principle is to never underestimate the power of a good outfit.

“Keep your dreams alive. Understand that achieving anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”  – Gail Devers

Keep your dreams alive. Understand that achieving anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe. With these five simple words, you can begin the journey to making your dreams a reality. Don't be afraid to set big goals for yourself and work hard to achieve them. It takes time and effort but with perseverance, anything is possible.

“There is no chance, no destiny, no fate, that can hinder or control the firm resolve of a determined soul.”  – Ella Wheeler Wilcox

No matter what the situation appears to be, there is always a chance for success if you have the determination to pursue it. This attitude is emphasized by a quote from an unknown person that says "There is no chance, no destiny, no fate that can hinder or control the firm resolve of a determined soul." This outlook on life provides the necessary mindset to overcome any obstacle. When you have this mindset, anything is possible.

“Show me your desire, your commitment, your stamina, your hard-won gifts, show me the luck you make, and I will show you your destination”  - Suzy Davies

The journey of a lifetime is one that starts with a single step. For many, this step is simply getting out of their comfort zone and doing something new. But for some, this first step leads to an adventure that lasts a lifetime. These are the types of people who make the luckiest of journeys - those who are committed to their goals and have the desire to see them through.

“Hard work always pays off, whatever you do.”  – Dustin Lynch

No matter what you do in life, hard work always pays off. It doesn't matter if you're a doctor, a teacher, or even a janitor; if you put in the effort and work your butt off, you'll be successful. This is something that many people forget, but it's actually true. If you want to be successful, work hard and don't give up.

Dedication Quotes + Their Meanings/Explanations

“You may not be the smartest, or the fastest, or the most talented. But you CAN work the hardest.”  – Kevin J. Donaldson

The most successful people in the world are the ones who work the hardest. They don't coast on their natural abilities or rely on luck. They put in the time and effort, no matter what. And that's why hard work is one of the best things you can have in your arsenal. It will help you achieve anything you set your mind to. So if you're not naturally gifted, don't be discouraged.

“Perseverance is defined as, ‘steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.’ Words that describe perseverance are: determination, dedication, keep going.”  – Catherine Pulsifer

The ability to persist through difficult times is an important trait. It can be described as steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Perseverance can be a valuable asset, especially in the face of obstacles. There are many words that describe perseverance, but determination, dedication, and keep going are often the most commonly used. Perseverance is a quality that can be learned and improved over time.

“To become a master at any skill, it takes the total effort of your: heart, mind, and soul working together in tandem.”  – Maurice Young

No one is born knowing how to play the violin or paint a perfect picture. Anyone can learn these skills if they put their heart, mind, and soul into it. That's why it takes the total effort of your three parts to become a master at anything. If you only work on one part of your skill, you'll never be able to achieve your full potential. You need to work on all three aspects of your ability in order to be successful.

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.”  – Robert F. Kennedy

It is true that success requires taking risks. However, it is also true that those who dare to fail greatly can achieve greatly. This is because failure forces people to become more creative and daring. It also makes them learn from their mistakes, which can lead to success.

“While no road is ever straight, dedication and persistence will always lead you to your dreams.”  – Arte Moreno

This is especially true if you are willing to put in the hard work and stay focused on your goals. Many people give up too soon when it comes to their dreams, but by staying positive and determined, they can eventually achieve what they desire.

“When doing a job - any job - one must feel that he owns it, and act as though he will remain in that job forever.”  - Hyman G. Rickover

For many people, getting a job is a necessary step in obtaining an income. However, too often people view their jobs as temporary stops on their road to financial security and personal fulfillment. Jobs should be viewed as opportunities to learn and grow, to develop skills and to make a real contribution to society. In order to maintain motivation and stay in a job for the long haul, it is important to feel that you own it and that you will remain in that job forever.

“The speed of your success is limited only by your dedication and what you’re willing to sacrifice.”  – Nathan W. Morris

If you want to achieve any meaningful goals, you must be willing to put in the extra work and bust your ass - no matter what anyone else might say. Success requires hard work and dedication, regardless of how fast it comes. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

“Whenever you want to achieve something, keep your eyes open, concentrate and make sure you know exactly what it is you want. No one can hit their target with their eyes closed.”  – Paulo Coelho

Success is not a destination. It's a journey. The speed of your success is limited only by your dedication and what you're willing to sacrifice. If you want to achieve your goals, you have to be willing to do the work. You have to be willing to put in the time, effort, and energy it takes to achieve success. Success doesn't come easy; it requires hard work, dedication, and determination.

“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”  – Vince Lombardi

No one ever became great without hard work and dedication. Success means putting in the extra effort, no matter what the odds are against you. It takes a lot of mental and physical stamina to be successful. Sometimes we have to risk it all in order to achieve our goals. And no one knows this better than athletes who compete at the highest levels. They know that even if they lose, they have applied their best effort to the game.

Dedication Quotes + Their Meanings/Explanations

“There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.”  - Beverly Sills

No matter what people tell you, there are no shortcuts to any place worth going. Even if you have the best of intentions, all of your hard work will be for naught if you don't take the long, arduous route. Traveling the world is all about experiencing as many different cultures and customs as possible, and it takes a lot of time and effort to do so. If you're looking for a shortcut, you'll be disappointed.

“The fruit of your own hard work is the sweetest.”  – Deepika Padukone

The fruit of your own hard work is the sweetest reward. No one knows that better than those who have worked hard their entire lives to achieve something they've always wanted. Whether it's a successful career, owning their own home, or raising a family, these individuals know that the satisfaction comes from within. Despite all the obstacles they may have faced, these people have persevered and achieved success because they know that it's worth it.

“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.”  – Jesse Owens

No one knows this better than athletes. From the time they’re young, athletes dream of being the best. They envision themselves on the podium, in the spotlight, and dominating their competition. It takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort to make these dreams come true. But that’s what makes athletes so special. They never give up on their dreams.

“Whenever you do a thing, act as if all the world were watching.”  – Thomas Jefferson

The age-old saying "Whenever you do a thing, act as if all the world were watching" is an important one to live by. It can not only help you in your everyday life but also boost your confidence when performing in front of others. By putting yourself in the mindset that everyone is watching, you are more likely to be professional and put your best foot forward.

“I know the price of success: dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.”  – Frank Lloyd Wright

The price of success often comes at a high cost. Dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen are necessary ingredients for achieving success. However, these qualities can also be very demanding and take a toll on your personal life. It is important to find a balance between these demands and your own needs so that you can continue to thrive both professionally and personally.

“If you truly can dedicate your life to one single mission, no matter the nature of the mission, then sooner or later the mission itself will pave its own way for you to keep on walking – so, close your eyes, visualize your mission and take the leap of faith.”  - Abhijit Naskar

There is something about the idea of dedicating your life to a single mission that can inspire hope and strength in even the most adverse circumstances. Whether it's being a doctor saving lives or an artist creating beautiful works of art, when we truly dedicate ourselves to something, no matter what obstacles come our way, the mission itself will eventually lead us to success.

“Anything can happen with hard work and dedication.”  – Jerry West

With hard work and dedication anything is possible. Even if you don't have a lot of money, you can still achieve your dreams if you are willing to put in the effort. There are many ways to achieve success, and everyone has to find their own path. However, if you are willing to work hard, there is no reason why you can't achieve your goals.

“Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.”  – Thomas Edison

This quote is often attributed to Thomas Edison and it's a very accurate assessment of the creative process. It's easy to be inspired by something beautiful or clever, but it takes a lot of hard work and perseverance to create something great. Anyone can be inspired by something new or interesting, but it takes real creativity and genius to come up with new ideas and make them work.

“The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion, it’s possible to achieve the American dream.”  – Tommy Hilfiger

There is no easy way to achieve success in life. Anyone who tells you otherwise is likely selling you something. The American dream – the idea that anyone can achieve anything if they work hard enough – is alive and well, but it’s not a walk in the park. It takes dedication, hard work, and a passion for what you do to reach your goals.

“The most successful people in absolutely any walk of life know that the secret to their good fortune comes only through dedication, perseverance and diligence. There is no such thing as a shortcut that excludes hard work.”  – Byron Pulsifer

Success is not a destination, it's a journey. The most successful people in absolutely any walk of life know that the secret to their good fortune comes only through dedication, perseverance and diligence. They understand that success does not come overnight and that it requires hard work and consistent effort. These individuals are steadfast in their beliefs, never giving up on their dreams or goals, no matter how difficult they may seem at times.

“Determination is nothing without dedication and hard work.”  – Eshraq Jiad

Anyone can be determined if they set their mind to it, but to really achieve something, you need both determination and dedication. Dedication means putting in the extra effort, while hard work means putting in the effort without giving up. It takes a lot of both to achieve anything in life, and that's why determination and dedication are so important.

“Success, like happiness, can not be pursued. It comes only as a result of dedication.”  – Viktor Frankl

Success is relative. For some, it may be having a successful career, while others may feel more fulfilled by simply enjoying their life. For most, however, success can only come as a result of dedication and hard work. Success cannot be pursued; it must be earned. The key to achieving success is to have a clear direction and focus, stay motivated never give up, and constantly learn and grow.

“Throughout life we have often heard that ‘perseverance pays off’. It is no secret that each generation wishes to nurture and raise the next generation in a way that is greater than themselves. And to do this, elders often teach the values of hard work, focus, dedication and perseverance.”  – James A. Dula, PhD

Although the saying is often repeated, few people truly understand what perseverance means. It takes a lot of hard work and determination to see results from any endeavor. However, this does not mean that perseverance is always easy. In fact, sometimes it can be incredibly difficult to keep going when all hope seems lost. But if you are determined enough and have a good support system, perseverance can indeed pay off in the end.

“Seems to me that there is a fine line between insanity and dedication…I call that line commitment.”  - Jeremy Aldana

It is important to have a commitment to your goals, even if it means going above and beyond what is required. If you are not committed to your goals, then you will most likely not achieve them.

“Only those who attempt the absurd can achieve the impossible.”  – Albert Einstein

Most people believe that if something is too difficult to achieve, it is not worth trying. However, those who attempt the absurd are the ones who are able to achieve the impossible. This is because they are willing to do what others think is impossible and go beyond their limits. People who attempt the absurd are also able to find new ways to approach problems and come up with innovative solutions. This is what makes them successful in life.

“When you truly dedicate yourself to your goals, there is no way not to achieve them.”  - Max Moreno

It is often said that if you want something, all you have to do is set your mind to it. This is especially true when it comes to achieving goals. If you truly dedicate yourself to your goals, there is no way not to achieve them. Dedication leads to passion, which in turn leads to the effort, and finally success. When you put in the work and are passionate about what you are doing, anything is possible.

“If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride – and never quit, you’ll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards.”  – Bear Bryant

If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride, you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high, but so are the rewards. If you never quit and persevere through hardships and setbacks, you'll be able to achieve your goals. Be persistent and stay focused on what's important, and you'll reach your full potential.

“If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride – and never quit, you’ll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards.”  – Paul Bryant

The saying goes that if you believe in yourself, you can do anything. For some, this is a motivational tool to help them push through hard times. For others, it is their mantra to live by. Regardless of how someone chooses to interpret it, the truth is that self-confidence and belief are two essential ingredients for success. If you have both of these qualities, you'll be able to face any challenge head-on and come out on top.

“With hard work and dedication, anything is possible.”  – Timothy Weah

Many people think that being born with a silver spoon in their mouth means that anything is possible for them. This couldn't be further from the truth. Anyone can achieve success if they put in the hard work and dedication it takes. This is especially true for people who may not have access to the same things as others. With hard work and a little bit of luck, anyone can achieve anything they want in life.

“Once you determine that the important results you want are an expression of your life’s purpose, you cannot help but bring drive, dedication, and determination to each day’s efforts. You will be driven to act relentlessly to meet cherished goals, all the while feeling rewarded, satisfied, and even joyful in the process.”  – Russell Grieger

For many people, finding their life's purpose is a journey. It's something that takes time and thought, and for some, it can be difficult to determine what it is they're supposed to be doing with their lives. For those who are determined to find their life's purpose, however, the process becomes much easier. They'll be driven by a sense of dedication and determination, and they won't be able to help but bring these qualities to each day's efforts.

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”  – Colin Powell

Successful people are not born with an innate ability; they have to work hard for it. They understand that there is no such thing as a guarantee in life, so they prepare for every contingency by learning from their mistakes. They also understand that failure is a part of the process of learning and growth, so they don't shy away from it.

“When you have dedication and an intensity about life, in what you do you demonstrate passion.”  – Catherine Pulsifer

The passion that accompanies dedication and intensity in life can be seen through the actions taken. Passionate people constantly strive to achieve their goals, whether it is personal or professional. They often put in long hours and are not afraid to take risks. Determination and perseverance are key qualities of passionate people, as they never give up on their dreams or goals.

“Motivation is what gets you started, but persistence is the only thing that guarantees your success.”  – Edmond Mbiaka

In order to achieve anything in life, you need motivation. You need to be inspired and excited about what you're trying to do. But in order to maintain that excitement and motivation, you need to keep pushing forward. Persistence is the only thing that guarantees your success.

“When it comes to fighting for your dreams, be a dragon. Breathe fire.”  – Richelle Goodrich

There’s something about being a dragon that always makes people feel inspired. Maybe it’s the fierce characteristics or the raw power of the creatures. Whatever the reason, there’s no denying that dragons are some of the most popular superheroes out there. And for good reason- they embody all of the qualities that make a superhero great. They have the bravery to fight for what they believe in, and the strength to never back down.

“No man needs sympathy because he has to work, because he has a burden to carry. Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”  – Theodore Roosevelt

No man needs sympathy because he has to work, because he has a burden to carry. Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing. Whether it's pulling your own weight in a family business, forging your own path in the world, or simply taking on a challenging task, there's something admirable about working hard and achieving success on your own merits.

“No horse gets anywhere until he is harnessed. No stream or gas drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined.”  – Harry Emerson Fosdick

Horses and streams, gas and power: these are all examples of things that are driven by confinement. Everything needs an outlet in order to be effective- otherwise it just drives itself into chaos. This is why tunneling, drilling, and creating channels are essential for turning Niagara into light and power. Without confinement, these natural resources would remain idle and unfulfilled.

“Who you are tomorrow begins with what you do today.”  – Tim Fargo

If you want to be successful in life, it is important to start by mastering the skills that will help you today. Successful people know how to manage their time and priorities, stay organized, and stay focused on their goals. Learn these skills today and you'll be well on your way to a prosperous tomorrow.

“There are always periodic opportunities to give up, while every single moment is an opportunity to persevere.”  – Dean Wilson

Every day, we're presented with countless opportunities to give up. We can easily fall into a pattern of pessimism and negativity, leading us to think that every moment is a bad one. But this is not the reality. Every moment is an opportunity to persevere - to find the positive in what might be difficult, and to stay focused on our goals.

“Dedication is belief transitioned into action which is transformed into change.”  – Byron Pulsifer

Dedication is one of the most important traits that successful people have. It's the belief that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything. Dedication is what transitions into action which is transformed into change. When people are dedicated to their goals, it leads to a sense of urgency and a greater desire to achieve them. This type of behavior is essential for success in any field, and it's something that can be learned.

“Talent is cheap; dedication is expensive. It will cost you your life.”  –Irving Stone

That is a fact that has been proven time and time again. People who are talented usually don't put in the hard work it takes to achieve success. They may be able to get by with less effort, but it won't last long. Dedicated people, on the other hand, are willing to put in the extra effort to achieve their goals.

“Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.”  – Dwayne Johnson

There is a common misconception that if someone is great at something, they will automatically be successful. In reality, success is often the result of consistent hard work. People who are successful in life have consistently put in the effort and are constantly learning and growing. This type of dedication leads to greatness, which is something that everyone can strive for.

“Remember how far you’ve come, and you won’t have to rely on a destiny for your future. It will come on your own.”  – Shannon A. Thompson

The future is not predetermined and there is no one destiny that we must follow. We have the ability to make our own destiny by working hard and being willing to try new things. Although it may sometimes be difficult, remember that with effort and perseverance, anything is possible.

“Use your strength, your passion and dedication to reach every single one of your goals.”  – Anonymous

When it comes to reaching your goals, don't be afraid to use all three of your strengths: your passion, dedication and strength. Whether you're trying to lose weight or earn a promotion, using all three of these things will help you reach your goals. Strength training can help you tone up and lose weight, while keeping your heart rate up during aerobic exercise can help you burn more calories and boost your metabolism.

“There is no greater success than turning your true passion into a dream, and seeing its reality come to manifestation.”  – Edmond Mbiaka

With hard work and dedication, anything is possible. Pursue what you truly love, and you will find fulfillment and happiness in the process. Dedicate yourself to your goals, and don't be afraid to take risks. The journey is the destination.

“Success is not the result of making one good choice, of taking one step. Real success requires step, after step, after step, after step. It requires choice after choice, it demands life-long education and passion and commitment and persistence and hunger and patience.”  - Jesmyn Ward

Today, one could argue that success is not the result of making one good choice, but of taking one step. Real success requires step, after step, after step, after step. It requires choice after choice, it demands life-long education. The only way to be truly successful is to continually learn and grow - a process that does not come easy or overnight.

“Dedicate yourself to what gives your life true meaning and purpose; make a positive difference in someone’s life.”  – Roy T. Bennett

There is no one definitive answer to what gives life true meaning and purpose. However, for many people, finding a way to make a positive difference in the lives of others is what truly matters. Whether it's volunteering at a local charity or mentoring a young person, there are many ways to give back and make a difference in someone else's life. If you're looking for something to dedicate your life to, consider making a positive impact in the lives of others.

“Dedicate some of your life to others. Your dedication will not be a sacrifice. It will be an exhilarating experience because it is an intense effort applied toward a meaningful end.”  – Dr. Thomas Dooley

The meaning of life is a question that has plagued people throughout history. It has been debated, analyzed and dissected by philosophers and thinkers. Some believe that life is about making money, getting married and having children. Others think that life should be spent helping others. There are a few people who dedicate their lives to helping others in an intense way. These people are called “volunteers” or “altruists.

“Being successful in a particular field, especially sales, does not happen overnight. It requires hard work, dedication and commitment.”  – Geoffrey Wright

The key to being successful is to never give up and always stay motivated. There are many things that you can do to help increase your chances of success, such as learning as much as you can, networking and staying focused on your goals. If you put in the effort, eventually you will be able to achieve your goals and be successful in sales.

“We truly believe with hard work, dedication and perseverance, we can become the best at what we do. No one wants to be mediocre.”  – Andy Biersack

The American Dream is not a myth; it's real. It's attainable for anyone willing to put in the effort. Success doesn't come overnight but with hard work and determination, anything is possible.

“Failure to seize opportunities is often a result of choosing distractions over dedication.”  – VaeEshia Ratcliff Davis

Often, when people are faced with a difficult task, they choose to focus on the distractions around them instead of dedicating themselves fully to the task at hand. This can lead to missed opportunities and ultimately decreased productivity. By avoiding distractions and focusing on what is important, people can more easily succeed in their goals.

“Self-belief and hard work will always earn you success.”  – Virat Kohli

Self-belief and hard work are the two most important factors in success. People with strong self-beliefs are more likely to succeed than those who don't have any. Hard work is also essential for success, as it leads to dedication, perseverance, and a will to succeed. It's important to have both self-belief and hard work if you want to achieve your goals in life.
