Abstract of the talk Professor Simon Peyton Jones, Microsoft Research, gives a guest lecture on writing. Seven simple suggestions: don’t wait – write, identify your key idea, tell a story, nail your contributions, put related work at the end, put your readers first, listen to your readers. Prof. Peyton Jones’ lecture contained a lot of question and answer sessions with the audience. These have been removed from this video, cutting the original 50 minute lecture down to 30 minutes.

How To Write A Great Research Paper (Professor Simon Peyton Jones)

A 30 minute lecture on how to write a great research paper

What I Learned

  • Once you have an idea, start writing right away
  • Identify what your contributions will be at the beginning of the writing process. This list can be updated as you go
  • Be engaging and grab the reader in
  • Save related works for the end
  • Use plenty of examples as evidence
  • The majority of the paper should be the details (results/analysis)
  • A reviewer should come away knowing exactly what the 1 main idea/contribution was
  • Give credit instead of tearing down other similar works and identify your weaknesses in the paper
  • Always listen carefully to criticisms
  • Have 1-2 people read each draft of your paper, being sure to have them tell you where they got lost

As a researcher, either you won’t understand something and you will feel stupid and like a worm, or you will understand something and think it’s too trivial and hence still feel like a worm; it turns out that the life of a PhD student is quite depressing.

I’m an Engineering Fellow at Epic Games . Prior to that I was a researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge (1998-2022), and a professor at Glasgow University (1990-1998). I’m a Fellow of the Royal Society , an Honorary Professor of at Glasgow, and an Honorary Distinguished Fellow of the Cambridge University Department of Computer Science and Technology .

I’m interested in the design, implementation, and application of lazy functional languages. In practical terms, that means I spend a most of my time on the design and implementation of the language Haskell . In particular, much of my work is focused around the Glasgow Haskell Compiler , and its ramifications.

I am chair of Computing at School , the group at the epicentre of the reform of the national curriculum for Computing in England. Computer science is now a foundational subject, alongside maths and natural science, that every child learns from primary school onwards .

I am married to Dorothy, a priest in the Church of England. We have six children.

I have two Google calendars:

If I’m free in both, I’m probably free!

How to Write a Great Research Paper

Writing papers and giving talks are key skills for any researcher, but they aren’t easy. In this pair of presentations, I’ll describe simple guidelines that I follow for writing papers and giving talks, which I think may be useful to you too. I don’t have all the answers—far from it—and I hope that the presentation will evolve into a discussion in which you share your own insights, rather than a lecture.

Speaker Details

Simon is a researcher at Microsoft Research, where he focuses on the design and implementation of functional programming languages. He was one of the designers of Haskell and is responsible for the widely used Glasgow Haskell compiler. More recently he has become deeply involved in the issues surrounding computer science in K-12 education. He co-founded the UK’s Computing at School working group, and serves as its chair.
