Engineering Dissertation Topics

A dissertation (or a final year project report) is a comprehensive technical report of the research work carried out. A dissertation must present some new, original concepts that lead to further research. The core area of a dissertation consists of a hypothesis (or a research question) upon which an investigation is conducted and, in most cases, inevitably leads to further research. A dissertation must be focused, concise and must address the research topics at every level. Also, along with research, a dissertation is expected to present complete evidence of research work in the form of research methods. Sometimes it’s hard to even know where to start. Herein, many engineering research areas, currently being sought after in the industry and academia, are suggested, including electronics, sensors technology, environmental engineering, supply chain engineering, computer science engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering, to help you start your research.

What is the Importance of Civil Engineering Dissertation Topics?

As with every other degree, the degree of Civil Engineering requires you to submit a dissertation so that your institute can judge your research skills and see what you have learned during your years in the degree.

The structure of a dissertation is such that, students have to work hard during the research and writing process both. It is not a simple essay that is easily written within a few hours. In fact, a dissertation can take on months and even years in the case of doctorate level degrees. Generating good PhD topics in civil engineering is not as easy.

The difficulty level is due to a number of factors, which include its structure as well.

What is the structure of a dissertation?

  • Acknowledgements
  • Introduction
  • Literature Review
  • Methodology
  • Analysis/Findings
  • Recommendations
  • References/Bibliography

As you can see, a dissertation is quite long and goes through tons of processes and research. The first and foremost is finalising your dissertation topic, which is definitely not easy either.

How to finalise a dissertation topic?

  • Read across areas of your interest
  • Pick some areas that you like
  • See what kind of research gaps exist
  • Check if you can contribute something
  • Make up around five topics at the least
  • Do not go too broad on the topics
  • Do not go too specific on the topics either
  • Ensure that there is enough room for research
  • Crosscheck if the topic has not been covered before
  • Consult a professional in finalising the topic

Again, the process is not as easy as it looks, if you do not put in any research. At undergraduate level, you are mostly left to your own and do not get the spoon-feeding that you do in high school. The same goes for graduate and doctorate programs.

Your topic has to be unique and something that has not been vastly covered before. At undergraduate level, you do not have to be entirely unique because the topic does not call for a new kind of contribution.

While choosing your topic, you should retain balance between being too broad and being too specific, so as to give yourself enough room for research. Do not just go with one topic and try your hand at least five.

If the process seems too overwhelming, a good solution is getting help from someone who is experienced, like a senior or a professional who works with dissertations.

  • Size of the paper should be A4
  • The font of the dissertation should be “Times New Roman”
  • Font size should be between 10 and 12.
  • 1.5 line spacing between each line
  • 3.5 cm margin on the left (or the side the dissertation is going to be binded from)
  • 2.5 cm margin for all other sides
  • Pagination i.e. except for the title page, every other page in the dissertation should be assigned a number (even the ones left blank).

Pro Tip: Check the document formatting again when converting to or from other file formats e.g. word à pdf or vice versa. There may be conversion glitches.
